I was waiting for a story about phreaking.

Maybe using a recorder.

Apparently they make adaptive recorders just for this

The autos is truly lovely, (Haka wood grain) Sweet, bright sound without being so much of a shril which is so typical of plastic soprano recorders in general.

Here is a video of Lenka Molconilova playing one, she used to play the Aulos Haka plastic recorders before getting the handmade expensive recorders she plays today. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hVARLQolFk0

That's soprano, alto, tenor, but instead of a bass on the low side it has a sopranino on the high side. A good instrument to have for sure, but having a bass is way more useful if you play with others.

Btw, a bass alone is in the upper 200 dollars:

so a quartet SATB will be close to 400, not 300 like I originally guessed

Ironically, it appears to be this one, which comes to exactly $4.99 on Amazon.

Source: I have no life and literally went looking for the recorder with a round logo like on hers in the video. Yamaha seems to fit the bill.

There must be a good handful of musical instruments available for under $40. A decent recorder is $7.50. When I was a kid I bought my own after playing one in 4th grade music class.

Here's my recommendation. I know you like the quena but it's not easy to make a sound on. I would recommend buying a recorder from Yamaha first so you can learn on it. They're around $10 USD, they're easy to learn on, and the fingerings for all the notes will be very close for when you want to learn quena. That being said, to get a decent quena, you don't need to spend nearly $50! They're simple instruments, I picked one up for $20 years ago and it works fine!

That's Damon Albarn from Blur/Gorillaz, multi instrumentalist but obviously not classically trained in everything. I'm assuming the other players were studio musicians, which is why they're technique is on point!

That electric recorder is really cool, but I'm in no position to buy that. I was looking at Alto recorders on Amazon and I found some in the $20 - $40 price range I like (like this Yamaha one in F). Do you have any recommendations for a beginner alto recorder?

wait- I found colored ones

u/fenig13 · 1 pointr/doctorwho

The recorder is a cheapy plastic one, that all the school kids have to get. Pretty much like this http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002E1ERM

The paint is acrylic paint that you can get at any craft store. I used:
light blue = pacific coast (craftsmart)
dark blue = too blue (apple barrel colors)
brown = mix of 2 parts golden brown, plus 1 part goose feather (apple barrel colors)

The yarn I used is Loops & Threads (again from a craft store) the color is Forest

I’d use DSK SaxophoneZ or invest in a Venova or Xaphoon,

https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-YVS-100-Recorder/dp/B074R86GRQ

I’d prefer to learn this though, also M1 Legacy has a good saxophone in it.

I am guessing you had a soprano recorder. Get yourself an alto (a good beginner: (https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-Baroque-Fingering-Recorder-ECODEAR/dp/B01IRRI0I6). The American Recorder Society is a good resource and may have a chapter near you. The recorder’s repertoire spans centuries.

To me it looks like something you attach a rag to the end of, and use to clean the inside of a tube or woodwind instrument. Kind of like this plastic one for a recorder...https://www.amazon.com/Ravel-PR19CGN-Transparent-Recorder-Cleaning/dp/B004S287VK but with the spiral it would be for an instrument or pipe that had that diameter.

That's my guess

Though it is a little bit different. It has more holes for semitones than the one from your picture

Cajon (percussion)

Melodica

Ocarina

Kalimba

Beginner violin

Tin Whistle

Recorder

A lot of these may seem simple to play (or not "real" instruments), but proficiency in even these type of instruments is good. And as someone has already said, buying used opens up more possibilities.

I've given this a gift a few times when I want to torment a friend >:P

https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-YRS-23Y-Soprano-Recorder-Natural/dp/B0014ZG676/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1537468750&sr=8-2&keywords=plastic+recorder

It's indestructible, no batteries are required, and the horrible noise it makes can be heard through walls. There's practically no way a kid can actually produce a pleasing sound on this device.

u/throwawaylogin2099 · 1 pointr/pics

Nope. My sister vowed to murder me if I ever got one of these for my niece.
