I hate carrying things, so this is about my maximum daily carry. In the picture is:

Dosh Aero Wallet

Keyport Slide 2.0

One Plus 2 with an OtterBox case.

Olight S1 Baton

Cold Steel Micro Recon 1

Nite Ize S-Biner TagLock

I've had the Dosh Aero Wallet for about 3 or 4 years now and I love it. When it gets dirty I just scrub it with dish soap and it comes out looking brand new. I do that about every year now, so three times total. It has six card slots and a money clip, down from my old leather wallets with a giant stack of cards and other assorted junk. This forces me to keep it small.

The Keyport holds my two house keys for different doors, a car key, a 32 gb SD card, a pen and a bottle opener. Sadly I cant find someone to program my Evo's key into the side chip so that stays attached :(. Otherwise, I love the keyport. It's an outstanding piece of kit and it's been highly abused by me and held up to it all. It was expensive but it's a hell of a lot better than carrying 3 large keys, a flash drive, can opener and pen all on their own. If it ever breaks, I'll be buying another.

The S1 Baton is just stupidly bright for such a tiny flashlight, so that was a no brainer to me, as was the Recon 1. The magnetic tailcap on the Baton is incredible. I'm a bit of a car guy so I've been able to use it to light tough to see areas of my engine bay when doing work. I also loved my full sized Recon 1 from my first two deployments, so I recently snagged one to put on the keychain. It's stupidly sharp and extremely small.

Salutes General Knife.

But in all seriousness, I personally would get something with a wider blade. As cool as that is, I would recommend (seeing as you like vintage style knives) maybe a Schrade Old-timer, Buck Solo, Buck 112 Ranger.

Edit: Oh and this just occurred to me, maybe an Opinel

The Cold Steel Tuff Lite is a fantastic utility knife, right at your budget. I have the plain edge version, and I love this little knife. Very ergonomic, and beefier than it looks in the pictures.

u/king_human · 5 pointsr/knifeclub

Hi! And welcome!

I like the Gayle Bradley 2 in M4, and the BM Valet in M390, but they are both very expensive to start out with. The Shuffle II is kind of crappy - I'd definitely pass on that one. I have no experience with
the Bartender Defeder, but even the XL version looks too small, as is the Rodie. The Delica and Leek are great knives, and would likely be solid options (their ergonomics are better than their handle lengths suggest, especially the Delica). The CRKT M16 is ok, but it's not great (in my opinion). I've never handled CRKT's Endorser, but it looks like a solid choice.

My best suggestion is a RAT 1 in D2. It's 40 bucks and you get a very well-made knife in D2 (semi stain resistant and will hold an edge for a good long time). The AUS-8 version is good, too, but if you're cutting boxes, the D2 option will stay sharp way longer.

As for some other options, here are some good ones from CRKT:

Foresight - It's big and comfy in-hand, but it's expensive for the materials used (aluminum and AUS-8)

Shenanigan - lighter and cheaper than the Foresight, but with the same blade material (AUS-8)

Outrage - aluminum handle and 8Cr13MoV steel (similar to AUS-8, id est, reasonably stainless, decent toughness, ok-ish edge retention), ball bearing pivot (nice and smooth!)

Ripple - aluminum handle, 8Cr13MoV blade, ball bearing pivot

With these suggestions, it may seem like I'm a shill for CRKT, but I'm not. I'm just a fan of Ken Onion's designs and ergonomics. I also like:

Spyderco Endura - very good stainless steel in a lightweight package, with plenty of handle real estate

Byrd Cara Cara 2 - Spyderco's value brand (basically a cheap Endura with 8Cr13MoV steel instead of the excellent blade steel VG-10)

Spyderco Resilience - big and comfy (G-10 scales with 8Cr13Mov steel), and my daily carry at work

Spyderco Manix 2 - light and medium sized (they also make an XL version), with BD-1 (kinda similar to AUS-8, kinda)

Cold Steel Recon 1 Spear Point - a big knife with lots of grippy G-10 handle space. The CTS XHP steel is the bee's knees, and the Recon 1 is an excellent value, but it may be too expensive as a starting point.

Also, I'm sure some other folks will chime in, too. The guys & gals of /r/knifeclub are pretty knowledgeable and helpful.

Again, my number 1 suggestion is the RAT 1 in D2. It'll be hard to beat interms of construction, ergonomics, and utility.

Happy hunting!

u/geraldm8 · 5 pointsr/knifeclub

The CRKT Hootenanny has very good action for $40~.

For $80~, the Kizer Vanguard series has a variety of very nice flippers.

u/nitpickr · 5 pointsr/BuyItForLife
u/ARKnife · 5 pointsr/knives

I'd say start low and slowly but gradually improve.

Like in other cases - I'd recommend getting the Ontario RAT 1 or the CRKT Outrage if you'd like a flipper on bearings.

Interesting choice of "for scale" BTW :)

u/korgothwashere · 5 pointsr/EDC

Seconding that you should upgrade the knife.

There are a lot of good options, although I would recommend you shy away from the Gerber brand as they have some quality control issues, and have been running quite a few recalls (Including on that utility knife you're carrying). I was hoping to have a link for you to an article comparing their number of recalls versus several other companies but can't seem to find it currently. A quick googling though will show you what I mean.

For a list of nice knife options for less than $100 (and most around the $50 mark) check out some of these:

Spyderco Endura

Cold Steel Recon 1

Cold Steel American Lawman

Cold Steel Voyager

Kershaw Blur

Benchmade Griptilian

Ontario RAT 1 Folder

CRKT Heiho

I think these on top of the list /u/OC4815162342 provided should give you oodles of options!

Also if you want to upgrade that wallet of yours here are some options to look at.

> justify paying 1800 dollars

You're really looking in the wrong place if you're paying that much for an EDC knife from benchmade. Hell I just bought my mate this great blade from them and it was no were near any of the prices you quoted. Of course they do sell more expensive knives but with that price increase often comes better quality steel, different mechanisms or it may just be a one of knife put out by them. They also offer a killer warranty on their stuff.

There are plenty of knives that head into that kind of price range but once you reach that point its not so much just about buying a practical knife but more about being an enusiastic collector of this kind of stuff.

If you want to stick with Spyderco, I'd recommend the Native 5. Similar excellent ergonomics as the Dragonfly, but slightly larger and with a better steel.

Here. Be aware this knife is not good for anything but cutting people or water bottles. It is not a "daily use" knife by any means.

Hey, if he's a big sailing guy, try the Spyderco Tusk! It's a dedicated sailing knife. What you could do is take it to a third-party laser operator and get whatever you want on it.

I had to dig through some stuff. But this whole post put this in my head.
May I present, the Spyderco Civilian. The knife that loses its warranty if you use it for any other reason but self defense.

u/ajore22 · 3 pointsr/knives

The term I think you're looking for is "lockback".

The Byrd knives are a great value, but I think the overall quality is lacking.

Now, my personal recommendation: it's a little bit smaller than you said you wanted, and a bit over your price, but absolutely worth every penny. The Spyderco Dragonfly SS, I own the FRN version and I love it. I've forgotten it's in my pocket several times and I grab another knife before I leave the house. I have had no trouble taking on tasks that probably need a bigger blade. I know steel isn't a major concern to you, but the steel it has is pretty good at holding a good edge. Definitely one of the better small folders on the market in my opinion.

Edit: found the Amazon link $42, just a hair over your price.

u/EatinPussynKickinAss · 3 pointsr/EDC

List of gear:

u/ProtagonistZero · 3 pointsr/knives

I'm a fan of the Spyderco Cat.

The grip is very high up on the blade, so it's comfortable to use. Deep pocket clip makes it easy to carry in an office environment where you may not want to broadcast you're carrying a knife. ~$45 so right under your budget. ~2.4" blade.

u/dillion203 · 2 pointsr/knives

Check out the buck vantage large, or you should be able to find the pro version in that price range with s30v steel. [link](Buck Knives 0347 Vantage Pro Folding Knife https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I0MAH6W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_6fiBybEFT5AP8) 3.25 length, so a little short.

u/RafTheKillJoy · 2 pointsr/knives

Compared to your pic the Buck 110 may be too big for you (3 3/4in blade). you might want to check out the smaller Buck 112(3in blade). http://www.amazon.com/Buck-112BRS-Ranger-Hunting-3/dp/B000EHWWJG

u/TOUCHER_OF_SHEEP · 2 pointsr/EDC

Alright, sounds good. A very basic recommendation would be a Spyderco Endura, which is a great knife in VG-10 stainless steel. In this steel you should occasionally oil your blade, but that's really it. If that looks too big, the Spyderco Delica is the same knife, essentially, but smaller. Another good Spyderco would be the Spyderco Stretch, also in VG-10. All three of these have strong back locks.

For a slightly more expensive knife, the Spyderco Manix 2 comes in 154CM stainless steel and a hard-use ball bearing lock.

The Benchmade Griptilian comes in 154CM stainless steel and has the second strongest lock on the market on it- the axis lock. There's also a version with a thumb hole instead of a thumb stud.

The Buck TM Vantage Pro comes in S30V stainless steel- one of the better steels available up until the $150 mark- but only costs about $60, and is by far the cheapest knife of its size available in S30V.

The Kershaw Blur in S30V is an amazing assisted knife in good steel. The Kershaw Junk Yard Dog is a great folder in a composite of a couple of good steels.

The Zero Tolerance 0700 is kind of funny looking but a solid knife in S30V.

So far, all of these are within your price range. Now, I'll move up just a bit and double it- you're now looking at a $200 range.

The Manix 2 XL in S30V is one of the strongest folders out there. It's definitely a hard-use knife and will survive a hell of a lot.

The Benchmade 275 Adamas is probably the strongest folder in existence. It's in D2 tool steel and has an incredibly robust axis lock that was beefed up to take more damage.

The Spyderco Caly 3.5 in ZDP-189 steel is an incredible knife in fantastic blade steel. I wish they made more things in it, I really do.

The Spyderco Techno is a bit smaller but will certainty last nonetheless.

The Spyderco Sage in S30V will do it for ya, that's for sure.

I'd love me some Benchmade Emissary in S30V.

The ZT 0350 is a folding tank.

All of these knives will last for whatever you want to do with them. Some are too heavy to reasonably EDC, like the BM Adamas and the ZT 0350, but others, like the BM Griptilian, are perfect EDC knives.

If you have questions on any of the knives I've linked or about their care and maintenance, feel free to ask.

u/davkslim · 2 pointsr/knives

I just saw this here for slightly over $60 once you factor in shipping but I personally have one of them and I can say that it's got a really strong firing/opening mechanism and solid lockup. It's a little heavy but it's also a really beefy knife and the G-10 on this knife is excellent. If you don't mind spending more (~$120), I highly recommend the Spyderco Caly 3 in laminated ZDP-189 steel.

Hope this helps!

u/Craig · 2 pointsr/knifeclub

I sort of lost control and got the Caly3 (it is amazing), but if I had managed to stay with a sane budget, it would have been the dragonfly for sure.

Edit: having read through all of your comments, it looks like you really prefer the ambitious. You should get it. Don't let the liner lock or the steel dissuade you; they will both get the job done. An edc pocket knife is a personal choice - you should get the one you want. When I don't carry the Caly3, I typically have a SanRenMu that has the same steel as the Ambitious, and it is great.

It's a Dragonfly. My brother thought the same thing. Maybe Amazon lied? Spyderco Dragonfly Stainless Steel Plain Edge Knife https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001EIAFXY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_KfsCxbQJYH0JN. Either way I friggen love Spyderco now.

u/lloganwebb · 2 pointsr/knifeclub

Maybe a Spyderco Native? I wanna say these come in S35VN which is a pretty good steel.

I'd also consider the Mini Grip although that shipping time is atrocious. These come in 154CM.

A little beefier than a Delica and above your budget but I gotta recommend the HK Axis. I've heard that people don't like the mini's quite as much as the full size model but I take it you like the smaller side of things.

Just kinda poked around for some stuff I like on Amazon.ca. Good luck finding something!

u/supertroll105 · 2 pointsr/EDC

That larger knife looks pretty rusty. As far as a knife with marlinspike I would recommend a spyderco tusk, it's expensive though

http://www.amazon.com/SPYDERCO-Plain-Knife-Titanium-Right/dp/B00ILC6YJU

For something less expensive I would go with the spyderco salt I (3 inch blade) or if you want something larger go with the Pacific salt (3.8 inch blade). Or if you want a hawk bill go with the tasman salt. They also make a sheepsfoot blade -Atlantic salt. The blades are made of H1 steel, which will never rust.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/s/ref=is_box_sporting-goods?k=spyderco+salt

u/ItIsOnlyRain · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

That is fair and that isn't the worst Gerber knife there is. The problems though are:

The biggest concern I would have is the reports of failure lock and other robustness.

The general quality is okish....

It is quite big and heavy considering it isn't very robust.

The Bead blasted finish is prone to rusting (especially with that steel).

The steel (7CR17Mo) is mediocre in a lot of aspects.

The serrations are personal and if you just tear things rather than requiring a clean cut they can be better (just more difficult to resharpen).

For the same price range you have the dozier which is brilliant, the Cold steel tuff litehttps://www.amazon.com/2010012-Cold-Steel-Serrated-20Lts/dp/B006YBW6VA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1492545767&sr=8-3&keywords=cold+steel+tuff+lite) which is really robust and the Kershaw which has amazing reviews over thousands of buyers and a lifetime warranty

u/codylee97 · 2 pointsr/Bushcraft

I have a standard kabar 1211 they're on sale right now for around $50 on amazon I love it, I've used and abused it and it is still perfect I can shave with it. Also It comes with a leather sheath, the kydex sheath is optional http://www.amazon.com/Ka-Bar-2-1211-6-Blk-Fighting/dp/B001H53Q62

u/HoshiKaze · 2 pointsr/knifeclub

If you think you're proficient enough with the wet stones, you probably dont have to upgrade.

As for knife suggestions, Cold Steel Hold Out III might be over your budget, but it is the cheapest knife I've seen that features CTS-XHP. If you ever get that, I would really like to hear your review on it.

Other than that, that price range is mostly dominated by budget Kershaws. Spydercos in that price range that I see being decent are: Pingo, Dragonfly 2 and the Cat.

u/DemonSanctuary · 2 pointsr/knives

I use the Micro Recon 1 Spear Point from Cold Steel. I like it for that.
http://www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-Micro-Tactical-Folder/dp/B006YBW82C

There is also a tanto style if you rather. I am not a big tanto fan, but for box cutting it works.
http://www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-Micro-Tactical-Folder/dp/B006YBW8BI

They are folding knives, with triad lock!, 2" blade, and 1.1oz. You will do good with those I think for just that purpose, maybe opening packages or something.

I'd try one. Fits in coin pocket of a pair of jeans, and stays sharp for a long time with only that role being used. Plus, its AUS 8a, which is easy to sharpen anyway.

u/Griffin72 · 2 pointsr/knifeclub

I can't believe it hasn't been mentioned. but the ZT 561 is hands down my favorite folding blade.

u/CitizenJp3g · 2 pointsr/EDC

The leek is a wonderful knife, but I would hesitate to use it for medium/heavy tasks. The tip is so excellently thin and sharp it could double as an emergency field scalpel. And I like to keep it that way. The package/mail/trimming a loose thread/digging out a splinter (perfect) stuff is all I'd use it for. If more hard use is expected, I'd look elsewhere...

Spyderco is hard to beat in the edc value equation. Just over your budget but the endura or delica are awesome to carry.

Currently $62.85

u/niky45 · 1 pointr/knives

not exactly "gentleman's", but any spyderco with a stainless steel handle is quite classy. for camping, I would probably go with the delica or endura, but for EDC I would prefer the tiny size of the dragonfly (I like smaller knives, btw).

only downside is a steel handle is heavy... and the G10 or FRN ones look much more tacticool. (however, I really dig the FRN scales of my byrd robin - but I was never looking for an actually classy knife in the first place)

also, for a real gentleman's knife, take a look at buck. their classic folders (110 and the like) are like the definition of a gentleman's knife.

u/ClaytonRayG · 1 pointr/knives

Buck 110FG, it's a good knife that I never had issues with. Keeps an edge and works well for skinning game. I had the 110 without the finger grooves.

u/Dr_Stephen_Colbert · 1 pointr/knives

Spyderco has a wide range of folders under $100. There's the Delica, Endura, Dragonfly, Centofante 3, and Stretch to name a few. All high quality, made in the USA.

The Tenacious line (including the Persistence and Ambitious) is awesome if you want good quality for less than $40. However, if you want to spend more, I would definitely recommend US made knives.

u/GrittyHandjob · 1 pointr/EDC

You could look at the Leatherman Skeletool CX. It's a capable multitool with a good 154CM blade that you can access while the tool is closed. I carry one when I don't want to, or can't, carry a standalone knife. It's a compromise, as there aren't as many tools or as beefy a knife, but if you're on a tight budget, it might be a good way to go. Handles all my EDC tasks just fine. The cheaper version has a serrated 420HC blade, which isn't bad, I do prefer the 154CM since it replaces a main blade.

If you want a traditional MT and knife, look at the Leatherman Rebar, and the Buck Vantage. The Rebar is one of my favorite MT's given cost and functionality. Replaceable cutters, an acceptable knife steel since it would be the backup to a main blade, and a good, capable group of tools for work beyond general EDC tasks. And the Buck, well... it's a Buck. It's not really cool or fun to sit and mess with, but you can generally assume you'll get good build quality, and S30V is a fantastic steel, especially for that price point.

u/Peoples_Bropublic · 1 pointr/EDC

Most jurisdictions that have a "must have a good reason" law have very unreasonable legal precedent for what is considered a "good reason" to carry a knife. But even in those places, going hiking, hunting, fishing, etc. is always considered a good reason, so the length limit shouldn't apply when you're out in the woods.

The Cold Steel Micro Recon Tanto is small, at 2 inches. But it fits your stated preferences and from what you've said it's legal to carry in public even without "good reason."

Its big brother is at the top of your budget and you would have to have a "good reason" to carry it.

for your price range i would go with a Kershaw they are my favorite brand for that price range. if you look you can get a Blur for $40-$60. idk how strict your budget is. I love the feel of the Blur

you can also look at some CRKT stuff. I don't have a lot of personal experience with them but they are in your price range.

CRKT Hootenanny

Flips better than folders I own that are 10x the price. Not kidding, the action is perfection. Solid construction, very slim, good design by Ken Onion. You can find it around $35 usually.

u/dbmeed · 1 pointr/EDC

Im about the same size, and while smaller knives do not usually look out of place, nor are they often overly uncomfortable, but I do prefer something a bit(or maybe a lot) bigger. Try looking at something like the CRKT M21, or maybe a Benchmade Adamas. While I havent carried either of them, I have tried them out a couple times and really liked them. That being said, I have no problems with more normal sized knives-the 940 for example is next on my acquisition list.

FRN Spyderco Native is a back-lock but gets you S30V under $100.

Spyderco Dragonfly 2 in ZDP189 is also a back-lock but is legal pretty much anywhere and has a kickass steel for under $70.

Honestly though, as a Sage owner... just bite the bullet and get the Sage. Or maybe look at building your own S30V Mini Grip.

u/cjcs · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

The 110 is a little chunky and heavy for everyday carry. A blade of that size isn't really necessary for utility use. I'd go for a 112 instead, same materials/construction/warranty, but with a smaller blade that weighs less and feels lighter in the pocket.

Also, be sure to check out the policies for your school (in addition to state/county/local laws) regarding knives. Regardless of legality, many universities have policies against carrying knives with blades above a certain length.

I got the gerber Bear Grylls folder for $25 and it has stood up to everything I've thrown at it. I have the 50/50 blade but it's big enough to have a good cutting area, doesn't have a pocket clip but isn't so large that it bothers me. I think they have a smaller one with a pocket clip if it's that important. Oh and the serrations on it have stood up to a ton of abuse up to cutting through small gauge wire with no maintenance

I've gone through quite a bit of pocket knives and am currently carrying this. It quickly became my favorite knife ever. Totally ergonomic in your hand with an excellent blade steel which surprisingly isn't that difficult to sharpen considering the hardness.

This is a fantastic suggestion. Thank you. Do you know what the differences are versus the SpyderCo Cat?

Any decent knife these days is going to have a detent to keep the blade from deploying prematurely.

In addition to lock-backs (the best of which is the Native) there is Benchmades Axis lock. It doesn't use a detent, but uses spring pressure to jam the lock pin into a milled flat on the back of the blade. Something like a Mini-Grip carries very securely.

Anyone have recommendations for a good, preferably cheap (~$50), fold out pocket knife that’ll sit well on my pocket and not destroy it?

I’m currently using this knife that I’ve had since high school and really don’t have anything against. But the clip caught on something a while and is all bent out of shape now.

This would be AMAZING!!! Would help me alot with work and general use, i have a very old para blade I was given from my dads friend who was a para, its a nice knife but extremely blunt, rusting and looks like it was used as a hammer! Would be nice birthday present which is coming in a few days! xD

This is the exact model. I have never used it after owning it for several years. It is still fairly sharp.

Sorry you had to deal with that. Order one of these and take it with you a few times until you're comfortable:
