Think about all the things that you spend money on on a weekly basis. Food, toiletries, housing, these are all things that are one time use and completely disposable. This sub-reddit has the belief that the clothing gives us the incredible ability to change the way that people perceive us, and the way that we perceive ourselves, in a fairly cost effective and re-usable way.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, these pants are terrible, and you should spend $40 on a new pair of dark wash Levi's. Dying jeans is possible, but those are gonna look like shit no matter what you do. Many on this sub-reddit have no problem dropping $300 on jeans that they wear almost every day. So yeah. Buy these:

First off, congrats on getting in better shape! If you're continuing to gain or lose weight, I would advise to hold off on investing too much money on clothes until your weight and build stabilize.

As far as what your style is, the first outfit looks like dressed up casual dadwear, and the second outfit looks more college student on a budget.

The best way to improve your style is to start from the bottom up. Get yourself a good pair of sneakers and trade in that pre-distressed denim for some slim, dark denim like these Levi's 511's.

If I was you I would try the Levi 508s. It fits like a a 514 in the seat and tapers down to a 511 fit below the knee.

Not too familiar with HM jeans- had pair once for a little while. But in the ~$50 range I would suggest Uniqlo's selvedge denim and probably my favorite pair of jeans

Note for Uniqlo make sure you try some for size-they take slim seriously.

So I'm out of town and in a bit of a bind. I was invited to a cocktail thing I want to look nice for (business casual setting), and currently my most appropriate clothes are a light blue gingham shirt with three ties I can borrow (none solid), with a pair of either slacks that fit lose around the legs, or slim fit Levis. All I have are run of the mill black dress shoes for this.

Do you have amazon prime? You can buy NF on amazon and their ship/return/replace turn over is very fast. Maybe buy two pairs and return the one that doesn't fit?

What's your budget? Here's a fantastic quality pair from another brand for $120 and it isn't vanity sized.

I had the same issue! I had to ditch the skinnies, and went for the 508. Much more room around the thighs, but still getting the good slim fit. These are the tapered kind seen here

GAP slim fit seem to be pretty close, with maybe a little more room in the seat, you might try those. Amazon also has quite a few 513s left too.

thrift is nice, just make sure stuff fits and don't compromise. it takes time to find quality stuff. i recommend going to cities or more metropolitan/wealthier areas for better items.

I bought one of these because my old Jansport finally died and I needed a replacement asap. I was wary about it, but I needed something quickly. Piece of junk. The decorative shit they sew on comes undone, and the strap ripped after a month of light (10-15 lb) usage. Do yourself a favor and avoid.

I also bought pair of union blue Levi 501s from Amazon. I really like the color, and they fit well. There are a lot of negative comments claiming that the jeans are slimmer and lighter than they were in the 80s, which I don't really see as a downside, but I'm afraid it might mean a shorter lifespan. I'd like to get some different fits for comparison, but I haven't had any luck in my (short) search for 505s and 550s in union blue.

I'm not sure if there's a replacement for the 508 soft khakis but I believe they're sometimes called British Soft Khaki or British Khaki after searching a bit. I found some on Amazon, Zappos, JCPenny, and Sears.
