My commute is 4.5 miles long with my 2 kids daycare at 2 miles along the same route. At first I just pulled them in a trailer until they got better at riding their 12" bikes (around 3.5 years old). I wrapped a old cable lock I had around their seatpost and had them lock them up at the daycare. It was dark many days when we left, so I got some be seen lights for them. I also picked up a Brightz light bar to mount on their frame which they loved (I do to, I use them as well). When it rained, they went back in the trailer since their bikes didn't have fenders. The biggest problem I had was them keeping their speed up, bad railroad crossings (factory service entrance, just messed up pavement), and general child unpredictability. The worst issue was my son trying to stop at the corner after coming down a big hill. He was still on training wheels and managed to tip it just right to bring the back tire off the ground and ended up crashing into the street. Traffic was light and in middle of the signal changes so no other problems.
They managed to get off the training wheels a month or 2 before turning 4. It is also at their 4th birthday they got 16" bikes. I ended up getting Bike Star bikes sons and daughters which are great kids commuter bikes, I have posted reviews for them. The issues I had here was just getting them started from a stop, so I made them walk their bikes across the street and start them again from the other side. For the minor roads feeding into the one we was on, it was quiet enough to just keep riding through. This time when it rained though, they had to wear rain coats.
This year I got my older son a 20" Islabike in commuter dress, and it is awesome. However things change and we went from daycare in home babysitter, but I still take them on bikes to school every once in a while.
