I used these floating shelf brackets. Three of them drilled into the wall studs, then some small 1x1x7” pieces of walnut drilled to slot over the metal brackets. Then the whole shelf just hangs on them. You can’t see the pieces it hangs on unless you get right up under it.

Hi Rradder, I found them at a local garden store but I have found them on amazon as well! https://www.amazon.com/ORZ-Planter-Mounted-Collapsible-Bracket/dp/B07L6Y8CTL/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=plant+wall+rings&qid=1569199815&s=gateway&sr=8-5 I bough the 4 inch and the 6 inch ones just to mix it up a bit!

I've seen a few of these built, so I wanted to give them a try. Flew some sorties tonight and pretty happy with them so far. Really nice to have something which can be removed easily when I'm done.

Extreme Velcro

I found this extreme velcro on a whim and it's awesome. It adheres to anything and locks your stick/throttle down tight, yet can still be removed when you are done. I used it to attach my IR clip to the headphones, and it's great there also.

Boards are simply a cheap bamboo cutting board I got at Walmart and sawed in two. Add the bolts and screws and I'd say this whole thing was less than $50.

Maybe be aware the brackets are on the small side, so if you want something that will hang lower, you'll want to look at something different.

Edit: just wanted to say....you'll need to wipe down the vices when you get them. They are covered with a light oil to prevent rusting I'd guess. Take a rag and give them quick wipe all over (the jaws too, they will leave a mark on your desk!)

I notched out a rectangle in the back with my router table and then used a drill guide to create holes for these floating shelf brackets.

Ben fulltiming in this Montana for about a year-and-a-half now. My wife and I found ourselves a little short on counter space at times. I made this foldable Leaf using shelf brackets off of Amazon and the table piece from a folding tv dinner table from Walmart. Super easy to do. Shelf folds down when not needed.

Why not just using invisible floating shelves brackets like this for example : https://www.amazon.com/Bestgle-Invisible-Floating-Stainless-Concealed/dp/B07F9Y49J7

I really can't understand why you are trying to make it more complicated as it is? Floating shelves are popular for a very long time so there is appropiate hardware for it on the market also for long time.

It could honestly just sit on the drawers and be fine (the countertop is heavy) but i secured it with L-brackets which work amazingly

u/ReenigneArcher · 2 pointsr/woodworking

Maybe an L shaped bracket on the inside?

There's lots of different sizes and hole configurations. The above is just one example. Make sure your screws are short enough where they won't go all the way through, but long enough where they hold decently.

u/Tokugawa · 2 pointsr/DIY

Use 3/4 plywood.

Ditch the corner bracket things you have on the bottom inside corners. Dowels and glue and/or screws will be just fine.

Get something like these and screw them to the back of the shelf. Put the skateboards on, and you're set.

The three skateboards is actually significant weight for a shelf-case like you're doing. A french cleat is a cheap and easy way to support that.

Thank you exactly what I needed.

Found a cheaper alternative on amazon as well:

You might want to define terms you use, I'm guessing RSJ is rolled-steel joist, which as I understand it is a fancy and confusing way of saying steel I-beam?

I have never had to mount anything to a steel I-beam, will it take screws?

If so, Something like this might work.

I used 4 of these to hold a R710 in my first open air 42u, screwed into the side holes and was all set.

Fastened into the rack with studs and M6 screw obviously

You could try drilling through the frame and bolting reinforced corner brackets in all 4 corners. Example: https://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Multifuction-Triangle-Multi-Angle-Connector/dp/B07L832PZP/ref=sr_1_148?keywords=corner+brackets&qid=1573596889&sr=8-148

Nice! Are those shelf brackets the ones from here?

Did you have any issues with them being not quite square?

u/MattB43 · 1 pointr/woodworking

I make and sell a few different styles of floating shelves - If you want just a 2x8 or 2x10 shelf, these are really good. They come with drywall anchors and screws, but if you attach them to studs you can literally hang from them.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NQ6R9CF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The hardest part is making sure you build them to hit studs if you're going on a typical drywall wall.

If you are ok with a taller shelf, you can build a shelf that's basically a wood box, with a wooden bracket that bolts to the wall like this

I actually prefer these because they're easier to hang, but it depends on the style you're going for.

If I'm doing the shelf for my own home I can certainly drill directly into a stud. If I sell these, then I feel the mounting plates are needed.
