I got this Buddy Lee Rip Off Rope for cheap in January and it's been fine for me.

You can adjust it without cutting it to get a good idea if a length feels right for you.

Also, keep in mind, that PVC grows and shrinks slightly with temperature. Since it's still fairly warm out, I would tie 1 or two knots in the rope when you measure it, this way if you end up jumping in a colder climate you can undo a knot and have proper length.

I've found that expertboxing.com has really basic beginner's workouts. With being a hockey player, I'm sure your cardio is already pretty good. I'd recommend buying a jump rope. You can buy a cheap speed rope for about $10 here. Obviously you don't have all of the equipment in that article, but hopefully that does you some good.

I think either of those would work fine. "Speed" ropes aren't just for double unders. My suggestion, buy both, try both, and return the one you don't like.

I haven't really used enough different ropes to give a good suggestion. I have a rope like this...
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B019XUVDDU/ref=mp_s_a_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1501022216&sr=8-14&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=jump+rope

...its totally basic, I've probably had it for like 10 years now, although I haven't always used it regularly, but it's always done the job when needed.

i use this one and it’s great

Ah, here we go. Looks like they still sell through Amazon, but the name has been changed to 'Elite SRS'
https://www.amazon.com/EliteSRS-Beginner-Jump-Rope-Adults/dp/B07HM7WP9W/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1539987305&sr=8-17&keywords=elitesrs+jump+rope

Highly recommended.

Agreed on rope choice. You have to develop great feel for speed ropes and they are not a great beginner option.
Crossrope is my favorite and has the ability to push you a lot more do to the interchangeable weighted ropes.

Here is a good affordable option that would also be great for getting you started.

Both of these can be used on most surfaces. I have been jumping rope for over 10 yrs and have to disagree with the idea that jump roping on concrete is bad. If your wearing shoes and not doing a bunch of doubles and triples your fine. If doing it properly, you just don't jump high enough to do damage. People jogging on roads are at far more risk imo. That being said, a mat is never a bad idea.
Concrete does wear down ropes faster so I always choose the smoothest surface possible.

i've owned 4-5 ropes in the price range that didn't work out. If you can dig a little deeper, I highly recommend this set. https://www.amazon.com/Crossrope-Jump-Rope-Get-Lean/dp/B07CR5DMQG

If you need to stay 30 or under, this one is nice too but it is very industrial and may leave you with a few lashes. https://www.amazon.com/WOD-Nation-Speed-Jump-Rope/dp/B00ZWDJ7PO

$500 home gym challenge
Coming in under the wire here.

I optimized for someone just starting out, and tried to balance between strength, conditioning, and gymnastic tools. The goal is to be set up for a good while without getting bored.

I’m a female so I opted for the 15kg bar :) but hey, it’s my gym, after all. One could switch the kettlebell out for a heavier bar.

$149 squat rack with pull-up bar

$149 iheartsynergee s-2 15kg bar

$120 for 240 pounds of secondhand plates

$18 rings - hang from chin-up bar

$33 resistance bands set

$5 jump rope

$25 20# kettlebell

Total:
499.18

(Edit: list formatting)

No bench - a quality bench is at least $60, but it only buys you one exercise. Can do floor presses for a while.

Spent bit more money on the bar - will support #1500 so should last a while. The squat rack also allows for hanging rings or resistance bands from the bar to do pull-ups or ring exercises.

Enjoy! Thanks for the fun challenge.

I only just managed to pull off my first cross over this morning and managed to push it to 3 in a row.

I use this rope.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0772M72CQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_MtKSCbRGJJFAM

Although I'm still working it out for myself, I think it's really just down to timing the cross of your arms back and forth at the right speed.

When I miss time the cross It gets tangled and I get a painfull whip to the back of my head

u/echofir · 2 pointsr/jumprope

I would suggest to check the money rope from Rush Athletics:

https://www.amazon.com/RUSH-ATHLETICS-SPEED-ROPE-Yellow/dp/B075LZHGPS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1536668202&sr=8-3&keywords=money+rope

I use it all the time and very satisfied with it.

u/nitalong · 2 pointsr/crossfit

Are you using a weighted rope? After reccs here, I got this one and it made ALL the difference!

Bought this the first week of April this year after going through a walmart skipping rope every month for a long time. Im very happy with it for $10.

>5 billion speed rope

Is this the one?

u/Foomer · 1 pointr/crossfit

I'd try something like this. Segmented Jump Rope - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GGKAD0Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_5uXhAbMJSZQHN
A workshop I attended used them to hone double unders.

u/LetsTalkJumpingRope · 1 pointr/jumprope

I would recommend this or something similar. You should know, though, heavier ropes hurt way worse than cabled speed ropes. Any rope that is really worth it is going to cause you pain when you get hit. This is what makes skipping so valuable, it's self limiting.

u/reddeadzaddy · 1 pointr/workout

I'd recommend buying any cheap jump rope to start so you can learn how to jump properly. (not sure your experience level based off this post)

Then, when you're comfortable, I'd consider this set. $88 but well worth the $$. I've had mine for close to a year now...I use it every workout (I'm in the gym 6-7 days a week) and it's still in great condition. Because of its ball-bearings system, it's got the smoothest jump. The weighted ropes also engage your shoulders/biceps. It's awesome, man...Amazon link -

u/Rexob85 · 1 pointr/jumprope

I suggest something lighter before going straight to 1lb. There's a HUGE difference between a speed rope that may weigh ~3oz and 16oz. However, if you want a ~1lb rope, Rush Athletics makes a rope that weighs .9lb found Here on Amazon. The other option is CrossRope which is a really great system, and costs more. However, it offers a LOT of flexibility.
