Normally they have a sound recordist in the passenger or rear seats managing the sound. Whenever you see a shot where it's just a driver in the car, it's a completely different take to the one where they're actually talking.

I'm not certain of their exact mic setup, but I'd imagine the recordist is holding a shotgun microphone on a pistol grip. That way there's a lot of isolation between car and microphone to soak up vibrations from the engine, road, etc.

Something like a Rycote 033702 combined with an ME-66 would be a good pairing. I've used an ME-66 for car interiors in taxi cabs in a very similar way and the results were good.

If you're on a budget though, you could get away with a VideoMic or VideoMic Pro attached to an extension handle.

It would be a very good idea to avoid running into a camera - there are so many different noises that can occur in a car that you need to be monitoring the sound at all times and you'll need to frequently adjust gain depending on how high the revs are, how loud the driver is speaking, what type of road you're on, etc. Grab an XLR recorder like a Tascam DR-40 (if you go for the videomic setup you'll also need a Rode VXLR adapter to attach the microphone).

The other way to mic a car which I'm not so certain they're doing is to hang lavs from the roof, but given that they tend to cover the car interiors with wide angle lenses I would have expected to have seen a microphone or two by now.

Everything u/LeviathanUltima is spot on with my experience. The only issue I had with the mic was that it would pick up noise from my ceiling fan. I was able to resolve this by getting a cheap foam mic filter for the mic: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0718THT3F/

I did have to zip tie the filter on but it works just fine and no more complaints from my buddies on Discord.

I'll try this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0718THT3F/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_XJdDzbGYD0PKV
(Thought about getting them in white and drawing in irises... but I think I might freak myself out while walking to the bathroom at 4am)

The Behringer that /u/BangsNaughtyBits recommends below is spot-on. I just picked up the 4-mic version recently and it’s really good. Grab those mics he recommended, too. Throw in some foam windscreens, some shock mounts, and some boom arms and youre good to go.

youre looking at around $170 all-in on gear for 2 speakers.

u/tdoublem · 3 pointsr/Filmmakers

Not sure how much you're looking to spend, but this is the one I would recommend. Really good build quality and works like a charm.

u/transmutethepooch · 2 pointsr/podcasting

I had to google the mic...what a weird mount solution!

Here's what I did with my Samson Meteor which is smaller and side-address so not a lot of torque on the setup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzzT5fFzMS8

Attach the handle to the mic, the shock mount to a boom arm, and thread the handle into the rubberbands. Kinda backwards from what the thing is designed for. I can't remember if it comes with extra rubber bands, but doubling up might help hold the weight of your mic when it's horizontal.

Here's an Amazon link. Hopefully you can get it in the UK.

You can use something like this:

I have it, and I have a mic similar to yours. It fits. If you're going true handheld, then you can get a grip for it too like this combo package:

I'm kind of on a bender where I think the mic pre is everything, moreso than the mic. I read a review of the 1-channel ISA @ $500. new where a broadcast guy said that was the centerpiece of "his sound." I do not own any ISA or really have an agenda for one, but for a broadcast 1-mic rig, it seems like a useful item.

Your view of the interface is based in the rock-solid utility (I agree), but as far as determinants of what makes the sound, I think an ala carte mic pre can sort of fatten things up and make a "pro edge" if the OP wants to take it that far. Maybe do a RME for starters, but for a Step 2, consider an ala carte mic pre add-on. Of course the RME mic pre will be quite good, but to "fatten up" the sound?

disclaimer: I've never used an ISA, only read about them. But I think if you take a couple of differing mics and run them through different pre's, the sound of the pre is what becomes dominant moreso than the mic, at least when comparing pre's.

Something like a VIVO Black Height?

Yellowtec sells something similar as well.

Blue Snowball for $50. Just plug and play. May have to adjust mic volume. Really sensitive mic. It will pick up almost everything in the background. Currently have one and I love it. I suggest getting a pop filter. I saw one on Amazon for $10 that is a full mic cover.

Buy a few of these and keep them with your gigging gear. Band-aid fix to be sure, but it's not your job to fix the venue's shitty gear and personally I would just want to get on with my show instead of wasting time in soundcheck chasing ground issues (which is something the venue should sort out on it's own time if you ask me).

kk. So assuming you were using the built in mic that would be cause for the wind. Sadly tho there is almost nothing you can do to remove the wind in post. I did find a link to a video about connecting an external mic to the Osmo though.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8lGQ_-cknQ

If the videos are just you talking whilst showing off a home then a simple lav mic would be a good investment. They can be had for cheap on amazon. But make sure to get one with a "dead cat", or buy one separately. All will come with the standard black foam mic cover, which is fine for indoors but useless once outdoors. Hence needing one with a dead cat. They will eliminate most, if not all wind noise (depending on the weather conditions) and this will help for any future videos you make. But sadly once you have wind noise in the audio track it's almost impossible to remove. Hope this helps =)

I have an iRig Mic HD2 that I like pretty well, BUT using a typical $5 double mesh screen pop filter is NOT cutting it. I have tried adjusting gain and standing farther away from mic — no luck.

So I’m looking to upgrade. Recommendations? I’ve been considering a) one of those big foam over-mic windscreens and/or b) this double-layer metal mesh windscreen. Thoughts/opinions/advice?
Thanks!

u/InternMan · 1 pointr/audioengineering

Definitely get the accessory pack but the foam windscreen is generally only good for light breeze. This fuzzy one seems to have good reviews and would be worth the $10. There is a reason that all the guys who do sound on movie sets use the big fuzzy covers, they work really well at reducing wind noise.

I was there on the rail near the bar. What a fantastic night but it is always a great night when Phil is playing. Graham and Ross' guitar playing has really improved over the years. There was also great interplay between both of them and Jason. Elliot and Alex's vocals were on point considering that is usually a weak point at Phil shows.

Mr. Charlie was awesome and it is always a treat to hear Unbroken Chain!

If you want to continue recording and you have an iPhone, you can buy a mic so you can record in stereo and get a little better sound quality. I use one similar to this:

https://www.amazon.com/Zoom-iQ6-Microphone-Movo-Windscreen/dp/B07DP6LQQ9/ref=sr_1_6?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1543620137&sr=1-6&keywords=zoom+iphone+mic

u/doc1429 · 1 pointr/SmallYTChannel

I'm guessing there would be a slight difference between brands, but you are not recording ASMR so it shouldn't matter too much. And believe pop filters also filter background noise as well as pops. But still try one to see whether it works.
Here's one I found specifically for your microphone:

The 286s can drive the RE-20, but I had to push the gain up a lot higher than I'd like, not giving me the sort of wiggle room I'd prefer to have. Since the CL-1 does come out super clean, I've been really happy with the results.

I've been toying with the idea of switching to a Focusrite ISA One (super clean, very neutral, drives the RE-20 just fine), but that would set off an upgrade chain I'm just not ready to think about yet. Besides, I do like the color the 286s adds at the moment, so I'm in no rush.

I'm just getting into streaming, but I really want to get into it seriously. (Of course I'll still have a job in the meantime, but I plan on streaming at least every day for a few hours)

I am aiming for 1080p/60fps, and eventually 4k when twitch finally upgrades.

As far as the shockmount, i have a bulldog who likes to get my attention by rubbing up against my table... I dont know if that will mess up my audio lol.

Now for pop filters, should I just get something like:

Hmm. It just boggles my mind that I see my friend with a similar room and people on YT just stand it up and speak into it and it sounds so much better (also on USB, and unfortunately standard Yeti doesn't have XLR input)

Arm

[Shock Mount]

And Mudder

Or apparently just rebuy these and don't be depressed about a mic for a year and a half

u/SureIllrecordthat · 1 pointr/microphones

Yes it should be, but you may need a super cheap adapter. The mic clip on the boom arm should have a small adapter that changes the threads on the boom arm to the threads on the mic clip. If, for some weird reason that adapter is not included, these are what you're looking for

But, most likely the mic clip that comes with the arm should have that adapter screwed into it.

You will need to take the corresponding part from the mic -- that ring looking part on the table stand on the mic package -- and remove the mic clip from the boom arm and replace it with the ring looking part. You will not use the mic clip that comes with the boom arm.

EDITED TO ADD: If you spent a few dollars more and went with the NEEWER NB-35, that will have a universal shock mount that should readily accept your mic, and will help insulate noise from when you touch the desk. I bet it would work better overall.

Here are the two I have been on my list..
Fireball V

and I was planning on using something like this for my stand/setup
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GRMF4RS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_img?_encoding=UTF8&colid=4X0W3N82IN84&coliid=I2O02S71Z0VZRO

not that all that really matters in terms of my question if the Fireball V is fine to get, but yeah just putting all the cards on the table I guess

u/wolf39us · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I'm using a speaker setup AND headphones just like you

u/iGumball · 1 pointr/letsplay

Pop filters =/= wind screen.

I'd recommend that. You can get a pretty decent/average one here

Note: Windscreens are the coverings that go all the way around your mic to remove consistent static noise, if the dB level is low enough to do so. Turning down your gain will also help the screen absorb some of that sound.

u/relwow · 1 pointr/Twitch

I use an AT2020, with this boom arm and this windscreen - get them all for under €200 for sure :)

u/Osirez · 1 pointr/Twitch

You should be fine with any of those choices really. I would personally lean towards the AT2035 mic tho. I also prefer mixers over audio interfaces because in my experience at least, audio interfaces have more problems with Windows.

With that being said, the best way to fix background noise I've found is to use an audio chain that OBS-Studio already has built in. See picture below. Then get a mic windscreen on whatever mic you get. It works wonders for fan noise and the such.

https://i.imgur.com/0pKkQui.jpg

Edit: I know I didn't put forth much details but if you need them feel free to ask. And here';s the type of windscreen I was referring to.

u/brunerww · 1 pointr/Filmmakers

Hi aevz You should use the same pro mic with balanced XLR outputs both on top of your camera and on your boom. Consumer mics with unbalanced 3.5mm outputs such as the Rode Videomic "Pro" should not be used on a boom. Running 3.5mm cable over long distances is an invitation to RF interference. For a little over $800, I recommend [Referral links]:

u/HeppyCat · 1 pointr/Rockband

Since there isn't an option to disable vocal overdrive, there are a few things you can do to prevent accidental activation.
Keep the handle of the mic pointed at the speakers. The "business" end of the mic will pick up sounds directed at it.
Use a mic stand to reduce handling noise. This is especially important with the Mad Catz mic. It does not have any sort of internal shock mount. The older Logitechs have a rubber gasket. If you're on a hard floor with people bouncing around, put the mic stand on a towel or rug.
Get a foam pop filter. They greatly reduce breath and wind noise (ceiling fans). Plus they catch spit. Think about that the next time your mic is passed around at a party.
