Rip out that ugly old CFL spiral and put in a shallower LED flood bulb.

Or, if you use this Westinghouse convertor, you can put any kind of light fixture you like up there! https://www.amazon.com/Westinghouse-0101100-Recessed-Light-Converter/dp/B00FGQ19LC

I've used them twice and they work really well. You can put a pendant up there, or a flush fixture.

Be careful about any lighting cans that might be poking through into the attic. You want to make sure they are IC (in contact) rated to be actually touching the insulation or it is a fire hazard.

If the home is older, they are likely not IC rated. You can buy covers for the cans like this so you can pile insulation over the cover.

I went through this when I had insulation blown in and had to add those covers to several old cans.

The term you want is "eyeball trim". Silly name, I know.

But there are many retrofits that will work for you. Here is one example:

There are basically two types of LEDs you are going to find for residential lighting.

One type looks just like a regular light bulb, and you just open up whatever light fixture you have and replace the bulb with the LED equivalent.

The second kind is an LED with a replacement trim that are used in can lights, which are common in shower installations.

The retrofit kit (LED with trim) that I linked is not rated for "wet location", which is what you have in your shower. But, this one is... so just be sure of what you are buying.

Also be aware that some of these replacement bulbs are pretty large, so they may not fit in your fixtures (specifically these can replacements).

Finally, it is worth noting that many of the regular bulb form factor LEDs specifically state that they are not to be used in a totally enclosed fixture (as you likely have in your shower), so make sure you purchase one that can be used in that configuration.

This is a rather common problem. You can purchase ionsulated covers, or make them yourself:

https://www.amazon.com/Insullite-Recessed-Vented-Light-Cover/dp/B01MCQHSH9

https://www.amazon.com/CanCoverIt-RLC-Universal-Series/dp/B00545DDWI

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Tenmat-Recessed-Light-Cover-FF130E/204286308

The rest of it you can do yourself. Killing mold, adding vents, and adding additional insulation is a very easy DIY kind of project.

Bet you can do it for 1/4th the cost, and probably a better job while you are at it.

PAR means Parabolic Aluminized Reflector

Where ass BR means Bulged Reflector

So what's happened is you are loosing a little light that isnt being reflected down as efficiently. Also PAR's are 'narrow spot' and BR are more of a flood. So you are probably seeing a more washed out light that isn't as hot spotty. So like if you had a PAR up shining onto a specific spot on the counter you are now seeing more of a flood.

If they are recessed can lights you could possibly go to the new retrofit lights that just recently came out, tho not color.

2700k is one of the lowest lumen outputs. Also most people say kitchen lights should go cooler, more towards sunlight at 6500k. I personally dont like 6500k so I deal with it by adding more lights. And the cooler (higher in k) you go the brighter the Hue lights are.

What I did was added light strips above and below my cabinets to provide indirect uplight, and task lighting under the cabinets, and then the 5 can lights with br30 rgbw lights.

Check to see if you can find any of the recessed hue lighting kit retrofit: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Philips-Hue-White-Ambiance-4in-Dimmable-Integrated-Smart-LED-Recessed-Kit-801480/304218474 / https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Ambiance-Downlight-Compatible-Assistant/dp/B0798P29FV

Outside of that... not really. Or at least, I haven't found any. I've got ideas for how to do a home automation system that would link up with various other devices, though not elegantly.

Well it depends on what you need, right? But I did a Google search for you: https://www.amazon.com/Pack-White-Goof-Recessed-Light/dp/B00V2IF3J2

Dont give up on a recessed led module. Use halo with the lutron led dimmer. Industry standard with no buzz.

Sundry list: Kindle.

It's for my dad. His birthday and father's day are the same day. It's a combo gift. He's been through a lot, health-wise, and he's finally at a place he can relax. We both love reading and bond over books better than anything else. I'm one of 4 kids and reading was the thing we had together while I was growing up, that nobody else shared. It was really special.

Books list: Mr. Mercedes

Stephen King and I have a long relationship. I've got Dark Tower tattoos, even. I have read everything he's written that I could get my hands on. This comes out in June. I own all of his books in hardcover. My den is basically a shrine to Uncle Steve.

Home Improvement list: Recessed Light Can Converters

I bought a house last year. It's got sunken eyeball lighting in the kitchen. They really, really creep me out. I know it's irrational. But I plan to put mini pendent lights in instead. o_O

Kitchen and Noms list: Instant Read Pocket Thermometer

I recently bought a bread machine. It's great and I use it every day, almost. Some of the breads require water at an exact temperature. I need a thermometer that starts at zero for this.

Pets and Wildlife list: Feliway

I have a ten-year-old neurotic cat who takes his pants off when he's anxious. This helps keep him decent. ;)

My son's birthday list: Wooden Pantry Products

The boy turns 2 in May. He has a play kitchen, but no play food yet. (He did have some cardboard boxes that came with the set, but he ate them in true baby form.) This set of wood pantry items will hold up and also be fun for stacking.

Add-ons list: iRobot Scooba Hard Floor Cleaner

Because a bot's got to eat, too.

Thanks for the contest!^ifitisacontest^probably

Maybe recessed down light. Or retrofit. Or can light.

They make these Hue Recessed Lights

u/andpassword · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

I think you could probably make something along the lines of what you're looking for, but I'm not sure how the results would be...there're just a huge number of variables.

My first thought would be to use something like this facing convex side toward the lamp as a reflector. This would get you back lighting and the brushed surface would diffuse things pretty well. As to how to attach it...that's the tricky bit.

The easiest way would be to get a new set of trim rings that fir your lights and then use 2.5" machine screws to install the reflectors with some stand-off distance from the ceiling.

Warning: this may look donkey as shit. You probably shouldn't do it. But it might also be awesome. If you do it, tell me how it works out.

u/jhchristoph · 2 pointsr/DIY

I put 9 - 5" LED lights in a similar sized space (my basement Rec room) and it is way overkill. I have them separated on 2 dimmer switches, 3 back and six front.

I usually only have the back 3 on low, but when I want more light I put the front size on low as well.

I can't remember the amount of light the put out, but this is the same model I installed in 4".

I sell comercial & residental lighting for a living, part time carpenter, currently on my 3rd flipper at 30 years old. Your father would be 100% incorrect in my neck of the U.S.

Based on transactions not $$$ sold 80% of my residental sales are recessed lighting. 10% consists of LED flat panel & strip lighting for garages and barns. 10% outdoor lighting

Hands down the most comon remodel setup is a Halo E7RICATNB can with Halo LT56 LED trim. That setup can be had for less $$ than a decent LED hat & box. If your installing them into existi g drywall get the E7RICAT remodel can, attaches directly to the drywall. Link below to my kitchen/dining room. Im yet to defect or warrantee one of these

All-Pro LT560WH6930R 5/6 LED Retrofit Baffle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01INNA1FO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_E63WBbGEE1VZ3

Direct mounts are the newest on the almighty residential lighting scene, once the pricing comes down and they gain a bit more popularity they will replace the can/led trim combo completly.

Color is a big concern, I love the 4000k range but its hard to adjust to. 2700k or soft white was the staple for yyyyeeeeaaaarrrrrssssss. Eaton has a new trim with a switch on the back to change it from 2700k to 5000k. Go that route and try them all.

Several companies make BR30 lights for this purpose. When I pulled out the original flush mount recessed lights from the cans I had to buy and install baffle cone inserts, then just screw in the BR30 lights. Hue also makes a flush mount recessed light.

example of can light baffles: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074621NMC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have this ones, SYLVANIA LIGHTIFY ZigBee Full Color RT 5/6 Recessed Lights https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HF2CPO4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_c3S5CbM306KQE

I don’t think ikea have that style. If I use a regular bulb it get full of spider web and mosquito debri.

That why i recently got those not realizing they use a different Zigbee protocol.

I would use them a little longer if not I would get this Hue Smart Retrofit Recessed Downlight https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0798JMX2X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_h7S5CbNJ4JTJ0

Only because I can use the small remote with the HUE

u/Anti_SeaBear_Circle · 1 pointr/Hue

Sorry, I'm not 100% sure what you mean - are you saying these can be used to retrofit my led wiring and I can use the a19 bulbs?

u/ARenovator · 1 pointr/DIY

It is already a recessed light. What you are seeing is the exterior trim, known as 'eyeball' trim:

https://www.amazon.com/6130WH-Adjustable-Eyeball-Flanged-Recessed/dp/B076HYLZRG/

Pull it straight down to you. Should be held in place with a spring clip on either side. Squeeze them closed, and it should hang off the wires. Unscrew the assembly, and screw in an LED or any other bulb of your choosing.

I had the same issue I bought theses to put in the light fixture.

Mine is 20 x 20 I have 4 in the middle with a ceiling fan like a X Also one more with a eye bulb that used to face the fireplace sorta like a light for a picture but we turned it around.

I also installed 4 of these

Seems to be plenty of light for us.

Good idea, so maybe a deeper one like this:

The seller I bought from is no longer listed on Amazon, but these are the same style, albeit, a bit more expensive.

u/distantreplay · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

There are conversion kits for recessed can lights to surface mount that can eliminate the need for drywall repair and/or entry into the attic.
For example. Limited to 50lbs. And depends upon installation into a conventional new work recessed lighting fixture, not a retro, old work kit.

u/brudogg · 1 pointr/Lighting

acutally i am a pro photographer and one thing i never understand is when i am adjusting K temp for an image the higher I go, the warmer the light, where as with lighting it seems to be the opposite? i.e. 4100 flourescent seems to be much cooler than 2700K incandescent.

anyway, back to the relevant stuff...
I think LED seems good as ampersand mentions it has broader coverage and lower energy than halogen.

i went to the lighting store and they recommended something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Halo-Recessed-RL460830WH-4-Inch-Retrofit/dp/B0081K4TKI/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8

something tells me this isnt what i want, though im not sure why. im also not sure what retrofit means?

i think i want a more standard can/trim/lamp with dimmer as you have mentioned. any idea on budget for that setup if I have about 6-8 lights.

thanks!

u/Bob_Loblaw_Law_Bomb · 0 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Looks like you need the Bazz setup. The 2nd option you posted is just the socket and trim ring and you'll still need the can fixture that fits into the ceiling.

I can highly recommend these lights. I installed them recently with little difficulty. Had to get IC rated as they're covered with blown insulation in my attic. They look great and no problems so far.
