Can't say for certain.
I'm just sharing the idea, I found it going through old bookmarks.

I'm sure the weight of the little cable clamps is negligible, and that just leaves the 5/16 rod.

According to this 36" of steel rod weighs 12.5 oz.

A base plate is about 3" long, and looking at the picture it seems to about as long as 3 baseplates. X 2 Because its U shaped, and that looks to be about 18"

So I bet he took a 36" rod and cut it in half.

So thats gives you 6.25 oz for each guard.

You could always just buy these and also get a saw. Alternatively, use this page, select the approximate size of your rod (in this case 8mm/251-498.5mm) and then enter the exact length you need in the "customize" section before adding it to your cart.

When in the same predicament as you, I went ahead and just made my own new bed:

(1/4" x 13.25" x 6.5")

All told, that's ~$50 for pretty much exactly the same thing. All you need to be able to do is drill holes in the corners of the plate.
