Well you definitely want to avoid sliding on your knees, but buy some padded goalie pants. They wont stop everything, but they help alot.

When you go to a shoe store, you can ask someone who works there to measure your foot. That way you will know where to start on find the best shoe size. Some shoes fit differently so, you might need to go up a size, or you might need a wider fit.

I have a size 7 woman's foot, and use the adidas Copa Zone Cushion II sock in size small which fits really well. Granted aren't official fencing socks, but they are thicker in the foot area and are comfortable to pull over the knee.
If you can't find official fencing socks, I'd highly reccomend these!
Honestly? I wouldn't even bother with shin guards. I just use long Rugby socks like these:

Yeah, might be. I guess the ones I'm wearing (adidas essentials) aren't technically basketball shorts, they're halfway between soccer and basketball shorts in length. I initially started wearing them because they have pockets, much more convenient, but now I actually prefer the fit too (compared to adidas parma).
