I have had good results with Shoe GOO...I do it this way....

BONUS TIP!! Get yourself a toy crossbow and a ball of yarn and shoot a string across the suspended ceiling canopy
to assist with pulling wire through the high places instead of doing it on a ladder, one tile at a time....
I'm not as young as the kids in the picture so it should fit more like a bubble vest. My biggest concern is that by wearing this it will be causing a lot of wind resistance. The upside is that I will never have a need for condoms again and that should save me a few bucks :/

Perhaps he just replied quickly, but nerf has this really common toy That can pretty easily modified. Perhaps it might take another $10 to modify the fins. But either way....$45 is very steep for this.
They don't shoot very hard, but that frisbee effect does make them fly pretty dang far for their low velocity.
When your boy learns how to bounce the discs off the walls you'll never be safe in cover again.
Also vortex has been around for years so can often be found second hand for cheap. Pyragon is super easy to prime and if you give it a 10disc stick mag instead of the drum it's light enough for a younger kid to enjoy. I saw a bunch of those 10disc stick mags on amazon.co.uk not too long ago for pretty cheap.

For the Marauder it's Ebay or CL, and I don't really recommend it because they have a point, are very hard, and have a tendency to snap.
The Vantages last longer than the Marauder, but still aren't very good.
They don't look as cool, but if you want safe foam melee try Mashoongas or just make your own Boffer.

For small kids?
Products somewhat like this already exist. I bought three wheel light design thingies. The first was as a gift, but the kid's mom refused to install it because it intends for her child to be riding at night. No-go.
I installed the other two on my kids' bikes, but the results were lackluster after a difficult install and fine adjustments.
This kickstarter looks like the same deal, except you create the designs that get displayed.
I'd suggest any number of simple led lights that give your wheels a simple Tron look and only cost maybe $2.
