I'm up-voting this in the hope that other people post things that I will want to get for myself.

My one idea for a gift would be some vegan mac & cheese.

Is that the volcano chicken one? I like that one. I tried it because I was standing in the ramen aisle in my H-Mart debating on what to buy and a family walked into the aisle. They were looking specifically for that one, and I figured if they were looking for a specific one, it must be decent.

EDIT: I looked it up. The one I had was from Paldo, not Samyang. Is the Samyang one hotter?

I'd recommend you make a meal plan for the month with a series of planned short shopping lists. I'd also think you would want some nice air tight storage for dry goods. My suggestions are based on you being able to boil water. Shopping lists would involve foods that might go moldy if not rancid.

Carbs: Bean thread noodles, Quinoa, oven-ready lasagna, quick cook oats, wheat berry, those quick cook bags of pasta or noodles

Veg: Dehydrated refried beans, dried onion, Dried mushroom (I find them at the local asian grocery), canned tomato, canned green beans, canned beans, dry lentils

Other: Pasta sauce, hard cheese, nuts, Powder bouillon, powdered milk, oil, honey, peanut butter, maybe a can or two of spam or other tinned animal

Short shopping lists would include: Small amounts of bread rolls or tortillas, colorful veg, fruit, small amounts of fresh fish or meat, occasionally soft cheese.

Bean thread noodles just need to sit in boiled water to hydrate. Add some bouillon, a splash of oil and dehydrated veg and you have a pretty good soup. Add in a can of veg and it's starting to get more substantial. Add tinned turkey breast and you have a pretty hearty meal.

Quinoa cooks stupidly fast. It's something like 15 minutes. If you eat lots of red meat I would cook the quinoa during the time the meat is resting. Throw in a can on tomatoes and green beans with some salt and pepper. bam. If you're making fish set the fish right on top or the quinoa to steam. But quinoa is a complete protein on it's own so you can just make it it's own thing, add more fluid to the pot and cut in some fresh veg. Make a little stew.

If you rehydrate oven ready lasagna noodles in boiling water you can you can make little lasagna roll ups. fill it with soft cheese and softened fresh veg. Put it all in the pot and let it warm through. (this would work better with a campfire and in a dutch oven but idk who knows what you'll have access to.)

Quick oats plus powdered milk and some honey and nuts are like... what my childhood tasted like. Granted I was a weird kid and was a huge fan of instant oats + cold water = tasty chewy mess.

If you can soak wheat berries until they're soft the cook time is pretty quick. You could even like, soak them in the car for a few hours, drain them but leave them out so they can sprout a little and then cook them. You will have accidentally gained cred with a certain type of wholesome food nut. You know lentils, mungbeans and soy are other things that you can soak for a quick cook time, and taste pretty alright even after sprouting.

And of course if you're having a hard time with your cooker situation there's always good ole (whatever) in a tortilla/bread roll. I like the dehydrated refried beans because you can mix up as much as you want. You could use em as a scooping tool if you cook beans/lentils/whatever.

I found it on amazon, apparently it's used in Chinese and Indian food and in New Guinea. I'm in America, so I don't know what your ethnic markets look like there in Australia. But an Indian or Chinese grocery store would be my first place to look. I also don't know how much it would cost fo order on Amazon, but there it is! Good luck and let me know how the dish turns out!!

u/bartmansheadphones · 5 pointsr/Ultralight

Shin Ramyun - pretty standard for my korean/koreanized buddies. You can actually cook this in the mylar bag it comes in if you have a cloth to take some of the heat

Shin Ramyun Black - A danker version of Shin Ramyun. Can also cook in the bag it comes in.

Chapagetti - Second most popular amongst my Korean friends. This is actually a good replacement for Yakisoba as it's not so soupy. If I do recall, you can cook these in the bag they come in as well.

Cheese Ramen - personal favorite at the moment.

Tonkatsu Flavored Ichiban Ramen - my go to at home when my wife and I are too lazy to cook something. Don't cook this one in the bag tho.

Also - for me, the Chinese instant noodles are always the dankest, but I only go to the Chinese supermarket when I visit my bro in law so don't end up buying them for trips... here's a popular chinese market that you can buy instant noodles from online. I haven't gone wrong with any of the chinese instant noodles yet.

Also - to supe up my instant noodles, I always toss in some pork floss or spam, egg crystals and a dried vegetables or dried seaweed. If it's a short trip, I always bring a few cloves of garlic for them as well. I've also tossed some sesame oil (excellent calorie profile) into a bigger eye dropper that i'll toss into the noodles to get more fat to burn.

I kinda agree with Quetzalcoa.. I can't get myself to try eat ramen bomb or non asian instant noodles knowing I grew up preparing these guys a different way.

u/applesforadam · 5 pointsr/Frugal

If you really wanted to be frugal and give yourself a bit of an ascetic test you could buy a large bag of rice and a multivitamin. You would be fine for the month, and just think how good that first real meal would be when the month is over. Plus, you'd save a lot of that card for other things. If you wanted to make it less harsh, you could buy a few splurge foods like:

Spaghetti-O's (you could actually just buy these and be fine for the month too, 5 cans a day = $5 x 30 days = $150)

Mountain House dehydrated meals

Mac and Cheese

Any number of other things, really. The rice is an absolute frugal grocery staple. Beyond that, go to Amazon and search the listings under Grocery>Packaged Meals & Side Dishes. Just don't forget a multivitamin.

3.25lbs of mashed potatoes :D

u/elitedisplayE · 5 pointsr/glutenfree

try making your own indian and latin dishes. The ingredients are relatively cheap for the quantity (lentils, chickpeas, beans) and once you have the spices you're set. Also consider different starches - potatoes, sweet potatoes, GF oats, quinoa, cassava.

also, maybe these are celiac friendly https://www.amazon.com/Annies-Gluten-Cheddar-Macaroni-Cheese/dp/B000CQ01NS/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=annie%27s%2Bmac%2Band%2Bcheese%2Bgluten&qid=1565794374&s=gateway&sr=8-3&th=1

My favorite from that article -- even beyond the idiocy of the $X,000 shoes (how insanely absurd can you get?) is the seemingly trivial...

>>1. “I spend my money on $20 mac and cheese from a restaurant literally across the street from my apartment. Some days you just need what you need and that thing that you need is gourmet mac and cheese brought to your door from half a block away.” —Nik, 23

It's just who the FUCK -- in their right mind or even NOT in their right mind -- actually pays $20 for "Mac & Cheese"?

--
I mean we're talking what about 50 cents worth of actual food value; and moreover something that can be stored on the shelf (almost indefinitely) & can be microwaved faster & with less effort than ordering & waiting for it to be delivered (even if it IS "across the street") -- just how fucking lazy/incompetent/idiotic can you possibly BE to pay $20 for that???

--
Also, it's "Macaroni & Cheese" -- I don't give a shit what anyone claims -- there simply is NO SUCH THING as "Gourmet" Mac & Cheese.

u/jarijasm · 3 pointsr/ramen

I made a trip to my local asian supermarket and picked up a few different kinds of instant ramen to try. I was looking for this one to try as well, but they didn't have any at this particular supermarket. I have another asian supermarket nearby that has a bigger variety of instant ramen and I plan on going there in the next few weeks. I would love to try other brands not pictured here, so let me know your favorite instant ramen that you think I should try. If possible link some pictures so I know what to look for at the store. The ramen pictured here are:

Mama Tom Yum

indomie

samyang spicy chicken

samyang 2x spicy I tried this one and it is way too spicy for me, the flavor was delicious though

saporo ichiban miso this is one of my favorite instant ramen, I buy it all the time, it's so good

shin ramyun spicy This is my favorite instant ramen. This was the first instant ramen I tried that wasn't maruchan and I fell in love. This led me to try other brands from the asian store that I wouldn't normally have tried.

*edit: i just tried the indomie and wow, it was delicious, so flavorful, definitely getting some more of those

I don't eat gluten. Potatoes, oats, buckwheat, rice, quinoa, beans/lentils, nuts/seeds, fruit, vegetables. I eat a lot of cereals and muesli, just make sure the base is either corn, rice, oats, buckwheat, sorghum, etc.

These pastas are great, too, if you're looking for a gluten free pasta. There are a ton of rice/quinoa pastas, but I really like these bean pastas for the protein content.

> I'm in the US now so I have no idea what's trendy but my mom has mentioned that Kko Kko Myeon (double entendre because it's the onomatopoeia for chickens and it can mean al dente) has been popular recently.

Not Korean but I shop in a number of Korean markets. I've recently been seeing a lot of variations on spicy chicken cheese, like these:

u/rguy84 · 3 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

I did rice with veggies, and sometimes a chicken for better part of a year. I stopped because my then-girlfriend would want detailed information about dinner. When I would say rice and veggies, she would chastise me. Been 3 years, cannot bring myself to make rice, more than one or two times a month. I sadly use Knorr rice sides instead, not bashing the Knorr product.

Unfortunately, Maruchan's oriental flavor has beef in it. https://www.amazon.com/Maruchan-Flavor-Ramen-Noodles-Oriental/dp/B00CEIECZ0?th=1 as does their chili flavor https://www.amazon.com/Maruchan-Ramen-Chili-3-Ounce-Packages/dp/B003OB2DSE it's near the end of the ingredients list.

u/eatbuhi · 2 pointsr/Atlanta

BuHi Farmer's Market probably has it, but you have to know exactly what you're looking for. They have over 100K SKUs, so employees aren't going to know every product.

Look around the shelves with tapioca pearls, corn starch & rice starch. If they have it, it's likely nearby. It won't necessarily be with the Indonesian products (it's used throughout Asia & India).

You can also get it on Amazon: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.amazon.com/Ajika-Sabudana-Tapioca-Sago-Pearls/dp/B006GK58FK&ved=0ahUKEwjsyJz7_bXVAhXTySYKHbk9ASIQFgjWATAa&usg=AFQjCNF8KsseH7oSyJeL3mLWNYeLwI0rNg

Here are some foods that you can incorporate into meals that meet your requirements:

High protein

Beyond Meat

Black bean pasta

Lentil pasta

High carb

Rice

Potatoes

Wheat bread/tortillas/buns/etc.

And of course lots of veggies

So for instance, you could do black bean or lentil pasta with steamed veggies and a marinara sauce. Or stir fry with Beyond Meat beef crumbles, veggies and rice. Or a Beyond Meat Beast Burger with a baked potato, and so on..

u/falloutnewsalem · 2 pointsr/GifRecipes

this recipe is basically a homemade version of kraft mac n cheese cups (also known as easy mac). you put the pasta in water and heat it for around 3.5 minutes on high in the microwave and somehow it's perfectly cooked every time.

u/mrs_jellyfish · 2 pointsr/spicy

Is it this one? This one is actually Thai, but the packaging, the two flavor packets, and the spiciness seem to fit your description. If this is it, it can be found here in a chicken green curry flavor or here in regular green curry flavor. These ones have one powder flavor packet and one liquid flavor packet. I'm don't think the noodles are rice noodles though. Here is a review I found for the chicken green curry one, with photos. Other reviews I've found say it is much more spicy than this one says it is.

Annie's makes a gf rice mac and cheese that's quite good. Trader Joe's also sells the same product but packaged in their house brand, and it's usually cheaper.

I just Googled it and the 'cheese sauce' is pretty much exactly what I said is in it, whey, flavorings, and artificial color.

Shin Ramyun is a solid A- at all times. Its a nice staple, good spice packet, good dried veggie packet (shiitake is always welcome). Some people will call bullshit, but I actually like Shin Ramyun black.

Mama's Tom yum flavor is awesome. just awesome. kind of tiny, but also cheap.

Same with Indomie hot and Spicy flavor.

Sapporo Ichiban is again a nice staple. I'd say solid B unless you really like one of the flavors. Wife REALLY likes the tonkutsu, but its artificially flavored, and the only one of the basic flavors that has that on the label. I don't know why.

I also enjoy the Myojo Udon you see there with a lot of scallions and white pepper added to the mix. Obey the instructions on this one: boil noodles separately from a pot of just water. use the hot water on the flavor pack (and white pepper to taste, probably a lot), drain noodles and put in stock, add scallions and whatever else. maybe do a soy egg or something. I like beef or spicy flavors on this one.

These Volcano Ramen are right up there with Samyung. The heat is a slower build, but when it hits it packs a wallop.

Looks similar but I can't read it.

Daiya mac and cheese

Pho!

These amazing caramel macaroons

The Glutino oreos are good, I just wish they didn't have palm oil!

I think I removed all of the non-prime items from my list now. http://amzn.com/B003XUJ47O should be Prime eligible though.

It definitely needed to be seasoned, and I like having more control over how well done my pasta is... I'm a fan of Roads End Shells & Chreess with tapatio. Annie's was way too sweet for me and I remember really not liking the Daiya Cheezy Mac but I don't know why... I'd love more recommendations if you've found a good boxed one!

Got tired of the conventional backpacking meals. Tried mixing things up with green curry. It's so good that it's hard to believe it's a backpacking meal:

-1 of these

-some powdered coconut milk

-dried thai chilis

-freeze dried bell peppers

-freeze dried cilantro

Dump all of it in a pot, pour over the water, bring to a boil. That simple.

Overstuffed Beef Ravioli are also the same price for 12 cans.

Damn you’re right! I’m so used to it from my childhood I didn’t realize the name had changed.

edit: just found it on amazon still as oriental

There is a cheese version out of the ramen! https://www.amazon.com/Samyang-CHEESE-SPICY-Chicken-Noodles/dp/B01M03T7SC

If that's still too spicy, add more cheese, and as many egg yolks or poached eggs as you like. The fats coat the food and your mouth and makes eating spicy food a lot more tolerable.

Says he's poor, eats EZ Mac, which costs $0.57 an ounce.

Ramen, even in the cups (as opposed to the noodle blocks in bags) is $0.18 per ounce.

This specific brand doesn't seem to be available anywhere online. But if you liked that flavor you might like Mama's Tom Yum or Mama's Spicy Tom Yum.
