it's this one! he told me $50, but it's actually a little cheaper, so even better haha

u/DieJunge · 18 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I was able to cut down on dusting by using this air purifier that also comes with a built in ionizer.

The ionizer will give dust particles a small electrical charge (not enough to damage electronics) and cause them to stick to surfaces. After using this I stopped seeing a lot of dust. As a bonus if you have dogs all the loose fur will start to clump together in certain corners for easy cleanup 👍

For the last year or so I've been having trouble getting my asthma under control and once allergy season kicked in I thought I was going to die with all of the sneezing and asthma attacks, so I bit the bullet and ordered one of these and I'm so incredibly impressed at the difference it's made!

Seriously, I wake up without coughing up a lung and without a sore throat! It's silent at the lowest level and even on the highest level it's quieter than a box fan.

If you're suffering and the meds aren't helping, I couldn't recommend one of these any more.

u/Ganjatarian · 6 pointsr/StuffOnCats

Thank you, I'm aware that any type of smoke is terrible for pets so I use one of these sploofs in conjunction with this air purifier which I can't recommend enough.

u/Myth3ry · 5 pointsr/sanfrancisco

Air purifier thread:

I got the LEVOIT HEPA and carbon filter LV-PUR131S nine months ago. It quickly collects a ridiculous amount of stuff; where does it all come from?! I use each filter for three months (replacements from Amazon are $29.99 so $10 month) and gently toothbrush the HEPA side once a month. My friends compliment my air! Its rectangular shape is much easier to position in a snug room than round units.

$169.99 after the green $20 coupon.

u/Tumorhead · 4 pointsr/cockatiel

If you can afford it I'd recommend getting a HEPA air filter to clean the air, since airborne pollutants are more dangerous than the raw stuff ;) (it also helps with kitchen smoke, aerosal sprays, incense, etc that might get at the birds).

u/fireduck · 4 pointsr/BitcoinMining

Is that dust on those fan intakes (already)?

If so, get an air filter. That isn't good for you or equipment.

I recommend these:
http://www.amazon.com/Holmes-HAP726-U-Allergen-Remover-Medium/dp/B000H0Y5XQ

They work well, don't take up huge amounts of space and you can replace the filters pretty easily.

This one? https://www.amazon.com/GermGuardian-AC4825-Cleaning-Sanitizer-Reduction/dp/B004VGIGVY It is a little Oval Shaped, but also is a tower.

This one? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V5ZB5WQ/ref=s9_acsd_top_hd_bw_bFgGp_c_x_5_w?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-2&pf_rd_r=H8S53T8NQ3HADCPDVA10&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=d4944677-c52a-52c7-9f81-33cb28e10243&pf_rd_i=3737411 it's definitely a rectangle and not an oval, and definitely a tower.

I vape a lot in my computer room. If an air filter will reduce / eliminate the VG build up on my monitor and stop my fire alarm from going off when I chain a few big puff, seems worth it to me.

Ok, you could tape shit to other shit. Or you could install an overkill/overpriced/over-loud industrial shop filter or just buy something designed for exactly what you're looking for

u/nauticalfiesta · 3 pointsr/Allergies

Bedding, vacuuming, and air filters.

You don't need to buy an expensive air filter, but having one will help remove "crap" from the air. I have one of these in our bedroom and it does lot to help pull some of the junk out of the air. They're not too expensive either. https://www.amazon.com/Holmes-Small-3-Speed-Purifier-Operation/dp/B00EDTKEE6/ref=sr_1_7?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1523408467&sr=1-7&keywords=holmes+air+filter

Bedding. Wash it before he comes over. It needs a wash on an allergen cycle, or a long warm cycle, with a long hot air dry. It doesn't matter if the dog doesn't go into the room often, it will make a difference for him.

Vacuuming. You should do this more than just before he comes over. If you run your regular vacuum daily it'll keep the hair under control, and do a better job at picking up the dander. A vacuum just before he comes over will introduce the dander back into the air.

(edit: forgot a word.)

Sorry you're dealing with this. I moved into an apartment years ago and had an allergic reaction, although not as severe.

I had the place professionally cleaned. Assurances from owners that recently renovated that there couldn't be mold. But I couldn't figure out. Every day my eyes were itchy and bloodshot and I was sneezing constantly.

I ended up buying an air purifier that helped. I will swear by this thing for the rest of my life. Whatever was bothering me, it was in the air. That thing did the trick. I still have it 8 years later. Working great.

Sure it's the apartment and not something with your furniture or bedding? Try laundering all of that.

I have this one at home and it seems to have cut down on some of my symptoms. I still take a Claritin every day, but this helps at night when the pill is wearing off.

I bought the Winix unit a few months ago and I'm extremely happy with it. It's ~$160 but worth every penny in my opinion. I run it every night on my side of the bed and I'm waking up asthma free nearly every morning. It's a little loud on the highest setting but the white noise actually helps us sleep. Would definitely buy this one again.

Ozium spray is great for a short term fix, but they also make a gel (Amazon link) that is quite good - I leave one in the drawer at work where i keep my gym clothes, its been smelling good for months now.

The spray is strong and unpleasant for the first minute after spraying, but that fades quickly.. just be sure to spray a very small amount, the stuff is super powerful!

Another option is an air purifier, i have this one and it keeps my house smelling fresh while also filtering a lot of dust and dander.

u/PixelRice · 3 pointsr/ferrets

Don't bathe him too often - the oils come back with a vengeance.

I have an air purifier in my room where her cage is and we can't smell her at all.

Here's the link on Amazon.

u/CorbinDallasMyMan · 2 pointsr/RATS

If you're not currently using an absorbent layer under the fleece, you should start. Without an absorbent layer, all fleece does is keep their feet dry. As for controlling odors, just using fleece is the same as doing absolutely nothing at all. Some absorbent options include UHaul padding, towel, washable incontinence pads, etc. Even with an absorbent layer, fabric (when compared to other bedding options) does the least to control odors. Consider other substrate options like aspen or kild-dried pine shavings or paper based beddings like recycled newspaper pellets or carefresh. Different options will have different pros/cons so trying out different things is a good idea.

Of course you don't want to use scents and air fresheners but an air purifier will help. I use a cheap Germ Guardian. It has a HEPA filter as well as a carbon filter. The carbon filter actually does the most for smells. Don't use ionizing air "filters." They're not good for little rat lungs.

Have you checked to make sure your cage (itself) isn't holding odors? Does it smell even right after you wash it? If so, you could try spraying it down with a water/vinegar mix or maybe the cage materials have absorbed urine and the cage just needs to be replaced.

I don't let my boys run around on my carpet or furniture unless they're covered with an old blanket or something. I just saw a post where someone was trying to figure out how to get the pee smell out of their hardwood floors. Even though my boys are pretty good about using their litter boxes when out of the cage, they'll still drip pee everywhere. There's no stopping it.

u/madwill · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Well the only important thing here is the true HEPA filter. So fresh home.

The number beside it is the intended amount of square feed. You'd like it to filter.

From 150 to 450.

The bottom ones (plasma serie) are just the old models. Never mind them.

Either go with http://www.amazon.com/Winix-FresHome-P300-Cleaner-PlasmaWave/dp/B009ZJY2OM/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1421693500&sr=8-5&keywords=winix&pebp=1421693529465&peasin=B009ZJY2OM

Definitely get a couple of good purifiers for the main areas of the house he spends a lot of time.

I have a RabbitAir for the living area: https://www.rabbitair.com/products/minusa2-air-purifier?variant=29446108577815

A smaller Winix unit for my bedroom: https://winixamerica.com/product/p150/

I also have a small BlueAir 411 for my office: Blue Pure 411 Air Purifier 3 Stage with Two Washable Pre-Filters, Particle, Carbon Filter, Captures Allergens, Odors, Smoke, Mold, Dust, Germs, Pets, Smokers, Small Room https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073WJDQMN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Ua8MDbSQP8GVM

Now, the Rabbit is a great unit, but it ain’t cheap. I have had the Winix for maybe 4 years and it runs great. It was the first hepa purifier I bought. I picked up the Rabbit and Blue at the same time a couple years ago when we moved to a bigger place. They all work as advertised and I have never had issues with them.

Keep in mind there is also the yearly cost of replacing the filter, and with most replacing a pre-filter every few months. But they are so much better than the cruddy filters you get in most A/C systems.

There are lots of other great units and brands across a range of prices, so do some research to find what is best for your family. Keep in mind the size of the room when picking a unit. No need spending on something you don’t really need size wise.

u/Mcmanzi · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

A Bluair 503 runs 24/7 in my basement and we couldn't live without it. They make smaller models for bedrooms, ect... but if you are looking to clear the air in a large room, you can't beat this product.

It could be that there is a lot of dust/mold from the apartment or even some cat hair in the air. Get an air purifier and sad if that helps. I recommend this one: Germ Guardian AC4820 22” True... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RX22TCY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I live in an old apartment with a dog and a cat and I was having terrible attacks (like coughing so hard you vomit) and we bought a couple of these and now I haven’t had a bad attack in weeks!

PS: don’t get rid of the cat

There are air fresheners, candles, and even wax melts specifically designed for homes with pets, and some of them aren't that expensive. I have used Glade's pet-formula spray and I really like a solid air freshener from a company called "Citrus Magic". They have a clean linen smell as well as the citrus. Two other things we do is sprinkle baking soda in the litter boxes every so often (along with scooping every day), and we also have an air purifier. We got a cheap one off Amazon but it works surprisingly well.

I recently picked this guy up and I've been pretty impressed so far. Had an issue where I would cook something fragrant like bacon or garlic, and the smell would hang for a day or so. Had friends two hours after cooking and they didn't notice anything.

They have a version that's cheaper that doesn't have the smart features, but I like having everything connected up so I can schedule my robot vacuuming and my high powered air-purifying at the same time to pick up the dust.

u/financiallyanal · 2 pointsr/Allergies

This is probably the best answer.

I think there are enough scientific studies to show that particulate counts drop when the filter is running. And you would expect that, so it shouldn't be a surprise. The benefit to the person goes beyond the research that I've seen so far, but admittedly, I haven't spent too much time looking at it.

I use an air purifier, because it might help - I don't know if it does, but in the chance that it does provide a benefit, I'm happy to be using it. There's really no risk except the up front cost and ongoing filters.

This is the one I use, which has a 10% discount currently: https://www.amazon.com/GermGuardian-AC4900CA-Sanitizer-Allergens-Guardian/dp/B00V5ZB5WQ/

u/Tadddd · 2 pointsr/relationship_advice

HEPA filter with a carbon pre-filter in your room. Set it on auto and let it run. Keep your door closed always.

Do you share the cost of utilities? You might need to discuss with them why you’re buying one before that conversation gets harder later.

There are smaller and cheaper ones from the brands that I’ve posted, but they will probably have a minimal effect. Also, fuck Dyson. Overpriced.

I like the dusters so much I'm considering trying the dry floor swiffer to tackle the cat hair between vacuuming days. Anyway, I do have suggestions - the purifier I use (which I really like) was discontinued but this one is from the same company and seems to have all the same features. (I have another one on my wish list that has good reviews but I haven't tried.)

I live in Canada, a locally available filter I bought a couple years back is what I use; The Honeywell Round Air Purifier 50150-N 12

The damm thing is loud as hell so I have the timer set to avoid running at night. And I have a dog as well; one that barely sheds hair- even so, pets are even more reason to get a filter running.

The air purifier market is really subjective per product; I'd probably stick to Amazon if you want to find good ones. I'll most likely buy a couple more off Amazon and place them throughout the house.

And finally of course; air quality. Yes, there is a notable difference the second you use purifier regularly, the latter being: less boogers, less dust falling everywhere.

u/alreadyhomealready · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I've had the Winix 5300 for about 2 and a half years now and it has worked great. However, I would recommend the Winix P300 over the 5300. It is an updated model and now comes with a 3 year warranty as opposed to the 1 year warranty on the 5300. It uses the exact same filters as the 5300. The only thing with the P300 is that you cannot turn off the PlasmaWave (which you can do on the 5300), but this probably is not an issue for most people. If you have a bigger space, there is also the Winix P450.

Sounds like an air purifier is a good fit for you!

Since you are going for long periods without much outside air flow, I'd personally go for a machine that has both an activated carbon filter as well as a HEPA filter. The activated charcoal will help cut down on lingering gases from cooking, cleaning, etc. It also acts as a general odor absorber, which is always a plus, especially for dog owners. ;)

Make sure that the machine you get has a prefilter, which will extend the life of the HEPA and AC filters.

Ensure also that it doesn't have an ionizer, or that it can be run with the ionizing part off. An ionizing purifier generates ozone, which is unhealthy in closed environments, especially for birds.

I'd go for something like this air purifier (not an affiliate link, I promise). Am not familiar with it personally, but it has all the right features as well as good reviews. Its replacement filters are $50. If you run it during the winter, you'd probably be replacing them only once a year. It's rated for 538 square feet - if the room in question is bigger or significantly smaller, you should look for a different size.

u/JediLibrarian · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

After some recommendations in this subreddit, I recently purchased a Winix P300. I cannot in any way speak to its durability. It is, however, quiet and effective at removing odors in the space it's rated for (in this case, 300ft2). I've found it's deft at removing odors from cooking as well as odors from the bathroom (including the litter box). It automatically detects particulates and adjusts speeds accordingly. I did have one disappointment: The bottle of laundry detergent fell and busted, leaving a nice mess to clean up. The smell was pretty strong, so I put this purifier nearby and manually set the unit to medium, and left it there overnight. I noticed very little difference in the "fragrance" the next day. This may be due to particulate size, or simply concentration.

It says it works on smoke, but I can't test this.

I don't know anything about that one specifically. I feel like the whole "kills airborne germs" stuff is too much of a gimmick, but I may be wrong.

I have a Holmes unit very similar to this. It has 3 panel filters and can fit a carbon odor filter in each. It's a simple intake > filters > fan > output kind of unit. With 3 cats and a dog it seems to work quite nicely. It can get loud on the highest setting, but you stop noticing pretty quickly. The drawback is that replacing all filters at once sucks due to price and that they come in 2-packs instead of 3. So you end up buying 4 HEPA filters every other time.

It is up to you in the end. Just get the best HEPA unit that fits your budget.

NTA - sometimes apartment living isn’t ideal since you’re in such proximity to one another, but you shouldn’t feel bad about cooking for yourself.

If you are super concerned about the smell maybe get an air purifier for your place. Like this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Meleden-Purifier-Filters-Upgraded-Purifiers/dp/B07PHD9P7P/ref=mp_s_a_1_11?keywords=air+purifier&qid=1557766758&s=gateway&sr=8-11

I would smoke spliffs and joints in my apartment in college and used one of these to filter the smell of the smoke out and it worked so well! Considering omelettes have a much less sticky and pungent smell than weed, it’d probably work wonders for you!

u/TheIronKGiant · 1 pointr/buildapc

This really depends on a lot of things. The kitchen is usually the primary source of indoor air pollution. I have a PM2.5 monitor and cooking bacon and eggs puts it off the chart. It's extremely important to have good ventilation when you cook (which most kitchens don't have). I've also encountered terrible indoor air quality around town in restaurants, etc.

If you live in Salt Lake and don't want to die young a HEPA filter is a sound investment. They are not crazy expensive and I've verified with my particulate counter that they do work very well. I have purchased probably a dozen of this one because its cheap and effective but there are other options that are more quiet. I have two in my home and the rest around the office or given away to friends. They have an updated model that I have not used here. I will sometimes travel with one if its convenient.

While I'm on the subject. This is unrelated to what you said but here is some more pertinent info about Utah air quality:

Car air filters surprisingly do a good job and I read very low pm2.5 concentrations even when driving down i-15 on an inversion day in traffic, but there are also air scrubbers designed to run off the 12v in your car.

If you're going outside for longer than 15 minutes and especially if you are exercising, wear a P100 rated mask such as this one.

During inversion season I take my air quality meter around and test all over the place and post the results to twitter if anyone is interested. The numbers reported by the state are accurate in the sense that they give a baseline by which to measure trends over time, but they are completely inaccurate in terms of what you will actually encounter when you go outside. You can expect to encounter up to DOUBLE what the state reports. A local hero has set up a network of sensors that will give you a better idea of what is going on. You can find the info at purpleair.org you can also host your own sensor.

Thousands of people are dying each year due to our poor air quality. It is taking YEARS off of our lives. So the last thing I'm going to say is please support initiatives to expand public and alternative transportation, promote clean energy, and to eliminate major sources of pollution in the valley. Demand from your candidates that they make air quality a priority. Other cities around the world have made real positive impacts on their air quality just by trying, so it's not impossible.

I don't know how long it will last but I have this one:

It's been running pretty much 24/7 for about 3 years on speed 1 or 2. Even had some beer spilled on it. I've only changed the filters once, probably should do it again. The filter had a ton of dust and dirt on it when I changed it.

It's not washable but if you replace it every 6-12 months, you should be fine. They tell you do replace it every 2 months but they just want money.

I can't say how well it removes smells because I don't smoke or anything. But it keeps my room fairly dust free and that's what I got it for.

I use this air purifier. It has different levels with different noiseevels. It is a bit more expensive but it will help keep your air clean from dust, debris and pollen.

It's a bit pricey, but I cannot recommend an air filter/purifier enough. The main result of course is cleaner air, but there's more. The sound is great for blocking out whatever is going on around you, in the other apartments, etc. But, the best thing here is you'll get used to the sound. Before long your body will be ready to sleep when you hear it. You'll condition yourself! :-)

We've used them for years and our kids love theirs. It was great traveling as we could just turn it on in whichever room they were in at night and they'd crash right out.

You may not need one, you're a big girl now! But I do recommend it.

>Delhi's not that cold

Compared to what? Last winter the January low was around 9C, is that not cold enough for you?

Now to your question - Air purifiers are really your only option. The US Embassy in Delhi has at least 1800 of these Blueair 503 air purifiers in their building.

How big is your house and how much are you willing to spend? Cheap ones that around ~10k might work for small rooms. Some will have humidifying ability as well. Don't buy ionic, stick with HEPA filters.

OR you can go full mental and fill your rooms with houseplants (see Kamal Meattle). He refers to this NASA clean air study (or wiki).

I have two germ guardian purifiers. One upstairs and one down. They actually take all scents out of the house which is fantastic since I hate smelling anything. (Cooking smells whatever anything) Smoke totally isn't an issue, or animal dander or any other allergy type things.

I use a Blueair 503 for that. Keeps the games safe and clean.

Probably not the reason why my wife bought it but that's how I see it anyway.

I just bought this. It was the cheapest of Consumer Reports "Recommend" air filters.

It makes some decibels on the highest settings but I actually like the white noise it creates. Covers up the sounds of my upstairs neighbor and I think I sleep better because of it. Wouldn't want it if I were watching TV and I turn it off for phone calls.
