Get a pair of wooden rings and say hello to the ultimate upper body workout.

>Should I still be using dumbbells for squats, and how? Should I do deadlifts?

For the moment I would stick with the squat progression. That should get you a decent ways wigthout having to use weights at all. If you get to the point where you can do a full deep step up then grab a small dumbell (like 2.5-5lb) and hold it in your hands while you do the step up, slowly increase the weight as you get comfortable with a given amount of weight.

I am of the opinion that you would be perfectly fine using a barbell to do barbell squats and deadlifts, but that's really up to you and your parents.

>some other weird machine where you lift yourself up to bars, but there's a footrest under you that just holds your weight (so I don't feel any exercise happening).

Is this an assited pullup/dip machine? If so there will be a stack of weights in it somewhere where you can select the weight with a pin. This is how much assistance the machine will give you. You should be able to either take the pin out so that the machine provides no assistance, you may also be able to fold up the foot rest thing so that it's just completely out of the way.

You might also see if the gym has a cable cross machine or a power cage as these will often have pullup bars on them.

>How do I use the smith machine for rows? I've read around here and r/Fitness that it's great for them, abd I know to put the bar to my waist, but should I put any weight on it or leave it as a blank bar?

It doesn't matter if there is weight on the bar or not for you if you are doing rows as you are not moving the bar. The bar is staying fixed so that you can hang (horizontally) off of it.

You can also use a squat rack and a barbell in a similar fashion. this video illustrates it pretty well.

The rings people are talking about are things like this or like this. If you're in the USA you should be able to get a pair on amazon for between $15-20. These are great as you can hang them off of just about anything and instantly have something to do pullups, rows, dips and just about any other exercise on. If you have any sort of income form allowance/mowing lawns/babysitting/etc. rings are an extremely valuable purchase and probably one of the most useful things you can have to workout with.

Good luck and please ask if you have more questions.

would you trust your face to equipment that is supposed to support like 30# of resistance?

I hang my rings over a large tree limb. Before I started I scouted several parks. You could also possibly use the swings in a park. But I'm a bit uncomfortable taking the kids area.
Not sure of the height you need. I just eyeballed it and bought [these] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009PVCMSS/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1).
I hope I don't need a trainer. I'm just taking things slow and being careful. There are lots of resources online and books. Search youtube. I've been enjoying Sam Tribbles videos. I found a really basic workout online from gold medal bodies. They also offer some sort of online course you can do. Though, I haven't really looked into that yet.
I've gotten pretty good at the 1st GMB workout. Now I'm researching a new one.
I'm also looking at doing aerial yoga. the Omni-Swing looks interesting. There is something about doing the aerial arts that gives me a really good lasting high(Joke Intended but still serious). Plus I feel like I've been getting a good workout and I've hurt my back several times doing regular weights. I think body movement stuff is really the way to go for me.

So, actually I would recommend against the buckle ones unless you plan to leave them in place. I got these and they're perfect:

https://www.amazon.com/Foot-Straps-Gymnast-Rings-Gymnastics/dp/B071F8TGQ5/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1519848543&sr=8-2&keywords=garage+fit+rings&dpID=41bTppwMGTL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

The buckle is a quick-release cam so you can raise and lower them with no effort, and easily take them down to bring them to the park.

Gymnastic rings are a little more pricey but worth it in my opinion. They allow you to do much more variety (push-ups, pull-ups, dips, ring rows, face pulls, core work) and are also easily portable to take when traveling.

These are the ones I have, they were a solid decision in my opinion.

I have these and like them a lot. The straps that come with these are solid, specifically the cam buckles. A lot of brands come with straps that have shitty cam buckles that will break before too long.

Hello there, I also have a power tower and I just bought my pair of rings. I have been training in the power tower for almost a year and there is a point where you won't be progressing unless you add extra weight to your exercises. For example, I have to add 10 kg to my pull-ups in order to be a challenge, but soon I will have to add 5 kg more if I want to keep improving.
But for me, the first thing gets obsolete is the push-ups and dips. So rings will give you extra challenge once you have mastered the normal push-ups and dips you can make in the power tower.

I bought this ones based on the reviews: https://www.amazon.com/Wooden-Olympic-Gymnastics-Rings-Emerge/dp/B01N463Q72/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1501858050&sr=8-5&keywords=rings+wooden+gymnastic

It seems the cheaper ones have straps that get loose after a while.

I have a pull up bar that's like this and some rings like this. Can I use either or both in any way to grease the groove to help overhead press? I found this exercise (suspended front raise) on EXRX, but I wasn't sure if it would really be so great for greasing the groove for overhead press.

Im looking to purchase some rings and have no idea what makes a good set. https://www.amazon.com/Reehut-Gymnastic-Adjustable-Straps-Buckles/dp/B01LXMBUPQ/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
This has good reviews but I'm not sure since it is half the price of most of the other rings on Amazon. Any help is appreciated!

I can recommend these, because they got length indicators on the straps and include a door anchor for rows etc. https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B01LX08N45/ they are available in flash sales from time to time for 33,99 EUR.
Sadly I believe they are only available in Germany, but I would look for a pair with indicators at least.

I’ve had these for just about a year and basically still seem brand new

Hey all!! Bookmarked the BWF video that hit front page of videos some time ago.

Finally got into gear and on my second day of the RR. I'm loving it! I already have a pull up bar, yoga mat and resistance bands.

I'm in decent enough shape to start at a harder difficulty, but I'm going level 1 on everything just to loosen my muscles and complete the whole regime. My back and wrists feel it!!

Anyone have input on using a doorway pull up bar with straps to do rows? Seems safe to me. I have a Golds Gym resistance bands kit kinda like this and the "rings" are a foam tube with plastic clip. Unsure if this will take 200lbs for elevated rows. Thinking of getting gymnastics rings for rows.

You don't have to use them like doing an Iron Cross, you can do dips or pull ups or push ups with them. Adjust the height to change the difficulty. You can get cheap rings on amazon or I got a thing that's sort of like a TRX called a jungle gym.

u/XeroXenith · 1 pointr/bodyweightfitness

OK thanks! One last thing: looking at the rows, I see what MrZparkle was saying: I seem to need some rings, right? Would these be okay? And once I get to the horizontal rows, would I need a low-down bar or something, or should I use the rings?

It seems like this would be harder on rings, since I'd have to use effort to keep my arm position correct, rather than just grabbing a bar.

u/RoyGilbertBiv · 1 pointr/Fitness

Gosh, I wish I had an Amazon affiliate account right now.. .

I got ones like these because I was damn near broke at the time and it was a different listing with a better deal. They're fine, slippery sometimes.

If I had to do it again I'd buy these nicer wooden ones.

u/kjfpouvy · 1 pointr/gainit

Dumbbells aren't essential, and most people at /r/bodyweightfitness don't use them regularly.

Many of the exercises you would use them for (flies, curls, rows, etc.) are replaced with an exercise on gymnastics rings.

Anyways, if your rope is going to be exposed to the elements, I would suggest staying away from those manila ropes. One of my fitness instructors mentioned that once they start to wear out, they can splinter and get stuck in your hands and arms. Sounds REALLy uncomfortable.
I...don't know if I would use the rope to make monkey bars. I would think the flexibility of the rope would taco your hand in the wrong direction and be pretty uncomfortable. I don't know for sure.
Piping would probably be cheaper.
Also, if you have a anchoring beam, I would recommend getting a pair of gymnastic rings and some nylon slings or loops that are similar to TRX. But TRX is kinda overpriced.

My nephews have a swing set that would be perfect for hanging some rings, been looking at Rogue and EXF. Anybody have any experience with these or can recommend another brand? I'm wary of the rubberized grip on the EXF rings longterm in the sun.

Thanks folks.

I think I'll go with the rings, just hoping that they will easily fit inside my 44l backpack.

I presume any rings will do, but want to double check that these are fine : http://www.amazon.co.uk/fitnessXzone-Gymnastic-Rings-Upper-Strength-y/dp/6030588184/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

Thanks again! :)
