Ok so let's talk about what you mean by a heat shield. If you're talking about the heat shields that cover the headers of your exhaust - leather will weather and burn. They do sell some very nice chrome and polish types that simply ratchet onto the pipes and they work very well - is this like what you're looking for?

Oh yeah, I forgot about the seat. Take the seat off and cover the bottom with some aluminum tape (http://www.amazon.com/Nashua-617020-SEPTLS573617020-Premium-Tapes/dp/B001S94T1S) your ass will thank you.

For my '72 I just made a new heat shield and backed it with this stuff.
I also made some little extra heat shields that I could attach to the same studs as the main one, I never got pictures of them while they were off the car, but here is what it looks like installed.

There are some dryer vents that come with a pest guard. Install one of those and make sure to clean it every few months. You can even find just a guard that will fit over some vents.

Was looking at something like this which should do the trick although I have read elsewhere these can cause issues with lint build up and should be avoided but I figure cleaning this thing however often necessary beats the alternative...
