Tough Love:

Have you tried pretending to be an adult, and waking up when you need to wake up?

Less harsh tip: Alarm Clock-Radios can usually be cranked up louder using the radio's volume knob. So if you are sleeping through your cellular alarm, you might try investing in something old-school, but configurable...

I mean, there is a world of difference between looking at a physical object in the hands of a clock and a screen that is lit from the back. To tell the time of the analog clock you only need to get a general idea of where the arms are pointing. With a digital clock you have to be able to read the digits. If you do get a digital clock that needs to be visible from a far it will have to be big (expensive) and the brightness will have to be high (more energy use).

You are free to look up prices if you would like. 14 inch analog clock for ~$22 dollars. Most digital clocks are $15-20 and no where near that size. This $28 clock is 14 inches and is radio controlled to set itself. I doubt that they make digital clocks that big for less than $30. Consider that digital clocks also come with software and other features not necessary in many situations which raise the price of the clocks. Here is a digital clock with a 7 inch display. It is $300 (from the same people with the $30 analog clock).

Digital clocks have more moving parts and include a screen (which must be lit). I think there is no reason to believe that analog clocks would use anywhere near the same amount of energy as digital clocks.

You can verify this for yourself if you want. This small digital takes 2 double A batteries and this large 18" analog takes 1 double A and even includes a thermometer and hygrometer.

One wall clock could probably fit quite a few mice.

OTOH, they could be not numbers at all. Maybe they're pictures of birds or something

I have this one and absolutely love it. It's a little bit on the pricey side, but it has several nice features:

-- Clear LED display

-- The "buttons" are not actual buttons, they're more like sensors that feel when your hand touches

-- Has a light that indicates who is on-roll, as well as can be programmed to make a "beep" sound when you signal the end of your turn

-- Easy to program

-- Sturdy

You can find older dell LCD screens for next to nothing (Particularly the 4:3 ones). They aren't too big... might be worth having a look. I think dave put some type of plexiglass in front of the screen for protection. Otherwise, you could build a similar but smaller and put a big ass clock in it, like this absolute unit here:

It looks like you can set a countdown timer remotely, which might be perfect for your application

Here's the clock and it's for a pretty good price.

The roman numerals were bought separately and painted metallic black in case you want to use these too.

Btw, if you're using the template, set the image size to 90% before printing and it'll be a perfect fit :)

We have a clock from La Crosse Technology similar to this one and it sets to the atomic clock via radio signal. For an inexpensive clock, it's pretty nice. We've had it for years and whenever I check, it always matches time.is perfectly, to the second.

u/TurnbullFL · 2 pointsr/batteries

Found it in english.

Mechanism looks like your basic one found in almost all battery powered clocks. Even if an Alkaline damaged it, a replacement costs about $2.

A picture shows it with a Duracell, which I don't think come any way but alkaline.

I got This for Christmas. Its <$50 and I think its pretty cool to have on my desk. Literally!

u/LaBrainwashed · 2 pointsr/chess

Is your budget for a clock $50?

I've seen this type of clock before, and while I won't put it down, I will say it's very uncommon to see at tournaments.

Generally you want a more recognizable clock that others will also know how to set if you lend them. For a $50 budget, I'd highly recommend the DGT North America or the ZMF-II timer (you can shop around for different color combos). I'm willing to vouch that these clocks can withstand light abuse
(dropping/traveling/kids/bughouse).

Generally one clock will have nearly all the features you'll need: one time control formats, two or more time control formats, delay, increment, etc.

I have this clock. Basic, simple, cheap

Oh look, I answered my own question. Typed "large atomic clock" into Amazon. Looks like it is made by LaCrosse and is cheaper on Amazon.

u/Dew_what · 1 pointr/camping

I have this one. The LED thing is an optional display that doesn’t have to be on. Best part is it runs on a portable battery pack with USB outputs. We used in our family tent last summer and provided circulation and subtle white noise. Kids loved it.

I have this one and it's awesome. Can take a whole bagel, just in one slot, and has settings specific to frozen things and bagels.

Here's a great clock for the wall.
