It makes your controller way more grippy, more meaty and without the crippling feeling of the full covers.
I have this exact one and it's been great.
You can probably find cheaper ones in the same style, but these look great and feel great.

I bought it for a 6'6 friend of mine who plays on the PlayStation. What he did was he wrapped his DS4 with two layers of Silicone case (e.g. https://www.amazon.com/Controller-DualShock-Anti-Slip-Protector-playstation-4/dp/B06XQB6C6Q or https://www.amazon.com/YoRHa-Silicone-Dualshock-Controller-PlayStation-4/dp/B06XT116CK/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=ds4%2Bsilicone%2Bcase&qid=1571360580&sr=8-6&th=1) , then whack on one of these extenders and it became much more comfortable fit for him.
Warning though that your controller will look like Frankenstein lol.

If you do end up using it, I highly recommend getting a dust cover for it. I got a vertical one for mine (the one I bought is no longer available on Amazon).

I haven't wanted skins, but I did pick up a new controller recently in an awesome color combo. This. I also recommend light bar decals/stickers like these. I've had my PS4 for a few years now and the decal I put on the default controller is still on it without issue. (I hated the light shining on my tv.)
Personally, I'd recommend replacement housing over a skin. Think there are also full housing kits that would give you different colored buttons. The controllers are pretty easy to take apart.
