Meh, red meat should be eaten in moderation, this is not news. You can do a pretty effective stew or small roast in a small countertop oven

u/Kouse · 6 pointsr/BuyItForLife

America's Test Kitchen likes the Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven though it is expensive at around $250 USD.

The Hamilton Beach Set & Forget Toaster Oven with Convection Cooking was rated their best buy, and is significantly cheaper at $83 USD.

I've only used my roommate's cheapo toaster oven, and that one sucked, so I can't give any personal recommendations.

They are not all created equal, I strongly recommend this one if you can find it

It can be super annoying to burn your hands or drop food on the oven door if it opens down, and many are narrow, this one is fairly spacious

u/Bitcoon · 3 pointsr/mildlyinteresting

Just get a toaster oven. I haven't used one of these archaic 'bread only' types of toasters in ages, but a toaster oven basically gives you free reign to toast whatever and however you want. It heats up in no time, so there's none of that preheating nonsense, you can make anything you would normally make in an oven or reheat food in it (leftover pizza is amazing coming out of a toaster oven), and the best part is it doesn't heat the whole room up and you can (usually, depending on the model) easily see inside or pop it open to check how your stuff's doing. There's no guesswork, no surprise burnt results, no incomprehensible rules to how it does what it does. You just set the temp, set the time, and go~

For reference, the one I use is fairly cheap and a bit simplistic, but you get good results with it. It's worth the extra compared to what you'd pay for a standard toaster~

I'd start buying fresh fruit once a week to complement and sometimes replace the McDonald's and Taco Bell. I think that's the bare minimum.
Other than that I would get some sort of cooking facilities- maybe a crock pot as suggested elsewhere or a countertop oven and hotplate- probably better if you can get them combined. If I had room, and cash, after that then I might also want a minifridge. It's an expensive outlay initially but would save a lot of money in the long run as well as improve diet considerably.

u/opinionrabbit · 3 pointsr/vegan

I understand your dilemma. Maybe you can just tell your mom about your worries and find a solution. You could even buy a cheap oven for her and split the cost?

Yup. There's tons of countertop & toaster ovens out there that fit frozen pizzas. Some of them have a round bit cut out of the back wall to make sure a pizza could fit.

Here's one that's only about $50 that fits a whole 12" pizza. They're also really good for chicken nuggets, fish strips & frozen buffalo wings.

...or baking a tray of brownies.

u/ScandalousBlanche · 2 pointsr/Wishlist

I love it! I use it for (obvi) toast all the time, and keeping things warm, like tonight...the meatballs were done early, so I foiled them up and stuck them in there on warm. Also good for a pizza slice, too...but [mine's pretty small,] (http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Beach-ensemble-Toastation-22722/dp/B00CXVX8DK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418181374&sr=8-1&keywords=toaster+oven+red) you can't get a lot in there. I don't know if they make them bigger.

u/lhbtubajon · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Thanks for your input. Price is not a barrier, per se, but price needs to be proportional to value. If I'm going to drop two or three grand on a toaster oven, it had better be built like a tank, do everything the best, look great, and last for 50 years before being re-furbished to last another 50. Oh yeah, and a lifetime warranty.

Basically, it had better be a daily source of joy for the next 5 decades, or my wife will have serious issues with my spending 10x any other high-end toaster oven.

Any thoughts on the Cuisinart models TOB-200 and TOB-260? It seems to get nothing but very good to great reviews. This Kitchenaid KCO273SS also seems to get very strong reviews.

I bought the Panasonic NB-G100P (a precursor to the NBG110P?) in 2004 for $87.63. It still works great 9 years later and I can attest for its awesomeness.

G'day, I'm a little new to all of this, so hope this helps!

Instead of the bowl/utensil set, go with This one it's 23 pieces $39.98 then grab These bowls for only $8.99
Don't buy any books, there is more info online.
For shampoo, just use bicarbonate of soda (in a bottle and mix with warm water) then after using that, rinse off with apple cider vinegar. Natural and will clean your hair! (Just don't start eating salad in the shower). Cheap enough at about $5 for 2 months of washing hair.
This one is $10 cheaper and would do the same thing!

I don't know if this is what you are after, but judging from the other answers on here I think I may have done what you asked. If not, sorry!

Edit: also make your own GF flour!

1 1/2 cups (240 g) brown rice flour.
1/2 cup (96 g) potato starch.
1/4 cup (40 g) white rice flour.
1/4 cup (30 g) tapioca flour.
optional: 1 tsp xanthan gum (not necessary).

I've got nothing in terms of getting the gas fixed, but I have a few suggestions for your cooking and shower needs. If any new ideas come to mind for gas repairs I'll definitely let you know.

My mom's oven broke a few years ago and it was one of those "built into the wall" ones that was stupid expensive to replace. So till they could save up she got a countertop convection like this one (I think that might be the actual model). She still uses it all the time because she likes it more than the real oven, lol. Between that and a hot plate you can have something stove-ish for about $100. It's not as good as your gas stove, and it's not free, but you'll be able to cook stuff more easily. If you have a crock pot that'll help too as I'm sure you already know.

Also, for situations when you have water and sewer but not hot water, a camping shower bag ($20-ish) is a decent solution. The water heats pretty darn fast if you set the bag in the sun, and it's nice to be able to shower at home. (You could also use an electric kettle to heat water and fill the bag with a combo of boiling water and cold tap water.) I have long hair and the shower bag is still enough for me if I do a "navy shower."

I wish I could do more, but I'm thinking of you and hoping your tomorrow is brighter than today.

I don't have this issue but, you could look into these items maybe??

this one is a portable personal oven. Will heat your food up while you work.

If you will be on site for 20 to 30 minutes you can use one of these..

The Cuisinart CMW-200 combo convection microwave is a better value, has much greater capacity to rotisserie full chickens and pizza, and is more versatile as microwave as well. Has a durable stainless steel interior and thick pyrex cooking plate that rotates. Comes with a stainless steel grill rack that can be used to cook two layers of food at the same time, or turn it upside down to grill with a drip plate underneath.

Here's a photo of a roast chicken made in one. I've owned one for several years. A cheaper option is a counter top convection oven. I got one with a rotisserie like this one. Making roast chicken at home will often pay for these in savings alone, particularly if you buy whole chickens on sale for less than $1/lbs. Save the bones to roast for making stock in a pressure cooker.

Fear cuts deeper than swords

OOH I LOVE SCAVENGER HUNTS. Placeholder. I'm working on this. Goodbye sunday night productivity.

EDIT Aug 11, 11:44pm PST

1.) something that is gray.

2.) Something reminiscent of rain. It rains so much in my city and on those days I like to have my tea and soup and all the yummy hot homecooked food at school in the library while I study. I already have a great thermos for my tea and hot cocoa but not for my soups/food.

3.) Something food related that is unusual. I don't know if this is necessarily food related but WOOOO TEA. MANA-TEA. Seriously this is awesome.

4.) Something on your list that is for someone other than yourself. A wii for my mom because she has been wanting a wii or ipad for a long time. My bro and i think the wii would be better because at least we could all play it together when we go home to visit.

5.) I will recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It's the book I just finished reading and I feel like it has helped me a lot. I am so much more motivated and driven and it is helping me make some tough choices in my life. I am a senior in college but this book can help anyone who is at any place in their life I think. I currently have this on my wishlist which is like a supplement to the book. Seriously though, read it, share it with everyone you know. Let's make the world a happier place.

6.) An item that is less than a dollar. Awww yeee. They always seem to have one of these on the coffee table at my brother's house. Wherever he lives. Even though it's never his. But yeah, they're cool but I don't actually want one.

7.) Something related to cats. THIS IS SO AWESOME. I have another mug with the disappearing thing on my wishlist too. But yeah, I love cats, I just don't have much cat stuff on my wishlist. I do need a real cat though... hint hint nudge nudge

EDIT Aug 12, 12:15am PST

8.) Something that is not useful, but so beautiful you must have it. Okay it's not Amazon but it is beautiful and I have had my eye on it for a year. Despite that fact that I do not plan on having children for at least 8 years. Dem hormones are a'ragin.

9.) I know it's not REALLY a movie but... A movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. Why? Because it is so beautiful and awe inspiring. It really brings me a sense of peace every time I watch it.

10.) Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. Explain. I can put on my holy strainer hat and pray to The Flying Spaghetti Monster to save me from the zombies.

11.) Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals. I know I used this for another one but really, I think doing these exercises would help me in all areas of life.

12.) One of those pesky Add-On items. These beauties, even though I doubt I can grow them without a yard...

13.) The most expensive thing on your list. Your dream item. Why? My little acer hand me down freezes a lot, can't do multiple things at once, doesn't have a cd drive, has a screen too tiny to edit photos or edit my website. Basically everything is frustrating. And I'm a college student. So I use the computer for basically everything... and everything the little laptop CAN do takes forever.

EDIT Aug 12, 1:51am PST

14.) Something bigger than a bread box. If you don't think that is big enough, then here, but it's newly added.

15.) Something smaller than a golf ball. Well, I'm pretty sure this is smaller than a golf ball. If it wasn't, I'd be disappointed.

16.) Something that smells wonderful. Mmm imagine the ginger lemon grass!

17.) A (SFW) toy. And here's another one because I couldn't decide which one looks more fun...

18.) Something that would be helpful for going back to school.

19.) Something related to your current obsession, whatever that may be. Currently obsessed with learning all kinds of new jewelry techniques! Also obsessed with tea because it's the one thing my boyfriend and I developed an interest in together. It didn't start out as either of our interests.

20.) Something that is just so amazing and awe-inspiring that I simply must see it. Explain why it is so grand. THIS IS SO PRETTY AND USEFUL AT THE SAME TIME. Seriously so cute, has lovely details, 8gb, and you can wear it as a pendant. Whaaaat!

EDIT: this lovely is made in oregon!

Get a convection oven. They're a smaller version of the real thing, and you can cook lasanga or french fries or cake in them.

If you had something like this you could just put the whole sandwich in there. It's a whole lot easier.

u/redfred2 · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Sorry, but here is the best toaster I've used this every day for over 5 years and it still works flawlessly.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/Baking

In that price range, I'm asking for a countertop convection oven this year. I want the Kitchenaid model, which is around $130. This one is in your price range and has good reviews: http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Beach-31197-Countertop-Convection/dp/B0002HDWNS/ref=sr_1_9?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1323112630&sr=1-9

I want one because I hate wanting to bake but not wanting to heat up the whole house in summer by turning on the oven.

u/SamuraiJackAG · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

This one has done me well for years. Even brought it to work and it's held up there just fine. Cuisinart TOB-1010 Toaster Oven Broiler, 14" x 15.75" x 14", Silver

u/EraserGirl · 1 pointr/Frugal

there are some cookbooks on amazon for frugal student cooking
used copies plus shipping is about $5. and some have great reviews.

Obviously there some awesome websites for recipes http://studentrecipes.com/ http://www.budgetbytes.com/

What i found useful were recipes you could make from raw ingredients you could get easily cheaply and store well. this is why pasta, rice and noodles are popular. the base is always handy and all you have to do is add dressings. Cans of beans and nuts are also great ways to add a protein to your meal without having to worry about it going bad before you eat it.

Find about 12 recipes you like and can make easily and then just rotate them. That's enough to keep you from being bored, save MEAT centered recipes for once a week, such as in a crockpot and the rest of the week eat meat free. Because meat is the most expensive ingredient and the easiest to screw up and let it go bad before you remember to cook it. Essentially you buy the meat on the same day you cook it and the leftovers go in the fridge and have to be eaten before the next time you cook meat, so the leftover won't go blue and fuzzy.

Indeed a crockpot is essentia Proctor 1.5 slow cooker $13 but i'd get the biggest one you can afford. ...actually when i moved in this apartment i had no serious money and no stove. I started off with all the inexpensive items from Proctor Silex - usually sold in walgreens, cvs, and other cheap appliance stores... Proctor 1 liter electric kettle $14 Proctor Toaster Oven $22 Proctor Hot Plate $14 which does have a draw back for boiling large pots of anyting, it's really a more egg frying/ grilled cheesy thing. Black and Decker has a 3 cup rice cooker for $12

It is easy for your dorm room to get unkempt if you start cooking in it for real, so a dedicated foot locker perhaps upright with shelves banged in. Put everything away clean when you don't use it. Put a dishpan in the locker, 1st thing you take out put your dirty items in it as you cook and eat, then take it to the bathroom and wash everything and then bring it all back and put it in the footlocker and then put everything in on top.

One of my favorite books was Cooking in a Bedsitter by Whitehorn..an English cookery book, but the ideas worked. A bedsitter is a dorm room with no running water, no fridge and nothing but a gas ring/hot plate to cook on. So basically you have to really think out what you are going to make and plan ahead. My solution was to cook small amounts very often so i didn't have to store a lot of food or leftovers.

That Black&Decker one looks like a good choice.

The one we use for testing is a Proctor Silex 31111.

In general, I suspect that small cheap toasters will work better than bigger ones because they heat up and cool down faster.

u/BeckyDaTechie · 1 pointr/EatCheapAndHealthy

Fifthing or sixthing the toaster oven. I cook for, at most, 2 people, and my smoke and CO2 alarm goes off every time I open the oven door if I'm running it higher than 300*. A large toaster oven can accommodate 2 individual pizzas or a small casserole dish.

There's also this puppy which makes my space-challenged, efficiency-minded heart go all fluttery.

u/iQQaLot · 1 pointr/beermoney

I got a toaster oven off Amazon through swagbucks, back when SBTV and Entertain Now was a bit more generous.

u/myfriendrandy · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

I've been eyeing this one. Waring Pro TCO650 Digital Convection Oven. Haven't pulled the trigger yet but it has nice reviews

u/FuckYouImFunny · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

I bought this for $63 when it went on sale on Amazon. It works wonderfully well and I use it daily. Hasn't shown any signs of stopping and there or may not be a 5 year warranty on it (according to reviews).

I actually cooked a pizza in there, didn't turn out bad. I prefer the oven though for pizza for the crispy crust. The convection bake is definitely the best part.

u/quarterbaker · 1 pointr/Fitness

Get yourself a decent toaster oven. Love mine. Best way to make a little bacon, or garlic toast, or anything you'd do in a full-sized oven.

Plus, I'm getting really good at broiling, which I've never done properly in a full-sized oven.

This is the one I got. $58. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LU2I428?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

I had this same problem many years ago and I bought a countertop oven for cheap and I was able to cook everything, chickens, pizzas, etc. I didn't have room in the kitchen but I had a corner in my dining room with a corner table I put it on. It was the size of a toaster oven but maybe twice as high and maybe a couple inches wider.

edit: it was something similar to this

nah, crumb catch is on the bottom- there's a little hook thinggy on mine under the rack that holds a pan.

Mines the "easy access" oven. but I think its on other ones as well.
