He just traded his number for $1000. Guess he wasn't too attached to it.

Also - 4 wheel drive and actual off-road tires wouldn't hurt.

Never wheel alone
Keep a tow strap, preferably a kinetic yanker
Keep an air compressor
Air down your tires
Stay out of the water, your diff and trans breather tubes are about 20 inches off the ground and they will suck water

If you're going to break any of the those rules, buy a winch and self recovery block
Above all else, NEVER WHEEL ALONE!!!

As said before weight times 1.5. My truck is 8000# so I have a 12,000# winch.

You need a 5000# winch. Like this. http://www.amazon.com/Superwinch-1450200-single-roller-fairlead/dp/B00023S4QC

What you linked to is a normal winch, which uses a ratchet wheel and pawl to prevent unwinding. It must be manually disengaged to lower your load, while supporting the load on the handcrank.

The search term "Brake Winch" should get you some good results - both Dutton-Lainson and Fulton make brake winches that allow you to stop the load at any point with your hand off the winch, automatically.

Here are two such options: DLB800A

K1550

You can also get a worm gear winch, which will not backdrive under normal conditions (no risk of your load dropping). They are slow, but simple to operate. Harbor Freight sells a cheap one if you are in the US.

Good luck!

For an extra $50 you can get the Superwinch Tigershark 9500. It actually has a sealed solenoid. I was orignally going to get the Superwinch LP8500 for $299, but for the extra $50 this is a significant upgrade IMO

I'm very happy with my purchase, it's done well.

Two ways to consider: if space or compactness is paramount, an ATV/UTV winch or hoist may suffice. Almost all are 12v, but getting a converter should not present much of a problem.

Or purchase a trailer winch or hoist:

For the weight it is going to hoist, or the time it will be running, I don't think getting it hot will be much of a problem. But you will have to make that determination.

For cheap and simple you could just get a hitch-mounted winch bracket. Of course it will only pull you backwards not forwards, and depending on your use case you may not be willing to sacrifice your departure angle clearance.

For even more cheap and simple you could just get a basic hand-powered "come-along" puller. Not quite as "manly" as an electric winch but almost as good and about 1/10th the price.

That makes sense. That's pretty pricey though. Woundn't it make more sense just to get a $300 winch like this then?

As others have said it's your money; do as you wish.

All that said; how bad were you really stuck?

You can get recovery boards to leave in your toolbox

You can get winches and pull anchors for use when you don't have a tree to strap to and mount them on a receiver plat form so you can remove it when you need to;

You can run an all terrain tire and you will get further than highway tread even on a 2wd truck- and your truck needs tires anyway why not go all terrain if you can find one that has decent road manners (I run firestone destination A/Ts and they have been just fine).

See the thing is- that entire list is all stuff that people hang off of 4x4s anyway!

So, buy recovery boards, buy a winch on a hitch mount, buy A/Ts and leave your stockers out in the garage. See if your truck still gets stuck. Still getting stuck? Upgrade to a 4x4. Sell your truck with the stockers on it, throw the A/Ts and recovery boards and winch on your new 4x4.

If you read off road magazines, most of them will tell you not to go off road by yourself in the first place. None of them will tell you to take a 2x4 off road, but none are going to tell you that a 4x4 simply will not get stuck.

Absolutely. I bought both the "warn" winch and the remote control for it. I'm impressed, for such a small thing running off 6 volts (the roof battery pack) it really pulls hard.

DISCLAIMER: Not necessarily recommending Amazon, but it was the easiest to find example links to.

This is an amazon link to the winch

I'm thinking about picking this up for my '12 SCREW and am wondering what kind of fit issues I may run into and how the build quality is. I'm not normally a big fan of rough country but this seems like an ideal solution to not have to replace the front bumper, keep a stock look and hide the winch. I intend to mount a Warn XD9000i winch that I took off my jeep before selling it.

u/Ricta90 · 1 pointr/snowmobiling

My dad has one of these Warn battery portable winches. He likes to get himself in some crazy places alone for some reason, so he keeps this strapped down to the back of his tunnel. I've never seen him use it yet being I'll shovel him out when we go together, but he claims it's saved him a few times.

u/Bageeka · 1 pointr/Jeep

It's for sale on amazon $270, I'd be more inclined to get it from them because of their return policy. The reviews seem to be mostly positive
