I think at 6'4" you may find a basic 10/22 to be on the smaller side for you. Doesn't mean you can't/shouldn't get it. Plus it's trivial to drop some $ on a better stock. At one point they made a 50th anniversary edition that had an upgraded stock and sights. I don't know if it's still sold, but if you can find one it's a very good option to go with. That edition was designed with appleseed in mind, so it should be exactly what you want from a rifle.

10/22s are pretty forgiving with ammo. Try different brands and see what works for you, but most stuff is fine. A few states don't allow online orders of ammo, but most do. You might find better prices online, or you might be better off with a local store. Depends on luck and location.

The gun generally comes with 1 10 round magazine. You may find better deals online, but they're relatively cheap anyway (some guns have very expensive mags). There's a large variety of magazine sizes and shapes available. I live in a ban state, so I don't have advice beyond the 10 rounders. I've got a thing that clamps 3 10 round mags together that I find very helpful, but not really relevant if you don't have that limitation.

Just buy the tech sights. The 10/22 sights are worthless (excluding the 50th edition).

The basic 10/22s don't have any sling attachments (50th does). If you did upgrade the stock, cause you're a larger guy, you could easily get an aftermarket one that would accept a sling easier.

If you're just getting started shooting, cheap ear muffs/plugs and eye pro are fine and perfectly safe. If you get more serious, there's lots of options to blow money on. I use (and am a big fan of) ESS Crossbow and Peltor Tactical Sport. Electronic ear muffs are especially nice in a competition or training context.

You'll definitely want a bag or case to carry the gun. For events like appleseed you'll also want a chamber flag (bright colored cheap plastic flag you stick in the gun to show empty). Unless your state has specific legal requirements, storage is up to you. I'm pretty sure 10/22s (all rugers I think) come with a action lock, if you want to use it.

Sorry for the giant text wall. Hope it helps.

  1. No break in period.

  2. I like to use milspec CLP to clean all my firearms. G96 CLP is one of the only milspec CLPs out there, Breakfree/Safariland is not milspec and although is probably a good product, didn't go through the stringent military tests. As far as lubing, a light coat of lube (I use Lucas Gun Oil, but any decent oil will do), where I'm supposed to. Brownell's has a good 4 part YouTube video on cleaning and caring for your 10/22. It's a good start, but with a takedown you'll also want to know how to set the barrel tension screw (it should be in the included manual as well), I don't have a link offhand but if you Google it, you'll find something good. Only needs to be done once, but good to know.

  3. Tools, I just keep an Otis MSR kit in my bag with brushes for all my calibers (22, 223/556, 308, 9mm, etc). I keep a needle tip bottle filled with G96 CLP, along with the Otis MSR kit in my range bag, along with a bleeding control kit (never know when you or someone at the range can be hit with an accidental discharge). If I can't fix the firearm at the range with the tools at hand, then I take it home (unless there's a stuck round, which is something more pressing to resolve and I'll usually ask the RSO for help is I don't have a long wooden dowel with me).

  4. Ammo, it should shoot it all, but for quality low end ammo, I like Federal Automatch. If I want to spend more, I grab CCI MiniMags, if I'm shooting my target 22 bolt action, I shoot Eley Match. Your 10/22 should be good with lower/mid-range ammo...don't waste money on high end match ammo, especially for plinking.

Small gun related tip.

Loctite is your BEST friend. Anything that unscrews, or loosens with a thread on it, should get a small dab. Purple is lighter than Blue (Red is the strongest). If you're worried about the strength of the screw head, use Purple.

Use screwdrivers that are "hollow ground". Meaning, for a flat bit, they should not be shaped like normal screwdrivers. A normal screwdriver actually usually looks more like a wedge than an straight block being inserted into the screw head. Here's a nice picture:

You don't have to run out and buy fancy screwdrivers. Grab a metal file, and carefully file the sides of a cheap bit so it is more square. Keeps your screws pretty.

Last bit of advice, Dremels work really REALLY quick. Be careful!

You can put a trigger stop yourself if you'd like, that will reduce the overtravel. Check this out:

Have fun, stay safe!

For stocks, if you want a more traditional looking rifle the Hogue Rubber Over Molded Stock is a very popular stock.

For a more tactical stock the TAPCO Intrafuse T6 is another popular stock, but be aware there are two versions of the stock. One for standard diameter barrels and one for bull barrels. Another tactical stock similar to the first one but with a better pistol grip is the ATI strike force taclite stock.

A popular newer stock is magpul's Hunter X-22 stock

For websites I would say Amazon, ebay, midway and the manufacturers site for some after market parts like bolts.

This may help you a bit, here is a run down of my build:

Stock: Tapco intrefuse bull barrel version

Acc: Magpul AFG Angled Forend Grip

Barrel: Tactical Solutions threaded bull barrel

Bolt: Kidd bolt and charging handle

Receiver: factory Ruger receiver

Trigger assembly: Ruger BX-trigger

Then for the odds and ends:

Bolt buffer pin is made by kidd, the two pins that hold the trigger assembly to the receiver are standard Ruger parts, the barrel V-block is made by tactical solutions and the take down and barrel retainer screws are made buy Volquartsen.

Wow, that is a cool set up. I never thought about running nodak/tech/peep sights with those rings. What a great idea. Can you post some more pics of it zoomed out and more aiming down it? Maybe a video? What a cool set up. I wonder if it would work with a low profile riser, so you can get your fingers in there to adjust it. The only way this could be better is if the mounts were QD....... Is there a brand that does this similarly with QD?

Very impressed. I like it for the price. And once it's sighted in it's SUPER accurate. I was shooting empty shotgun shells off the top of a cardboard box at like 20-25 yards... And I'm no pro... Lol.

I'm a little late to the party, but I had the exact same issue. I solved it by getting a 2 piece rail and only installing the front piece and put the red dot on that. It cowitnesses perfectly with tech sights and the trs 25. This is the rail I got: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00162OPOS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It looks like it'd work, but your rifle should have come with a little baggie with allen wrenches in it, and one of those is specifically for adjusting the sights.

If you don't have this baggie, a full allen key set isn't much more than the tool you linked price-wise (and a full set is definitely more useful, as you'll need an allen key to take the rifle down for cleaning).

for the 10/22, does he have a magazine preference? Ruger offers 10, 15, and 25-round magazines. can't have too many magazines. Also bolt release, magazine release, and trigger upgrades are popular. might be tough to get anything trigger-related for $50 though.

Ammo if you can find it. if he likes to target shoot, match ammo might be fun. and that brings up targets. if shoots cheap paper ones, maybe get him some shoot-n-c targets.

If he travels with his guns, maybe a nicer case?

Happy cake day!

Well, I really didn't like the camo synthetic stock mine came with, so I swapped an 18" Keystone Arms threaded bull barrel onto it, dropped it in a Hightower Armory 90/22 stock, and threw a Bushnell TRS-25 on. I wanted to go with a 16.5" barrel, but in this conversion stock, it has to be the 18" barrel to meet the 26" OAL limit for non-NFA rifles. It's a blast, and it'll be even more fun when I finally get my suppressor in for it (over 11 months waiting).

Buy something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BNLQQBQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002IOANI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And follow this guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vqOzfSex94

You will not regret having sling studs on your rifle. I installed 3 studs on each of my carbines, forend left (sling), forend bottom (bipod), buttstock top left (sling). The tri-lock sling swivels are easy enough to take off for hasty sling. The slings I bought came with a clip on the buttstock end, but it was much too loud for hunting.

It's a 30y/o Black Warrior stock. same as this one. Precursor to the Butler Creek folder, but this one has a plastic cheek weld area on it too.

There's an upper plastic vented heat shield over the barrel that covers out to the forward end.

Front barrel band has a rail mount top & side and a slot for a sling on the other side. Like this one, but not from Ali Express I usually have a bipod on the bottom mount, but I've been dealing with pesky critters in the yard so I put the streamlight on there for the time being.

Don't know who makes the peep through silver scope rings. Might be these, but they are wide oval apertures for easy iron sight use. Scope is a Simmons 3-9x Works fine for a rimfire.

Accuracy with a .22 is ammo dependant for the most part. Buy match grade ammo. Or you can pick through and separate bricks of 1000 with one of these and see what gets you the best groups.

Any of the rails that have the center cut out to allow use of the sights will be blocked by the cross-bolt on a mount.

That's true for the X-ring as well (you cannot see the sights with a scope or other optic installed).

To use that functionality, you need a QD mount for your optic, so that you can take the optic on and off quickly, and then be able to see through the rail.

Another option would be those super-high see through scope rings that they sell for old-timey hunting setups. You'd need to get taller sights on the barrel though, and they really suck to shoot because you're down to chin weld. Definitely a last-resort option that I do not recommend.

As for the TRS25: It's a cheap optic. I really don't get the circle-jerky nature of it on reddit. I've got one now (and owned a few over the years), along with the TRS35, a couple other red dots, and various scopes. Does it work? Yeah. Is it good? No. You're being smart by saving your money.

Long Range Shooting Handbook

Ryan Cleckner, former Ranger sniper, covers long range shooting (obviously), but the vast majority of the material is applicable to any kind of rifle shooting. He goes into a little history, terminology, choosing and setting up your rifle and gear, rifle maintenance, ballistics, calculations and scope adjustments, shooting technique, and a bunch more.

Despite the 'long range' label, he doesn't go overboard on the minutia of reading wind or correcting for Coriolis force. He has a follow up book ("Advanced Long Range Shooting") for the more esoteric stuff. It's all written for a layman, and anyone with two brain cells to rub together could understand it. Essentially, you can read the book with no previous knowledge and come out with a great baseline for getting started with rifles.
