There's a pretty easy way to avoid this:

  1. Take a warm bath with some bath salts. After about 10 minutes of soaking or so, exfoliate your skin, try this: (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001POYT16/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) That's just an example, you can get some epsom salt (same stuff) at Walmart for half the price.

  2. Exfoliating the skin first prevents ingrown hairs. Super important. The first time I did this, I did not know how to shave my body properly and I ended up being way too vigorous and getting lots of nasty razor bumps. To exfoliate I used:

  3. Loofah or Pouf (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CTQMIC/ref=oh_details_o02_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) again check Walmart, it'll be cheaper. The main idea here is that you want to exfoliate dead skin and loosen up any hairs that are growing.

  4. St. Ives Exfoliating Body Wash (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004JLGC12/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) This is a really great natural exfoliant that you can put on the loofah/poof while you scrub

  5. After exfoliation, you shave. I shave against the grain with a good Gillette razor using this shaving cream: Cremo Cream (http://www.amazon.com/Cremo-Astonishingly-Superior-Shaving-Creams/dp/B003FVWRCK/ref=pd_sbs_hpc_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=191FPDNMEKJB5PRZXF94) Which does a really tremendous job. You only need to spread a little bit of it around and it helps to give a really great shave without any irritation (great for both men and women). Plus it last a long time.

  6. Moisturize with your favorite skincare lotion, brand doesn't really matter. You just want to keep that area moist and healthy.

  7. LAST STEP. Most important, DO NOT DO THIS THE SAME DAY YOU SHAVE. DO IT EITHER A COUPLE DAYS BEFORE OR AFTER. Use an acid-based lotion like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000TTPZQ6/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 or http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002D48QRK/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The basic idea here is that through chemical exfoliation they'll smooth the red bumps and give you a very smooth look.

This is my skincare routine and I don't get any of those ingrown hairs or razor bumps. I used too, though. That's why I do this.

Shaving is probably the worst way to remove genital hair FYI. Waxing is much healthier but it's best to have a professional do it, which can be kind of expensive.

Some of the people I know who are big into being hairless swear by this stuff: https://www.amazon.com/Magic-Shave-Shaving-Powder-Gold-5/dp/B00HDONBX4/ It's a bit like Nair lite, but it comes as a powder and you mix it up yourself. Just be careful and don't leave it on too long, because it can burn your skin.

I'm going to second the poster who suggests that you try out anything you are considering asking her to do before you ask her to do it. This has the added benefit of you being able to troubleshoot for her, so you can back up your request with helpfulness.

I have extremely sensitive skin and eczema. Shaving irritation has always been a problem for me. Here's what's worked for me:

-Only shave in the shower or immediately after a warm shower. The heat and moister open up your pores, the soap cleans your whiskers and skin making it easier for the razor to cut hair.

-If you have to shave without a shower wrap your face in a wet hot towel for several minutes first

-Only use a very sharp razor. Modern multi-blade razors dull very quickly (like after 3-4 uses). To combat this, cut a piece of fabric from some old jeans. Before each shave, run your razor backwards over the fabric several times. This will hone and sharpen the blade and make your blades last substantially longer.

-Use a shave cream rather than a gel or foam. I use Neutrogena skin clearing shave cream. It works really well. There are a lot of good shave creams out there, though. Find one you like. You don't need to apply a lot, but you may need to reapply if you're doing multiple passes over the same spot.

-Always shave with the grain of your hair. Going against the grain is what causes irritation. You are literally pulling your hair follicles out of your skin when you shave against the grain. For my neck, up to an a few inches below my jaw line, I shave up. For the rest of my face I shave down. Your hair may differ.

-Be slow, smooth and gentle when shaving. Don't rush. Don't apply a lot of pressure. It may take you several passes to get a close shave, but it will be far less irritating to your skin. Always make sure you have enough shave cream on your skin for each pass.

-After you finish shaving, use a non-irritating after shave lotion/balm. I use Nivea mild after shave balm. There are lots of good ones out there, so find one you like. Stay away from aftershaves that have a lot of alcohol in them. They'll dry out your skin and cause further irritation.

Anyway, this is what has worked for me to stop shaving irritation. It takes a little longer to shave this way, but it's worth it to not have razor burn. I hope it helps you.

I bought last week a good quality heavy DE razor (Amazon Link), Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving cream (Link), 50 Astra Platinum blades, 50 Gillette Platinum blades, a 6-7$ shaving brush and a nice wooden shaving bowl.

Im at my fourth shave and I still didn't cut myself. You just need to prep-work your skin with a hot towel or a shower. I don't know about the shaving cream since I'm a beginner but I watched a lot of tutorial on YouTube to build a good lather. My first lather was shitty, but my second was already better.

One double edge blade is 10 cents. If you change your blade every two shaves, it will cost you approx. 10$ in blades for an entire year.

I don't know why I waited so long before making the switch.

u/SpongegirlCS · 11 pointsr/tifu

Your mistake was the scrubbing. A microfiber cloth to gently slough it off works well. You got to be careful not to get it in between past the labia area where there is no hair. It's also best to use the sensitive formula or the one with aloe or baby oil to but a barrier between skin and hair. Most important, don't pee right before doing any of this. I found urine and Nair burns you no matter how much you rinse off beforehand.

Another thing you can do if you get a chemical burn like this no matter what percautions you took, is use aloe vera gel after and you'll be healed by the next day.

A gentler option is [Magic Shave](SoftSheen-Carson Magic Razorless Cream Shave - Regular Strength for Normal Beards, 6 oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZXBI0XU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_eoH7AbXP9D57E) for men. It's takes four minutes, you have to keep splashing water on it to keep it wet, which I think prevents burn, and only takes four minutes.

Edit: your story had me laughing my ass off, btw. I've been there. :)

u/Beckergill · 7 pointsr/WitchesVsPatriarchy

Just to add my two cents. I scrub first. My skin gets irritated if I scrub again right after shaving.

Also, exfoliating gloves or towels are AMAZING! Better than a loofah because they're easier to clean and dry, so bacteria doesn't build up on them. And as opposed to some body scrubs, they won't clog your drain. I use them with face wash when scrubbing my back/shoulders and a moisturizing/milky body wash on my legs/rest of my body. Also, with the towels, you can get different strengths. So I have a medium strength one and a hardcore one. The hardcore one is great to use on my legs before I shave. You'll get a way better shave from properly exfoliating before you shave.

This is what I'm talking about if you haven't heard of them: exfoliating gloves and exfoliating towel

Also, I never really liked shave gel, but this Cremo Cream shaving cream changed my life. It is so freaking good

u/soon2Bintoxicated · 6 pointsr/funny

When I got burned like this a few times as a kid, my mom would put regular old barbasol shaving cream on it for immediate temporary relief. It was a life saver.

I buy fragrance free products by and large. Here are those I use:

u/IllIII · 4 pointsr/wicked_edge

Ok, money, time, and convenience, the bodywash will work. It won't give you the ultimate experience that's possible, but in a utilitarian sort of way, it will work. Make sure to turn off the water, and spend a little time to build up a lather.

Going the extra steps isn't much more effort or cost. It also allows a closer shave, smoother and tighter skin, if you decide to do the complete process. I used to be ok with a disposable razor using hair conditioner during my shower shave, because it wasn't much different result than a sink shave, with my disposable razor, and aerosol shave soap. I've now been wet shaving for 10+years, and occasionally try a disposable razor. I can get a pretty close shave but my face feels raw. The shave that isn't so close I can live with, but I can't stand the scrapped up feel of my skin.

For the best shave, you should wash your skin first, then build a lather. That means clean up with the bodywash isn't really a wasted step, if you decide to go with shave soap. The wash process also gives your skin sort of a rub down which benefits the shave process.

Stay away from aerosol shave soap. The brush and puck of shave soap will be the least expensive, but I get it not wanting to deal with that in the shower. Shave creams come in a tube like toothpaste, make a fine lather without a brush, for probably $10-$15. I find those easiest to use in the shower. There are creams that come in a tub with a screw on lid. Those can also be used without a brush. Heck, even a puck of shave soap can be rubbed on your legs, and then build a lather with just your hands, without a brush. Just make sure to turn off the shower water as you build your lather. The splashing water makes it hard to build a lather. Hard puck of soap would need to be stored in container though, otherwise it will melt away in the shower faster than you wish.

The most difficult part of choosing a shave cream, is probably to find a nice scent. I have lots of favorite creams and soaps, but my scent preference will be different than yours. Learning that you're female, sort of makes me out of touch what you might like. Truefitt and Hill along with Taylor of Old Bond Street both make good shave cream, in lots of different scents. You might like the rose scent, but it might remind you of granny instead. I haven't tried their lavender, but that might be a good scent. Taylor of Old Bond Street also makes a nice lather. You might like the almond or avocado scents. They also have a lavender, a peppermint, a grapefruit, and a coconut that I have not tried.

u/Kravego · 4 pointsr/AirForce

Dude. Wet shave.

  • Get yourself a safety razor. Merkur is the brand that everyone recommends and honestly I have nothing but good things to say about them. $40

  • Next, get some blades. Feather is the sharpest fucking blade on the planet. I'll probably get gripes about telling you to get this one first, because you can really do some damage with these. But they're really the best damn blades on the market. Cuts through a 2-week leave beard like fucking butter. This pack is ~$25 and will last you a year or more.

  • Last, get yourself some product to put on your face:

  • Cream from C.O. Bigelow. Eucalyptus feels nice as fuck.

  • Aftershave. I don't know if the caffeine effect is legit or just placebo, but I feel like I wake up better with it.

  • Alum Block The purpose of the alum block is to close pores and stop small cuts from bleeding. Stings like a bitch at times but works.

All of this costs you $85 in total upfront, but you'll only need to buy shaving cream and aftershave from then on out. The blades will last you a year and the razor a lifetime. I don't know how long it takes to run out of alum in that block, but I've been using the same one for 5 years and I can't see a difference in size.

You should try some Cella. It smells amazing and the lather is superb.

Travel size CO Bigelow Shaving Cream (The same as Proraso cream) - $5

Tweezerman badger hair shaving brush - $13

Concord DE Razor - $10

100 Derby Blades - $8

I don't know if the Concord razor is good, but the price fits. The tweezerman brush is a great entry level brush.

They are pretty cheap on Amazon.com, only $3.39/bottle!

u/CanadaEh97 · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

Here is the back of the can. It's going to have a bunch of propellants to get it out of the can. Comparing to Barbasol it looks like a similar list of things.

u/matt1981 · 2 pointsr/spain

tadaa - not as cheap as in Spain though

u/dpjp · 2 pointsr/japanlife

It's nontraditional, but Cremo Cream gives a fantastic shave. Ordering from Amazon US, you can get 3 tubes for $32 delivered, which will last ages.

My go to is the Body Shop's Maca Root shaving cream (seemingly out of stock nationwide at the moment). But I grab Cremo when I'm in a hurry or just can't be bothered with the usual ritual, and get consistently close and gentle results. Really convenient for traveling, too.

Prep is so important. Make sure your skin is as ready as it can be before shaving..A hot shower, or a hot washcloth or towel wrapped on your face for a few minutes. Rub a little conditioner on your face as well during a shower or hot towel soak. Get your skin soft and those pours wide open! What kind of shaving cream do you use? If it's foam in a can or anything Gillette wonder color in a can, throw it away immediately! An easy alternative that makes a world of difference grab yourself a bottle of Kiss my face shaving cream. It will help improve the smoothness of a shave. If you wanna do one even better, grab yourself a bore shaving brush, a shaving bowl and some C.O. Bigelow shaving cream and learn how to lather it up properly and apply it with the brush. Using a brush will help stand the hairs up better so you can get a closer shave...Next, sign up for Dollar shave club and get their middle of the road package. They'll send you more blade then you'll need..I had to cancel my account for the time being because I have stacks of extra blade cases I haven't gotten to yet. You'll save a TON of money and their blades work great. Which leads me into my next tip. Maintain your blades! After every use make sure you rinse all the gunk out from between the blades and then dry it as good as you possibly can!..Most people just give it a quick rinse and toss it back on the counter or wherever while it's still wet..If you dry your blades and don't leave them face down on anything, they'll last much longer...And lastly, when you do all that and actually start to shave after all the prep. Always shave with the grain for the first pass then shave parallel then shave against the grain. Remember to keep your blade rinsed during the process and don't be afraid to lather on a bit more shaving cream, even if its after every couple of strokes..Keep your skin moist and lubricated..Take your time and try to make every pass count. The fewer passes you make the better. Some people will suggest an Alum block to use post shave, but with so many open wounds on your face, I'd hold back on those for now. Not only will it sting like hell for you, it could aggravate any conditions. Only grab one and use as a preventative once your face has cleared up as well as possible...

Also, it would behoove you to learn about Oil cleansing method. My tips may not suit everyone, but as someone who's face use to look like yours and had trouble shaving for so many years. So applying my tips if you haven't tried them already could provide similarly positive results like I had...Good luck!

I'm not familiar with the brand. I love the Tweezerman, but I imagine a brush at half the price would be to low quality for me. If you're new you'll find out that quality products can often make a huge difference. For me, I think a decent razor (I prefer my Merkur 1904) and a nice cream make all the difference (I prefer Taylor of Old Bond Street and Geo F. Trumper). I've always thought that a expensive brush couldn't make my shave much better than an expensive cream and razor would. However, some basic degree of quality is desired in a brush.

Personally I'd go with Cremo Cream (sometimes found at Walgreens). You also might want to try a two-pass shave, shaving first with the grain of the hair (e.g. downward on the legs), relathering then going across or against the grain. HERE is a video that might help (oriented to shaving the face but the concepts are the same no matter where you're shaving).

This is barely under $20 before shipping...but is Just over $30 after shipping. I suspect shopping around for better vendors will provide better results.

This was similar to the kit I started out with. Same blades (not the sharpest, but are plenty forgiving), same Creme, better brush than the Van Der Hagen I started with. Not sure about the razor, but a solid cap razor tends to be better than a bomb-door razor at this price point, that's why I went with that option.

They also make rose shaving cream and I can confirm that it both smells like rose and works very well.

u/redditusernamme · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

A very silly question: Does this have a bigger capacity then this?

The reason I ask is that the second one is more expensive than the first one.

u/ledansk · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

I had the same reaction to Maggard's Barbershop. The few soaps that didn't give me any irritation include Proraso Sensitive (the white one), Sterling's Sandlewood, and TOBS Avocado. Maybe one of these may work just as well for you as they have for me, but it seems like everyone reacts differently to each individual scent and/or brand of soap if there is any sensitivity issues. Best of luck hunting down what works best for you.

u/Cadinsor · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

You can still find the dish and soap on Amazon for $44 or so, get it now!

100% this, I got tired of it taking so long but still enjoyed the better feel of higher quality shave cream than fucking Barbsol. So I opted for the canned Proraso Shave Cream.

u/simiangeek · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

Okay, just IMHO, but...

> using conditioner as shave cream lately

No. Stop now. Get a real shaving cream. Something for sensitive skin, like Proraso Blue.

>since my girlfriend also uses that razor on her legs, and I don't know how many times it's been used by the time I get to it again.

Congratulations, you made my nervous eye tic come back.

Razors are cheap. Get your own, and your own set of blades. Think of razors like toothbrushes--would you honestly let her (or would she even want to) share a toothbrush on a daily basis?

At this point, I'm going to defer to the W_E community, especially those with sensitive skin. You may want to ask their daily regimen for shaving, as it will give you a great idea as to where to start for keeping the bald beautiful.

u/Joey_Bellows · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

What is you max budget?

Here is my recommendation for your kit(trying to keep with a budget):

Blade sampler $23

Edwin Jagger DE89 $30, it's the one I have and I love it.

This Omega Brush for $13, I have a similar Omega boar brush and love it. You have to soak it in hot tap water for about 5-10 minutes before you lather up to soften it up so it can absorb water.

For soap you could also consider C.O. Bigelow w/ menthol and eucalyptus $10, just got this at bath and body works for $5 in store (if you live near a store) and shaved with it today, it was fantastic, had a nice cooling effect to it and had a good protective lather. Taylor of Old Bond street is good as well, i have the sandalwood one(the hard soap) and it is fantastic. You have to consider they have hard soap, cream and sticks as well so you could look at those as well.

And as far as lathering you can lather in a bowl/mug or straight to the face, i like the face method thats just a personal bias though.

u/ItchyPooter · 1 pointr/Wetshaving

If you're in the US, and so long as you buy enough stuff to justify shipping/get free shipping, take advantage of the strong dollar:

http://connaughtshaving.com/atk13.html

That's less than 20 USD, before shipping. And go ahead and spring for the terracotta bowl, you'll thank yourself.

Otherwise, I usually encourage to buy from our small biz vendors, but the best deal going on I Coloniali on this side of the Atlantic is Amazon Prime.

Safety Razor

Blades for Razor

Sorry that was so difficult!

u/ak74guy · 1 pointr/AskDocs

I have sensitive skin on my face personally, I found a type of razor that actually helps to reduce the irritation. Safety razors (yeah I know kind of old school) But when using them it helps to reduce irritation significantly (at least in my experience) I personally use a Merkur safety razor. You can also get womens safety razors but for whatever reason they cost more. On top of that I use a boar hair brush, but some people prefer badger hair brushes as they are softer and are easier to use on softer soaps. Then go onto r/wicked_edge as they have tutorials on how to use the type of razors. You can also look for shaving soaps that contain aloe or things to soothe the skin during shaving. So look at the links and determine what would be best, you can also look further for other types of soaps, blades, and the razor itself. You will also need some sort of bowl to keep the shaving cream. You will and a stand to keep the soap from ruining the knot inside of the brush itself. This type of set up made it so I don't get ingrown hairs or irritation.

I'm not sure if the original link will always automatically select Smallflower as the seller. If it doesn't this longer link should hopefully show the deal:

I recently visited Merz Apothecary while in Chicago and picked up, among other items, Tabac Original and Proraso Vitamin E and Aloe. I like each quite well thus far, especially the Tabac--I can see why so many swear by it.

I'm a 21 yo male and it doesn't seem like anything is helping with preventing acne. I always seem to have one or two pimples on my face and then when I break out it is more than that. It's frustrating because even though I lance them when they come to a head and dab some witch hazel on them they still stay super red for like a week or so. I don't pick at them until they are fully at a head, then I use a lance. I'm PIH prone and I have been using ambi fade cream/glycolic acid for 6 months. Its helped some but the new spots take like a month or more to fully fade. Doesn't seem like it matters what I do or use, nothing prevents me from getting pimples. I also have been using stridex for a month now and I still get pimples like before. The spots just seem to stay inflamed or irritated for a really long time, they just stay red. Also, I'm a college student so I can't really afford the $50/oz "cures-everything" cleansers I sometimes see on here.

ALSO: I obviously have to shave, and I use Cremo Cream, maybe its my shaving cream?

Any suggestions? This is kind of my last hail mary

This is what my skin looks like this morning

Morning Routine: kirks coco castile soap, stridex, ambi cream, spf100

Nightly routine: kirks coco castile soap, nip/fab glycolic night pad (5%), ambi, cerave lotion

Spot treatments (i just received the cosrx patches yesterday) : bye bye blemish sulfur drying lotion, cosrx hydrocolloid pads
