I can't believe nobody has said this but Tasty Bite has a bunch of different Indian/Thai pouches that are pretty low calorie and very filling. The lentils one is my go-to but they are all pretty good of the ones I've had. I usually get a big pack at Costco. Also if you want to make it a full meal you can add rice.

As an Asian who likes spicy food, I recommend Indomie noodles. La Mian curry noodles are great as well but pretty expensive.

u/SimAlienAntFarm · 22 pointsr/forbiddensnacks

I was completely underwhelmed. Now if you want an amazing instant noodle you have to get ahold of this shit: https://www.amazon.com/Nissin-Demae-Garlic-Instant-Noodles/dp/B00CORJU5S

It’s fucking DELICIOUS

u/chevybow · 20 pointsr/college

Buy better ramen. I don't know how people can eat tons of Maruchan or Top Ramen. Get some quality shit on amazon. Its more expensive but you'll hate yourself a bit less. Here's some things to get you started with:

If you don't know Nong Shim Shin Cup then you NEED TO KNOW... There is no better. Shit'll cure a cold in 5 minutes.

u/joonjoon · 14 pointsr/iamveryculinary

I've been reading up on curry for the last hour and it's truly a fascinating tale of culinary history. It's so crazy that we have this word, that everyone thinks is a word from India that refers to their food and spice, yet is actually a western word to describe said food and spice. And somehow it spread all over the world. Then we have places like Thailand where their word for curry is one thing and we call it curry, and in neighboring Indonesia they have dishes that are literally called curry/kare.

Thanks, British empire!

BTW I absolutely agree American chili could fall under curry. I guess it depends on how you define curry though. I have a friend who claims to hate Indian food, but loves chili and this stuff: https://www.amazon.com/Tasty-Bite-Indian-Lentils-Microwaveable/dp/B0007R9L4M

She actually calls it chili and I always make it a point to remind her it's Indian food. :D

TIP: don't cook the noodles in the crock pot. Boil the noodles by themselves, drain, and then add them directly to your bowls before adding the soup. This keeps the noodles from getting soggy and is much easier to portion and serve.

Also, please don't use crappy instant noodles for this dish. You already spent so much time and money preparing good ingredients, you can surely afford to spend more than a dollar on noodles. If you can't find any fresh or frozen ramen like Sun Noodle or quality dry ramen like Hakubaku, get Nongshim brand instant noodles. They're WAY better than Top Ramen/Maruchan.

Of course, you don't have to use ramen noodles at all. This recipe isn't Japanese, so why not use lo mein or rice noodles or Chinese flat egg noodles or buckwheat noodles or bean threads. If you can't find any of those, you can always substitute spaghetti or linguine. Literally anything would be tons better than cheap instant noodles.

u/enkrypt0r · 13 pointsr/lifehacks

Here's the two mentioned at the bottom of the image:

Nong Shim Ramen

Mama Tom Yum Ramen

I can't speak to the second one, but I pretty much always have the Nong Shim noodles on hand, and I don't even like regular shitty ramen. That stuff is some of the most delicious soup I've ever had, and it easily passes as delicious homemade soup. It's got a nice bite to it and it's extremely filling. The "brick" of noodles is quite a bit larger than the standard ramen package, and there are several different packets of ingredients rather than the usual mystery powder.

Words cannot describe how delicious that Nong Shim stuff is. It has an astronomically high taste-to-difficulty ratio. In fact, I don't think I can think of anything tastier than I could prepare in less time or for less money.

Seriously, I love that stuff.

u/l9k2 · 12 pointsr/gundeals

I don't think it is a good price, shipping appears to be $10 flat. less than two years ago I was paying $2.50 shipped per meal, and that included the heater, seasonings, wipe, etc. Note however they were NOT vetted to have future inspection dates like these. Mine just had manufacture dates, and they were 2+ years old by the time I got them. I eventually ate them all though, and they were fine.

if you buy two cases here, it works out to about $5.83 per meal. too rich for my blood. they are very convenient, but for the price they are asking, you can buy the same thing on amazon for the same price ($60 + $15 shipping vs $65 + $10 shipping): https://www.amazon.com/MRE-MEALS-MILITARY-FACTORY-SEALED/dp/B00JVTPVYQ

I can wait until I have a need to make my purchase.

EDIT - $62 shipped if you have prime: https://www.amazon.com/Meals-Ready-Genuine-Military-Surplus/dp/B005I5ML36/

you are doing it wrong. that is soup.. it is supposed to be eaten with water... ;)

instead what you will love is this bad boy:

http://www.amazon.com/Indomie-Mi-Goreng-Instant-Noodle/dp/B00HXIXWKM

those are INTENDED to be server without water... and taste like motherfucking rainbows on steroids. if you want to go commando then throw the noodles in a pan and add an raw egg to stri fry it before seasoning.

in anycase these come in jumbo sizes as well and are available in most asian supermarkets...
those are from indonesian origin
prepare your world to be rocked!!

u/ZappBrannigansLaw · 10 pointsr/snackexchange

I assume they are the same. I guess I will be ordering some as well!

Nissin Instant Cup Ramen Nakiryu Tantanmen 149g (Set of 4cups) Japan Import https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C7LFG8R/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_DOorDbNJ5FR54

u/wolfpack_charlie · 10 pointsr/videos

Ooh, so the bowl kind actually comes with the toppings on the label? I've been buying the packets, which have soup base and some kimchi (I think?) flakes.

My current fave is this mi goreng There's like 5 separate sauce packets, and I love opening and combining all of them

u/spidermonkey12345 · 9 pointsr/ramen
u/itsmybootyduty · 9 pointsr/1200isplenty

So this brand I'm actually not sure of because my Japanese is super rusty and I can't read it lol! But she did buy me two packs and honestly, all of the instant tonkotsu ramen I've had has been great, no matter what the brand. As long as it has an oil packet with the seasonings and good noodles, it gets a pass from me.

Previously, I ordered this brand from Amazon and it was amazing too.

u/alehar · 9 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

It's available by the case on Amazon.

u/ThirstyOne · 9 pointsr/shittyfoodporn

They sell it on Amazon if you're the waiting type. I just happened by it at my grocery store and was impressed by the fact that it had all of nature's warning colors on the packaging. Dino nuggets and frozen beans were in the frozen food section. That's where the ice-cream lives.

u/okgum · 8 pointsr/todayilearned

Mi Goreng, Its not Japanese but its my favorite instant noodles.

u/JohnnyP51 · 8 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

There are miracle noodles https://www.amazon.com/Miracle-Noodle-Shirataki-Angel-Pasta/dp/B0055CRH1S they aren't the cheapest alternative but they are the lowest calorie

u/somethinghaha · 7 pointsr/indonesia
u/UntilTheEndOfTime_ · 7 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

If you don't use the packet anyways, you should look into various types of noodles. You might enjoy egg noodles or udon or somen. There's fresh ramen noodles as well, they're probably healthier for you. Something like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007WQCENQ/

u/snipe4fun · 6 pointsr/CAguns

I haven't clicked on the link either, but here's my thoughts:
Get a couple cases of MREs, a couple flats of bottled water. Use them on roadtrips, day hikes, etc, get a replacement case/flat when the first runs out. Maybe look into a water purifier and camping stove that can use multiple types of fuel such as MSR International.

A 5 gallon can of gasoline, or maybe a couple of them if you have need, be sure to add a stabilizer for long term storage. Use it for your lawn mower/small jobs so that it eventually gets used up and replaced.

Keep a can with a wad of 20s stashed somewhere out of the way, maybe dip into it time to time when you'd rather save a trip to an ATM and replenish it when you've had a good week.

Stock your medicine cabinet with basic first aid stuff: various sizes of band-aids, ace bandage/splint, space blanket, aspirin, ibuprofen, claritin, small scissors, water purification tablets. If you have medical needs, not sure if you'll be able to double up on your prescription. But also get a 1st aid kit, double up on your 1st aid supplies, and keep a portable version either in your car/truck glove box, or somewhere where you spend most of your time when not at home (office/work).

u/ViteKitchensTim · 6 pointsr/ramen

Alright! I'm going to list a bunch of different types, so bear with me here--

If you're looking for a more classic, almost like Top Ramen kind of tastes, I recommend these: Sapporo Ichiban

They're basically just tastier Top Ramen, in my opinon. If you want to fancy it up a bit and go a little deeper into "classic" ramen tastes, then go with this: Nissin Black Garlic Oil Tonkotsu

Speaking of Tonkotsu, do you like a richer Tonkotsu flavor? Then this is what you'll want to try! Myojo Charumera Ramen Tokotsu Shoyu

A bit too high calorie? Want something lighter, non-fried, but still has some delicious Tonkotosu flavor and a firmer chew? Then try Nissin Raoh!

It also comes in the Soy Sauce and Miso flavors, or even Shio if you're looking for that!

Japanese not your thing? Want to try some Korean Ramyun? Neoguri Spicy Seafood might be your thing!

But like some szechuan spice with some authentic ma la flavor that numbs your mouth? Why not try our JML Instant Noodle Artificial Spicy Hot Beef Flavor?
P.S. The "artifical" is a bad translation of the ma la flavor

What about some southeast asian flavors? Nothing like Mama Tom Yum flavor to brighten up your day! These are smaller packet, just something to keep in mind. They also make Shrimp creamy Tom Yum and Artifical Pa-Lo Duck Flavor if you're into that!

Speaking of which, let's get some Laksa and Penang in here! MyKuali Penang White Curry is a very delicious, but kind of shrimp funky kind of flavor, but it's definitely worth a try! The entire MyKuali line is very good!

What about something a bit more on the more luxurious side, but also has that same fermented shrimp funk? Why not Prima Taste Laksa La Mian with coconut broth?

And if we want to go into the more expensive, more authentic ramen taste, there's Ichiran instant ramen, which is expensive, but pretty close to an actual authentic bowl of Ichiran Tonkotsu Ramen!

I hope this helped, and let me know if there's anything else you'd like to try, and I can give recommendations! I also recommend going to a local asian supermarket and browsing their instant ramen section-- Amazon only carries the more popular ones, and there are truly some delicious hidden gems that you can only get in asian grocery stores!

u/Sweeeets · 6 pointsr/festivals
u/UnbandedTyping · 5 pointsr/AskUK

You can get these in most supermarkets and some smaller shops now, as a spicy Pot Noodle alternative.

u/BasherSquared · 5 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

Military MREs could suffice for your needs. Just be careful, they pack some serious calories per pack.

u/donkeyrocket · 5 pointsr/ExpectationVsReality

If you really want that Tom Yum flavor grab these. Other than "wet" yours doesn't resemble Tom Yum at all.

u/Cooey · 5 pointsr/Frugal

You can buy the official Kraft Cheese here:Link

or if your addiction becomes too expensive putting it on everything... I have started to purchase these and it isn't too much different. Link (These packets are actually to make a cheese sauce, but regardless, I sprinkle it as you would with the Kraft brand.)

u/ResRevolution · 5 pointsr/onionhate
u/CallMeDrewvy · 5 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

Honestly, instant ramen. Make this ramen broth without taking out the chicken at the end. Divide it into freezer containers that are about 24oz each and freeze. Purchase these ramen noodles (there's a lot...each bundle makes 2 bowls of ramen. 2 bowls per bundle, 3 bundles per pack, 8 packs in a box...48 bowls of noodles).

When you want fresh homemade ramen, take out one of your frozen broth containers and heat, cook the noodles, make some soft boiled eggs, maybe blanch some bitter greens (kale, bok choi), add some other protein. If you have all the ingredients available (and broth frozen), the process takes ~20 minutes from "oh I'm hungry" to "I'm eating homemade ramen."

u/Terrific_Soporific · 4 pointsr/shittyfoodporn

Oh man, I thought it was those instant noodles from the picture... They're my shit.

u/RruinerR · 4 pointsr/backpacking

Ramen packet.
MCD pancake butter or two.
Carrot.
Fresh greenbeans/sugar snap peas (lots of grocery stores have them in loose bulk. Enough for X meals)
Sriracha packet (panda Express has them. Just ask do t have to buy anything)

Can do this as a soup or drained noodles. Add water , boil with sliced carrots and beans/peas. Few mins depending on your taste for softness. Add noodles cook the 3 min for them.
Optional: drain water (keep for soup)
Add ramen flavor packet and butter. Mix up and eat. (Sriracha as needed)

Garlic powder (very little) is also good but not required. Can make your own seasoning as well and ditch the ramen seasoning. I'd say play around at home either way. Lots of veggie options out there that are light and will keep a day or two.

Also, there are lots of ramens out there besides the basic ones at normal grocery stores. My city has a pretty big vietnamese community and their grocery stores have some pretty fancy ones. I'll find and link some as they are on amazon as well. These have 3, 4, 5 packets of seasonings/oils/spices and are pretty dang good (I tend to add veggies to most)

Dont like/want noodles? Rice works too. I'm sure there are other options as well. Cant think of any at the moment.

Oh yeah. Dried mushrooms. The asian market or Amazon should have those too. Great to add. Add towards end. Don't need too much hydration.

Best instant ramen I've ever had is Nissin Raoh Tonkotsu ramen. You can get it from Amazon here.

Then get this pair of bowls.

Then, go to the store and get some eggs, green onion, a few thick cuts of pancetta (like 1/4 inch), wood ear mushrooms, nori, soy sauce, and mirin. If you can't find mirin at the store, you can also order it from Amazon!

Do up the eggs like this.

Slice the green onion really fine, like 2mm slices. Slice at a 45 degree angle.

Throw the pancetta in a skillet with a bit of vegetable oil. After it starts to sizzle, drop 2 tbsp of soy sauce and mirin (each) into the pan. Once the pancetta is carmelized (you still want it to be a little floppy), remove from heat/set aside.

Get some water to a boil and then add the wood ear mushrooms. Cook for about 3 minutes (they cook fast). Drain/rinse the mushrooms in cold water, then slice them thin, about 1/4 inch. Set aside.

Cook ramen according to package instructions. Immediately after plating (while it's still too hot to eat), add your toppings: 1 egg (sliced in half), 2-3 pieces of pancetta, nori, green onion, and mushrooms to taste. Let the bowl cool with the toppings in it for a minute or so, then dig in.

That's how I do my "too lazy to get to a ramen shop" ramen. Total prep/cook time is less than 20 minutes.

Also, remember that the best bowls of ramen are the ones you eat next to each other. Happy noodling!

u/NvEnd · 4 pointsr/gifs

I do cilantro and sliced green (spring) onion. I also have bean spouts to add at the end. Plus a soft boiled egg is always amazing.

Also tom yum ramen is also easily the best imo and cheap as well.

u/Kicker0fE1ves · 3 pointsr/vegan

This ish right here.

Important though:

  1. Specifically this flavor. I've tried a few others and eh.

  2. Drain the water after microwaving/boiling, it's definitely a fried noodle dish rather than noodle soup.

I'm in love with these things oh my god.
u/jamison3659 · 3 pointsr/personalfinance

Three meals a day. I'd do it in February so 28 days... 28 * 3 = 84 meals. Call it 90 for contingency.

6 order of this costs me $81. I have prime so free shipping.

Plus the cost of butter and milk.

Can I add hot dogs or turkey to the mix? Can I grill it in a grilled mac and cheese sandwich?

u/theFlyingExplitive · 3 pointsr/MealPrepSunday

OK so this one is a little more complicated. I use the same chicken as the curry.

  1. Heat up butter in a pan, add diced mushrooms (baby bellas), garlic and red peppers.
  2. When mushrooms are near done, add onions - season.
  3. Add chicken, cook until warm.
  4. remove food into a bowl - reserve the liquid.
  5. add a little more butter (we use butter twice, so be careful how much you use.)
  6. You need to make a roux
  • and some chicken stock in another pan.
  • melt the new butter in the old pan then sprinkle flour a little bit at a time, stirring it in before adding more.
  • stir and heat until the roux turns brown. When it starts to turn brown, it will turn dark VERY FAST - you need to pay attention here.
  • add the chicken stock (should be around a slow boil now) a little bit at a time, stirring into the butter/four mixture. (if you have a stainless steel pan, or coated wisk, use the wisk). The more chicken stock you add, the thinner the sauce - I like it somewhat thick.
  1. Add the chicken/mushroom/onion mixture back in, season, stir and simmer for 1-2 mins.

It's hard to see, but I like to put it on a bed of brown rice and lentils (I use half a package per tray). I also usually eat it with some laughing cow cheese.

As for amounts, I believe it was 1200g of chicken, 350g of baby bellas, 142g of onions, 3 tsp of butter.

~490 calories per serving with 54g of protein
u/ViteKitchensTom · 3 pointsr/soylent

Yup! We're not trying to replace the really cheap stuff; it'll always have a place in our cabinets as well! For us it's not about replacing the inexpensive options; it's about a nutritionally complete replacement for unhealthy convenience foods like fast food or pizza (for comparison's sake, usually around $5-6 a meal).

That being said, instant ramen isn't limited to the basic Maruchan and Nissin offerings! Shin Ramyun Black is a super popular one that goes for around $2.40 a pack and you can even find the ultra premium Ichiran for nearly $8 a pack! Even Nissin has their own premium "Raoh" offering for about $3 a pack. You can find an entire aisle full of dozens of different varieties and price points at a lot of Asian supermarkets and it's actually pretty fun to explore! We're currently working our way through as many as we can for......research purposes ;)

u/AdasMom · 3 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

If you want to switch up your ramen game try these. I've barely eaten anything else for weeks. I think they might actually be addictive. And all of the varieties are good.

I think you could make cheap snack bars with things like oats, (almond) milk, pretzels, seeds (pumpkin, chia, sunflower), protein mix, chocolate, maple syrup (or honey), maybe something like cranberries. Basically mix that in a bowl and then spread it out on a pan and bake it.

also madras lentils are really tastey, though amazon is not where to buy them for cheap. just basically rice and beans that are microwavable are good choices.

personally I really like cereal (like cereals that are grains and nuts), and bananas go well with cereal.

hmm, thats all i got. But I second werewolfgirl34's like to vegan sandwiches. they all look good honestly.

You can turn a beer can into a camping stove with a knife and some alcohol.

Nuts and dried fruit are great healthy snacks that don't require refrigeration.

"REI has some fancy ones," I hate to break it to you, but other than the extra $1 or so they charge for being in an REI those aren't that fancy. If you want tolerable MREs that are easy to use just suck it up and buy a few of those and some cliff bars. Otherwise Wal-Mart has similar ones for maybe $1-$2 less each that taste the same.

I mean you're buying food that has been fully prepared and cooked then freeze-dried so you won't find any TV-dinner type stuff.

If you want military grade MREs with 1300calories per meal go for these Amazon Military Surplus MREs. Still ~$7 per meal. I backpack often and usually just buy the Wal-Mart/Gander Mountain one for $5.

> What do you love the most about your new home?

Snow and Climate

I came from a tropical country, passed by the Equator, day/night cycle is always stable, there's only 2 season : dry & rainy season. Average temperature around 27-30 Celsius.

Enter UK, 4 seasons, different day/night cycle each season, and Daylight Savings Time. First winter was rough, I had to wear a quad layer clothing in order to survive the near-zero temperature outside. Now it's spring and I'm sweating on 15 degree Celsius (that's already freezing in Indonesia).

> Favourite indonesian and british dish?

Indonesian dish? Top pick :

  • Sauteed Kale (local name Kangkung, also called water spinach, swamp cabbage, or morning glory)
  • Fried Tempeh
  • Sambal Terasi (Fishcake hot sauce)

Put three of them in front of me and I'm a happy man. Total cost of that food should be around 4 Pounds for 1 servings here in UK, in Indonesia its MUCH cheaper, less than 1 Pounds for 4 servings.

As for one thats easily available worldwide, I think it's Indomie Goreng. IMO, that's the best Instant Noodle in my Country.

As for British Dish, I can't say much, haven't found any british-specific dish here. And if there's any, I doubt I can eat it since I only eat halal meat and can't consume any alcohols (you can call it inconvenient but I've lived with it since I was born, so no big deal xD)

One of my dad's specialties is the ichiban leftover soup.
Make the soup, add whatever left over cooked meat you have, shredded. Add in bok choi, broccoli, green onions, and an egg or two.

Mi Goreng is one of my favourite instant soups.

there is a product that you can buy. it is stored in the pantry no refrigeration required. it's meatless, vegan and still really good! they are called Madras Lentils. they can be found in the grocery store. and sometimes Costco will carry them. Much cheaper at Costco. you can get a box of 9 packs for $10. Here is a link

they are good as a bowl of chili, in tacos, nachos, and on hot dogs or hamburgers for chili burgers or dogs.

Another idea is when you cook to make more than you are going to eat so that you have leftovers. for instance, Rotisserie chicken. after dinner. pick the chicken clean. now you have meat for soup, casseroles, burritos, enchiladas, etc...

Ground beef, can be made into meatloaf sliced and frozen. sloppy joe sauce can be frozen, Salisbury steaks also can be made ahead and made into meals and frozen. would make great lunches or dinners.

Cooked ground beef, you can make again taco seasoned meat, for tacos nachos, burritos etc. also you can make sloppy joes, hamburger gravy etc.

Do you have a crock pot? If you don't, that's likely the best way to spend these $15 for long-term easier cheaper food. Amazon Warehouse Deals is the best place to look (imo). The Crock-Pot SCR300-SS 3-Quart Manual Slow Cooker, Silver is $15.67 right now but there are a bunch of other options too. It makes cooking dry beans a lot easier, and is just overall a great kitchen tool for spending less money on food and making cooking simpler.

If food is the thing you need most, here's what I'd buy personally (I don't live anywhere near a whole foods, and Amazon Fresh is not available in my area). I'm focusing on convenience foods for this because the real basics- rice, beans, oats, flour, are at least twice as expensive on Amazon (for me) in comparison to local options. The three items listed below are the same price or cheaper on Amazon as they are locally, and total $14.02 .

u/giraffevomitfacts · 2 pointsr/bicycletouring

All natural as in just nuts. That's usually how it's branded. The other stuff just tastes like sweet brown lard to me.

I tour a lot in cold climates and dinner is pretty important to me. If you eat cheese, boxed mac and cheese works really well. Some nights I'd eat two entire boxes with olive oil and the cheese packets, or butter if I had it. You can add one of those Indian entree pouches (amazon.com/Tasty-Bite-Indian-Lentils-Microwaveable/dp/B0007R9L4M) to mac and cheese as well, or just to a shitload of pasta with butter/oil and chunks of cheese. As for bread, buns from grocery stores work well, they are squishy rather than crumbly like bread slices and they are scalable. Buy however many you need. Slather one with butter, peanut butter, honey and a throw in a chunk of cheddar, it's a good breakfast. Avocados are a good green to eat, they go well with cheese and bread and travel reasonably well near the top of a pannier. They also have a ton of calories. I'd get a carrot once in a while to eat raw and feel like I was getting vegetables. You can also grab some broccoli, chop it up, throw it in about halfway through your pasta/mac cooking, and you get some veggies in the meal. I'd supplement every meal with as many spoonfuls of some kind of butter/honey/peanut butter slurry as I needed to feel full.

I'm a poor student who eats a lot of cup noodles. My favourite is anything from the Nong Shim Shin brand. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0054G7HR4. It's a Korean pot noodle, you should be able to find it in any specialty (East) Asian shop. Very nice, very spicy. Perfect for a cold weather. They have several flavours, I think.

For those 'super noodles' type, try Indomie ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WG2dLLIZK3Y&feature=youtube_gdata_player). This one comes from Indonesia, and is really nice as well. You can cook following the Maggi style, as suggested in the other post.

And Pot Noodles is terrible. Once you've tasted the East Asian products, you'd never go back to pot noodles.

Shin Ramyun is a solid A- at all times. Its a nice staple, good spice packet, good dried veggie packet (shiitake is always welcome). Some people will call bullshit, but I actually like Shin Ramyun black.

Mama's Tom yum flavor is awesome. just awesome. kind of tiny, but also cheap.

Same with Indomie hot and Spicy flavor.

Sapporo Ichiban is again a nice staple. I'd say solid B unless you really like one of the flavors. Wife REALLY likes the tonkutsu, but its artificially flavored, and the only one of the basic flavors that has that on the label. I don't know why.

I also enjoy the Myojo Udon you see there with a lot of scallions and white pepper added to the mix. Obey the instructions on this one: boil noodles separately from a pot of just water. use the hot water on the flavor pack (and white pepper to taste, probably a lot), drain noodles and put in stock, add scallions and whatever else. maybe do a soy egg or something. I like beef or spicy flavors on this one.

I had a 3-cup (cooked) black and decker rice cooker that could go down to half a cup (raw) pretty reliably, though the bottom would sometimes be a bit crisp if I didn't turn in off right after the rice was finished. It was like $20 for the cooker, I think.

If you don't eat rice super often, maybe try these. The portion size is quite good, and so is the taste/consistency. I'm not sure about the starch issue though.

u/apis_cerana · 1 pointr/tonightsdinner

Just be aware that the price markup online is ridiculous. E.g., Amazon sells Maruchan ramen 24-packs (those 5 for $1 noodles) for close to $20. Don't expect amazing quality for the price, because what you paid $16 for might have been like $6 at the local asian supermarket (not that it would be bad by any means, but not as gourmet as the price would indicate).

I honestly can't remember anything about the taste, but I had a couple college friends rave over Mama noodles. If you love spicy, Nongshim noodles have the best seasonings.

I would check out your local chain supermarkets and see if they have an 'asian' section; apparently Walmart sells those Mama noodles. And if you're ever in the area of an asian market, stock up like crazy lol.

So $24 for 8 packages of 3 bundles? 24 bucks for 24 bundles, $1/bundle? Sounds good to me

Ah yes, /u/theramenrater is the man. He has me hooked on these bad boys (yes i know they aren't really ramen). And oh man you have me fiending for that miso. Sounds spectacular. Don't hurt me, but I've never had a fresh bowl miso yet. It will be done, oh yes it will be done. Even if I just find a decent ramen shop in NYC that's close by. Any suggestions?

Thanks! It's a quick fix to rid us of Hangry attacks lol. They love adding their own soy sauce and personalizing it to their liking.

I did a quick search & I believe this is the brand. I'm sure yippy found find it or something similar at an international market. Their Udon noodles are great in stir fries too.

Edit: Found this on Amazon! Hakubaku Organic Ramen, 9.5-Ounce - Pack of 8

Spicy Tuna with Ramen Noodles.
This is my go-to fast & easy recipe, & is very cheap (well under $2/serve), & uses only pantry ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • A single-serve can of tuna, ideally in oil, but any kind will work. 95gm, maybe 3-4 US oz?
  • A packet of Indomie Mi Goreng instant ramen.

    Method: Drain the tuna.
Put the noodle brick on the boil, per the directions, over cooking is fine.
Put a little oil in a pan or wok, scorch the tuna a little, add all the flavour/oil sachets, stir thoroughly, & take off the heat. Drain the noodles, add to the pan, return to heat, & stir thoroughly.

Variations: The orange sauce packet is hot chilli, & is hot by Indonesian standards, not Western standards so you may not want to use the whole packet the first time you try it. The default recipe can be a little dry. Adding a tablespoon or two of jarred crushed tomato or salsa along with the flavour packets works.

Even cleaning as you go, you're done in under 10 minutes.

This specific brand doesn't seem to be available anywhere online. But if you liked that flavor you might like Mama's Tom Yum or Mama's Spicy Tom Yum.

Hakubaku Organic Ramen, 9.5-Ounce (Pack of 8)

Some chicken stock, a protein, cheap veg...maybe get yourself some miso paste. Easy, not chock full of shit and sodium, and tasty. Buy the box, one pack has three, one part is a meal and some leftovers.

u/NoraTC · 1 pointr/Cooking

I am so sorry. MREs are your best answer for balance and price. My parish gives out emergency food packages for folks who are homeless or suddenly stranded, with lost of chicken salad instant meals and individually packaged fruit cups, but that is a killingly expensive option (and boring) option over the long haul. Make sure your car gets equipped with a dish pan and soap/rags/towels for cleaning any dishes you do use, because food poisoning is bad. Also 2 small coolers, one for hot and one for cold will let you take advantage of the ability to use the office kitchen microwave and fridge while you are otherwise "camping".

u/Dr_Scoobie · 1 pointr/funny

Oh right, shipping is crazy expensive in the US. Goods don't have to travel far in the UK so shipping tends to be pretty cheap. We often get 'free delivery' where it's included in the price.

If you factor in shipping It's probably not worth it. They're far far better than any of the big brand stuff, but it's still ramen at the end of the day. It can't beat a properly prepared Sunday Roast with Yorkshire Puds. If you see any instore though, definitely give it a try.

Dark cocoa powder is really awesome to mix into shakes / oatmeal. I use it a lot with chocolate protein powder and it's great for chocolate cravings.

Drink lots of water - add in flavor drops if that helps

Miracle Noodles are trace in calories and add massive quantities of volume. I pan fry them with veggies and add in some seasoning to taste. Great snack!

It won't ever be easy to be on a cut but it will get easier. I eat 6-8 meals a day so if I get hungry I know the next meal is just around the corner. If I am hungry I just like to remember that it's part of the process.

I also drink diet pop from time to time or soda water with water flavoring. The carbonation keeps me full for a bit.

As others said: coffee, air popped popcorn, seasoning for flavor, vegetables, spinach for volume in salads.

Hells yes. I had one final canister of this stuff hoarded in the freezer from before they discontinued it, and went through quite a bit of it while pregnant. My grandmother always had a can of "Grated American Cheese Food" around, which is long gone, and I can't even find a pic of it on the Internets. Luckily this stuff is a fine replacement -- allegedly, it's actually Kraft powdered cheese.

For more traditional style ramen, I’m a big fan of the Nissin Demae Black Garlic Oil Tonkotsu. Only two season packs (powdered soup stock and the black garlic oil), but nice and rich, and relatively inexpensive. The Nissin Raoh tonkotsu ramen is also really good, if a bit more expensive.

I’m sure any Asian grocery should have it, possibly the Asian section of a supermarket too. Also ordering it online is always an option too.

First off, the type of Ramen you get makes a difference. If all I have access to is a standard grocery store, I'll go for the chili, oriental or roast chicken flavor. But most of the time I get my ramen at the asian market where they have way more brands/flavors to chose from than Maruchan. My fav is Indomie Mi Goreng Instant Noodle which has 2 sets of flavor packets in it: one that's the seasoning powder and fried onions, the second is a 3 pack of seasoning oil, sweet soy sauce, and chili sauce.

Second, I typically keep little homemade frozen packages of chopped veggies on hand for throwing into omelets or ramen, so I'll usually add that and a soft boiled egg. Ramen is mostly a soft boiled egg delivery device for me.

u/yuhkih · 1 pointr/fitmeals

There is a brand called Tasty Bites that makes ethnic style foods that come in an envelope and they don't need refrigeration until you open the pouch. (amazon link to one variety) do you have access to a microwave? When the roofers came to work on my house they brought their own microwave, lol.

IndoMie Ramen

This is an Indonesian Ramen brand and I’ve loved every flavor I’ve tried so far. They’re way better than the usual Nissin ramen. The Mi Goreng line is actually supposed to be prepared similar to chow mein, like cooking and frying the noodles in spices provided but I’ve found luck making it normally as well.

You can't get cheaper than this. That's about a pound ($1.33) a box! There aren't many cheese mongers around (and in the US they will sell "artesenal" cheese at huge markups). Trust me, the only thing cheaper are ramen noodle packets.

Holy crap, are you serious? 50 dollars is a lot of money. That's loads of food.
