Photoresistor for $0.50, put it under the bed such that it raises an alarm when light is detected.

Button for $0.08, put it under the bed such that it raises an alarm when not depressed.

If you want to go extra fancy, only have the alarm on when the engine is running.

There are solutions to this problem - you saying that there might be issues with the solutions doesn't negate the fact that they are easily replaced if broken, and importantly they are significantly cheaper to replace than a new hydraulics system, and WAY cheaper than buying a new truck.
