The answer you’re looking for: “that’s impossible to lose the ability to use your arm from breaking it. Quack doc. Don’t listen to him.”

The truth: it’s absolutely possible that you could break your arm so badly that you cause nerve damage and lose full mobility.

If skating is a big part of your life, then skate cautiously. Bulk up on expensive pads. Hell, wrap your arm and splint it every time you skate. Learn how to fall properly with a physical therapist and explain that this is not about continuing reckless behavior but learning to be more cautious while still following a passion.

Maybe try some other similar sports that aren’t as demanding? If it’s the adrenaline you like then have you tried rock climbing? It’s definitely not a 100% safe sport, but if you’re hooked up to a proper belay then you may not be in as much of a risk of a hard impact like you are with skating.

What makes this arm break so particularly bad? Is it that you’re crushing multiple bones in the wrist or hand, or your elbow? Is it lacerations to the tendons? A simple, clean break is going to cause weak points in the bone, but if you’ve broken it in the same place twice you at least know where your vulnerable spot is. That’s the spot you wrap up. Fuck... see if someone on Etsy or some expensive custom skate shop sells custom pads that can be molded to your arm.

There’s smart ways to approach these things. If skating is important to you, then make sure you consider how important mobility is to you, too, and approach your physical wellbeing with the same rigor and passion.

Edit: also, don’t be too proud or committed to the “badassery” of being fucking stupid. If you skate, you’re gonna fall, but if you skate with pads and you fall you’re gonna be better protected. If you approached cars the same way as skating you’d be saying, “well i have to drive to get around and even though I’ve been in two horrible car wrecks and somehow survived without a seatbelt I’m still not going to wear a seatbelt because it’s not part of the look I want to have while driving.” You have three options here: 1) stop skating 2) continue skating without pads, risk breaking your arm and getting severe nerve damage that renders your left arm useless, 3) suck it up, tell yourself skating is more important to you than the appearance of being a skater, wear some god damn pads and don’t be as reckless.

Thanks for the reccs! I have a Triple Eight helmet!

As for type of pads I see that there are "covert" versions which seem like a softer version with less plastic as opposed to the normal ones. Not sure if it's worth getting those if they're not much protection. Any thoughts on the differences?
