You don't have to spend that much for good coffee.

You can get a pour over dripper for $12 on Amazon

100 filters for $6

Electric kettle for $12

Manual coffee grinder for $10

Digital scale for $10

That's $50 for gear, (you can probably pick up some of that even cheaper if you look around) and then you can spend what you want on beans. I'm really into Stumptown coffee right now, which is $18 for 12oz. but you can definitely go a little cheaper or a lot more expensive depending on your tastes.

You can spend as much as you want making coffee, but I haven't noticed a discernible difference between coffee from that setup and coffee from a $500ish setup. A large part of what makes a cup of pour over good is the skill level of the person pouring it, and there's no reason to spend more than $75-$100 on gear until you reach a point where you know for sure your bottleneck is your equipment. I've been making my own coffee this way (as well as french press and espresso) for a few years and I still don't feel like I need to upgrade.

EDIT: Ignore the scale I linked, refer to /u/throwswithfats comment below instead.

Sounds like you could use a [collapsable kettle] (https://www.amazon.com/Useful-UH-TP147-Electric-Collapsible-Travel/dp/B00ZJHXNIU).

Or even better, you could use an [immersion heater] (https://www.amazon.com/Lewis-N-Clark-Portable-Immersion/dp/B001U0PB1C/ref=pd_lpo_60_bs_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&refRID=HQQTG0FG7821QSZJFXMB).

Immersion heaters work with any size container you want.

> I think there was an EU legislation brought in recently (couple of years ago?) that stated all new kettles must be shit.

Nope, that's a complete load of bollocks. Go to literally any place that sells kettles, and there's plenty of 3kW kettles. There always has been, and there always will be. Here's one from Curry's, here's one from Argos, and here's one from Amazon.

A 3 kW kettle uses the same amount of power to boil 1l of water as a 1.8 kW one of the same design, it just does it faster.

This is entirely OPs fault for buying a shit kettle, not the EU's fault.

I think to best answer this request, we'll need a bit more info. Are you ok with a manual grinder, or do you prefer an electric grinder? Do you want a drip brewer or a pour over set up? Are you looking to get into espresso? And, what is your actual budget in your local currency?

And now for a guess at what might work for you...

A [Melitta Plastic Pour Over Dripper](https://www.amazon.com/Melitta-Ready-Single-Coffee-Brewer/dp/B0014CVEH6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1527536804&sr=8-1&keywords=mellita) $5 to $6 (a lot of grocery stores carry these in stock)

A box of #2 Cone filters at your local grocery store $2

If you want an automatic drip brewer, and you are making smaller amounts for just you, the [Bonavita 5 cup](https://www.amazon.com/Bonavita-BV1500TS-Carafe-Coffee-Stainless/dp/B00SK5IXPQ/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1527537674&sr=8-4&keywords=bonavita+brewer) is wroth a look. it runs about $66. I have the 8 cup for the wife and I and we love it.

Filters can be purchased, again, at your local grocery store for about $2.

[Brewista SmartPour Kettle w. Thermometer](https://www.amazon.com/Brewista-Variable-Temperature-Kettle-BKV12S02NA/dp/B01CFBBUVY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1527537033&sr=8-1&keywords=brewista%2Bsmart%2Bpour&th=1) $40. There are cheaper ones, but I personally have this one and have loved it.

[Scale](https://www.amazon.com/Jennings-CJ-4000-Compact-Digital-Adapter/dp/B004C3CAB8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1527537139&sr=8-1&keywords=Jennings+CJ4000) This is a must. $30

[Bratza Encore](https://www.amazon.com/Baratza-Encore-Conical-Coffee-Grinder/dp/B007F183LK/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1527537371&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=baratza+encore&psc=1&smid=A302OQK4GZWXCC) Grinder is the default recommendation around here, and for good reason. It's high quality, and easily serviceable. New they run $139, but you can save $40 and pick up a [refurb](https://www.baratza.com/product/encore-refurb/) (still with the 1 year warrantee) for $99 direct from Baratza.

If you want a cheaper option, and don't mind a manual hand grinder, there are a few options, but the [Hario Skerton Pro](https://www.amazon.com/Hario-Skerton-Ceramic-Grinder-MMCS-2B/dp/B01MXJI90S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1527537536&sr=8-1&keywords=hario+skerton+pro) is about the lowest cost / still decent quality grinders, grinder that most would recommend. It runs about $60, and personally, I'd spend the extra $30 on an Encore refurb.

Happy Mug Beans are a pretty great option. I really enjoy the Big Foot Espresso blend (despite it's name) as a pour over, and even like it in my drip brewer. The Inspirational Artist Blend is a great option too. But really just try them out and see what you like. Their bags (for 1lbs of whole beans) run $11 - $13

Hope that helps.

Does it have to be a "pour type" kettle?

I know some Japanese-style "electric pots" are made in Japan, e.g. https://www.amazon.com/Zojirushi-CD-LFC30-Panorama-Window-Boiler/dp/B0166OD6PO

[Probably a bit price-related as to which are made in Japan and which are made in China... and Zojirushi is a premium brand...]

u/FishermanFizz · 2 pointsr/tea

Hey, I'm looking to get a new water boiler and thinking of getting a Zojirushi finally. I'm wondering what the difference between these two models are (besides water capacity) and if the more expensive one is worth the extra price:

That's why I said I'm looking at getting an electric kettle like this

I got the reusable cups cause I figured I'd use it while I still have it

I should also note that when I first got the Keurig I did use the plastic K Cups until I found out how bad they were, plus the cups are so damn expensive

u/pr0grammer · 2 pointsr/Coffee

You could fill a kettle downstairs, carry it upstairs, and then have it heat. Here's one where the kettle detaches from the power supply that also includes a dripper: https://smile.amazon.com/BoldDrop-Electric-Gooseneck-Kettle-Stainless/dp/B01EUG2ZSO/

u/ummmbacon · 2 pointsr/Judaism

I got this one:

Chefman Instant Electric Hot... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CNOUJ0Q?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Through a warehouse deal, it has a lock so you can’t use the auto control and it will only keep warm and not boil. I’ve left it on all weekend and it’s been fine so far.

u/LambOfLiberty · 2 pointsr/tea

I went with this one Magic Mill MEK-204 Digital Electric Cordless Kettle with Removable Tea Infuser https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018GVMXTU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_2IUyybRT90YAK
It was only like $40 but now it is showing $120 for whatever reason

u/hornytoad69 · 2 pointsr/tea

This is what I have. It's great for me.

17 oz French Press. Online ordered light roasted coffee, preferably fruity notes, ground about as coarse as a conical burr grinder goes. Water 45 seconds off boil (electric kettle). Fill (in my case glass) french press with boiling water and wait 30 seconds to heat it up (use the freshly boiling water for the first 30 seconds and dump and fill with coffee in the remaining 15). Pour water out. Fill with coffee and water halfway soaking grounds entirely, wait 1 minute. Stir and simultaneously add the other half of water. Wait 3 min 45 sec and plunge to 4 min. Pour into some temporary storage cup right away and clean any involved tools right away to avoid stains or flavors soaking into them. Then a teaspoon of sugar per 8 oz cup of coffee and enjoy.

Whole process takes about 10 minutes if you include water boiling , 4-5 if you don't. Can prep or clean as you go between water boiling and brewing. I keep it pretty precise or I end up with bad/off cups of coffee and it works for me.

Looking into repurchasing an Aeropress and buying a new Chemex for more variety in how I brew. Easier to make a smaller cup with the aeropress (wish they made more than the one size) and more difficult with a french press unless you have a couple sizes. Chemex looks more flexible (and has several sizes).

u/ijssvuur · 2 pointsr/ExMormonTea

That actually looks really great, I normally just brew it in the pitcher, but that would work really well for a cold brew. You don't need to spend too much on a french press, I've seen them for up to $40, which is absurd.

I use this kettle, and it works perfectly, in case you do want something new.

I appreciate the compliment, haha, but my knowledge is just a compilation of independently tested random internet sources. I do what I can, though.

I'm not sure how variable you need your temperatures, but the higher end Zojirushi water pots tend to have several settings.

Zojirushi CD-LFC50 Panorama Window Micom Water Boiler and Warmer, 169 oz/5.0 L, White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0166OD6J0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_mxmbAb7S2D9PY

u/spankyiloveyou · 1 pointr/Cooking

I have a Zojirushi water boiler so that I have boiling water all the time, instantly.

u/Mabisakura · 1 pointr/tea

Anyone have real information on this kettle? When I saw this at a Sam's Club, it said it had 4 preset temperature settings, the manual says it can reach "any exact temperature in increments of 10 starting at 115F (while showing 180F in a demonstration picture) ," some reviews say you can pick any temperature, and others say it has 4 presets.

There's so much conflicting information that I don't know how this kettle handles temperature. So, does someone actually have experience with this kettle and know how its temperature settings work?

Also, I saw this kettle for $39.98 in Sam's Club

u/DuePomegranate · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

Or one of these electric hot water dispensers. You will always have boiled, hot water at a push of a button (it keeps the water hot after boiling).
