Shin Megami Tensei IV and its sequel Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse. You may be familiar with the franchise already, the popular Persona 5 is a part of it.

  • Its an amazing game that sucked me in with its challenge and incorporation of all kinds of lore and mythical creatures as your enemies/allies from Norse/Chinese/Gaelic/Japanese/Islamic myth, to the more known Christian angels and Greek myth.

  • It's a very similar game to Pokemon in that you have to capture (negotiate) the pokemon (demons) and train them to learn new moves and then evolve (fuse 2 of them together and combine their moves together into a new demon) then catch more demons and repeat. All demons are weak to certain move types, but instead of Pokemon's 17 types, there are only 8.

  • It also has a morality system, but instead of being the standard Good vs Evil, its Law vs Chaos. So instead of games like Infamous and Mass Effect where you become either Jesus or the Anti-Christ by the end of the game, you become a Totalitarian Dictator where the word of God is Law, or an Anarchist where its Survival of the Fittest and Rule by Power. So you have to take a path in the middle of the two extremes to get things done. No other series really does this, and its really interesting.

  • As tired as the expression is, It is like Dark Souls in that its challenging, and expects you to step up to the plate and learn the game, and if you dont, you wont make it out of the first area. But as soon as you do, the rest of the game is much simpler and more fun than anything else, and easily the most fun I've had with a new game franchise in a long, long time.

  • All the cut scenes are fully voiced as well, for what it's worth, as well as being able to transfer your save data to the Sequel for a bonus.

  • Its also easily a 50+ hour game, so it will last you a while.

My other big recommendation is Bravely Default, and its sequel Bravely Second. The combat is also the most impressive thing about the game, and its hard to explain, so try the free demo for either game on the eShop. If you do try the Demo, and beat it, it gives you a bonus if you play the full game. Both are fantastic games, and are throwbacks to classic Final Fantasy games of the NES and SNES era. If you do try either demo and beat it, it will unlock a bonus in its own full game.

  • Just like SMT IV above, All the cut scenes are fully voiced as well, for what it's worth, as well as being able to transfer your save data to the Sequel for a bonus.

Hori Screen Protectors - easy to apply and gives you the assurance of not scratching your screen.

Better Stylus - the one that comes with the 3ds is fine but I find getting a better stylus works wonders when playing a stylus heavy games. Rocketfish sells stylus similar to the ones that came with the dsi xl in packs of 2 and I think can still be found at bestbuy.

Carrying case - if you like bringing your 3ds around for streetpass then putting it in a carrying case and tossing it into a bag will prevent wear and damaged to the system itself. I'm currently using a Hori carrying case and I find it pretty handy and it can hold 3 games.

Bigger SD card - if you plan on downloading from the e-shop then a nice 32gb sd card is great.

Assist grip - coolclown makes a nice assist grip that I find really comfortable if you plan on using your 3ds for long periods of time.

Crystal clear case - some people don't like the extra bulk but I like them for protecting the outside of the 3ds. If you purchased a limited edition 3ds then a hori tpu casing doesn't add too much bulk and protects your handheld.

Hope I'm not too late, but as someone who enjoys fantasy games and shooters, I'd recommend the following:

  • Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (a mature soldier-spy type game - thematically similar to Battlefield/Call of Duty)
  • Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (b/c he likes Dragon Age)
  • Fire Emblem Awakening (b/c he is interested in Persona Q and League of Legends)
  • Shin Megami Tensei IV (b/c he is interested in Persona Q - Persona and SMT use the same battle system in different storylines/settings)

    ____
    Recommendations for no particular reason

  • Mario Kart 7 - the quintessential 3DS game for all ages, every 3ds should have one.
  • Super Mario 3D Land - difficult at times, but always fun, I always thought "Mario games are for kids" until I played this game.
  • Rune Factory 4 - If he likes RPGs, he'll love this.
  • Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan - Persona Q was modeled after this game, but I'm listing it down here because he may feel more at home in the world of Shin Megami Tensei IV listed above.

    __
PS. I see a lot of people mentioning Pokemon, but if he hasn't shown interest in Pokemon by now he may not like it. It seemed like the perfect game for me but I just couldn't enjoy it half as much as everyone else does.

If you're getting your kid a 3DS or 2DS, make sure you buy a charger for it! I don't know if anybody told you, but the 3DS systems, for some reason, don't come with a charger. Also, if you're going to get him a 3DS, make sure you get him a New 3DS, instead of the regular 3DS, since most newer games that he might play don't run so well on the old 3DS. As for getting him a 2DS or a 3DS... It depends. The only pros to the 2DS are the fact that it doesn't have 3D, it doesn't have hinges, it's MUCH cheaper, and he might like the flat design more if he plays on tablets a lot. However, the New 3ds has the option of either 2D or 3D, loads up games faster/has a better CPU, and has a better battery life. I would recommend the 2DS.

Some games I recommend are Mario Kart 7, Donkey Kong Country, Kirby Triple Deluxe, Super Mario 3D land, Yoshi's New Island, Scribblenauts Unlimited, and if he has an interest in Pokemon, get him Sun or Moon when he's around 7ish.

Pretty much any starter kit is just cheap crap. I'd advise you to just spend a little extra and buy quality.

Styli. Basically the only spare bulk pack available at the moment, hence the long shipping wait.

Car charger I would instead buy either a portable power bank and 3DS USB cable or a USB car charger like this and a 3DS USB cable. A power bank would be a good bit more expensive but is really nice to have if you have a lot of electronics you bring with you. Here's a pretty good one.

Great card case holder.

Budget but good carrying cases: 1, 2, 3, 4.

Yes, its more expensive to go this route. But I promise you that you will be happy you did. I bought those crappy starter kits for my GBC, GBA, and DS. The stuff was low quality and generally just doesn't last. I bought stuff for my 3DS similar to what I've linked here and have been much happier with the quality and make

To try to summarize the 3DS line up :

the original models (3DS/XL) is the older "slower processor" model, so is the 2ds which is flat in design and doesn't open like a shell.

I would avoid those all together, actually you won't find them new in stores any way, except for the 2ds which I also would avoid despite its cheap $79.99 price tag, it has some drawbacks of a small screen, single low volume speaker and of course the slower processor, I really find the 2ds only suitable towards children for durability.

the newer models (New 3DS/ New 3DS XL) are the ones you want, they're faster, with better 3D effects and eye tracking, and a small nub added to controls.

I believe the SNES edition you mention is the New 3DS XL model here :

https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-New-3DS-XL-Super-Mario/dp/B076KRDRQG

See on box the (new) word above Nintendo, that's what you want, and I beleive this particular SNES edition is regularly on discount so you'll be able to grab it (it went down to $99 temporarily last month) so keep an eye out for it.

In addition to those New models, Nintendo launched last year the (New 2DSXL) which has everything the New 3DS models have, except for 3D effect which some people don't use or care about.

The New 2DSXL is an excellent choice, it is heavily supported by Nintendo in different colors and packaged games, and is constantly on sale if you keep an eye for it.

So my advice is you should choose between a (New 2DSXL) or (New 3DS XL SNES Edition) , either choices are brilliant, just get a feel of what he would like more and if he really cares about 3D effect.

Other answers :

All DS games work on the 3Ds.

The Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS are the same I think, but it's still a totally different amazing experience on 3DS to play on the go and in hand held.

This is the SD card that I got. It is 32 GB. For the price difference between 16 and 32 (~$4), I thought 32 was worth it. I did not have to reformat it or anything. It was great. No problems thus far.

If you're interested, I have 13 GB left and have installed:

  • Monster Hunter Gen
  • Paper Jam
  • ACNL
  • Fire Emblem Awakening
  • Fantasy Life
  • Rune Factory 4
  • Mario Kart 7
  • Bravely Default (and Second)
  • Story of Seasons
  • Harvest Moon: A New Beginning
  • Pokemon Y
  • Happy Home Designers
  • Random stuff that doesn't consume much data (pushmo, SNES converts, pocket jockey, etc.)

For 10-20 games, I'm inclined to say you might be more satisfied with a 32 GB SD. Hope that helps! Happy gaming :)

Unless you want to play GBA games, don't bother with a DS Lite. You will only regret it later and a 3DS or 2DS can be found fairly cheaply.

If you are concerned about battery life and maybe even accessories, the 3DS may be the best choice for you. The default battery life of the 3DS XL may be a little better, but you can buy 3rd party battery packs like the Nyko Power Pak+ that you will find many on this subreddit swear by and it is very cheap for the extra punch it gives. I wish one were available for my XL, but there are no better battery options (within a reasonable price range) for the XL.

I like my XL personally, but it sounds like you don't really like it and that decision is definitely up to you. I found the regular 3DS was too small for me (I owned a near-launch console) and I didn't like the build quality of it. Specifically the Start, Select, and Home buttons.

I cannot speak for the 2DS, but I don't know if I would let the Mono speaker be a deal breaker for you. The speakers on the 3DS and 3DS XL are fairly terrible anyway. I've always thought the ones on my DS Lite have sounded better personally.

i have the standard 3DS, and yeah, ive never had any issues finding the sweet spot as far as the 3d slider goes. as long as im holding it properly, the 3d is pretty flawless with most games, so i rarely turn it off. there ARE some games though where it feels like they get too concerned with the 3D, and theres not really any rhyme or reason as to why one thing pops out so much farther than another. just so long as it looks sufficiently 3D, the devs seem happy. as for the bigger battery, i picked up this guy and its some of the best money ive ever spent. it makes the 3ds a little bit fatter, and a little bit heavier, but it actually makes it more comfortable to hold. it also feels a little bit rubbery so its easier to grip than the smooth plastic back the 3ds comes with. the only issue is it no longer fits into the circlepad pro, or the charging cradle, but its really easy to switch back to the old battery if i need to. if you've got a 3ds, pick up this battery. it pretty much completely changed my relationship with my 3ds. instead of constantly worrying about battery power, i hardly ever need to think about it beyond remembering to charge it every night. and i think they actually do make a charging cradle for the extended battery if you're feeling like Mr. Moneybags.

For my "XL", I purchased this Crystal Case, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0093W7KG8/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 , I was only interested in the casing feature, but the fact that it felt comfortable and "stiffened" (not sure if that's a good word to use" the screen hinges made this purchase non-regrettable.

I'm not sure if this company has the exact casing for the 3DS, but I recommend looking at some YouTube videos of Crystal Casing, and hope for a video that helps you.

u/Votius · 3 pointsr/3DS

Hori TPU case for sure, they are great and wont scratch up the 3ds like other cases. This is the hori tpu case i have, the previously linked case is a harder tpu plastic.

skins you can get lots of places, depends on what you like. I have the zelda 3ds XL and it looks great through the clear hori tpu case, decals/ skins also come though great.

as for flash carts on the 3ds, read this thread from this subreddit

edit for cases

u/mtama22 · 5 pointsr/3DS

The clear Hori case is nice. I have the red one with my red 3ds xl, but it will keep the outside of your console safe. The Hori carrying case is nice too, but only holds 6 games (7 if you keep one in the 3ds). I have this one:

http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Retro-Mario-Pouch-Nintendo-Black/dp/B00DWXUYN0/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1393959834&sr=1-1&keywords=hori+mario+case

Surprisingly it's $2 cheaper than the regular. The 3ds with the protective cover fits in this case, but it's a tight fit.

Why don't you like screen protectors? I have screen protectors on all my electronics with screens, but I follow a long process to get them on. I don't even notice my screen protectors anymore. I don't know about the circular bumpers, but I'm also worried about scratching up my bottom screen with the stylus. Good luck.

I was in a similar situation as you when I picked up one of Nintendo's refurbished N3DS systems last month. I was coming from a N3DS XL and had the Cyber Gadget grip for that; which I loved. Unfortunately, I found that tracking down non-XL N3DS accessories was not very easy. Additionally, I found that the Cyber Gadget version of the non-XL grip was outrageously expensive for what it was and couldn't be found anywhere from a non-3rd party seller. I checked just about everywhere from Amazon to eBay to PlayAsia, but no luck. I even tried Amazon Japan but no luck there either. I eventually just bit the bullet and decided to purchase one of the cheap ones on Amazon (this one). It isn't perfect, but for the price, I would buy it again and recommend it. It does its job of making the system easier to hold for longer play sessions which is exactly what I needed. Hope this helps!

I found a really good awesome cases on Amazon.ca.

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01G3X6ZME/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Super legit case. I love how the case is secured and connected by hinges(I have two New 3DS XL and two New 3DS systems. Some hinges of the systems are more loose, there seems to always be a variance or play) But this case makes your 3DS really sturdy and protects it.

They also have it for the New 3DS XL....

EDIT: Also for pouches and traveling, just buy any 3DS case and it will fit/suffice. I use this https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01J75ZEHM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00DWXUYN0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and this one for at home https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00VB0I8U2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is the battery I bought. The fourth picture gives the best idea of what it's like in real life. It adds a good bit of bulk to the 3ds (which is a positive, in my opinion) and probably wouldn't fit the circle pad pro. As for the battery itself, I can charge it once a week, play 15 hours easily, and have it on with the wifi enabled the whole time without it even hitting the red.

A portable charger would probably be easier to get rather than a bigger battery that is also compatible with the circle pad pro.

u/Negat1veCreep · 2 pointsr/3DS

The charging cradle is great, unfortunately it leaves you unable to put a case on the new 3DS. If you want to protect it from scratches, you can use a skin. There are clear skins if you want to preserve the look of your 3DS. If you want to change things up a bit, you could buy a skin with a design, or design your own. I made this one at decalgirl.com. If you don't want a full skin, there are some cool decals to be found on ebay and etsy.

If you want a pouch, most made for the older 3ds XL will fit the new one. There are simple ones like this from Hori. It is currently available in all black or with various graphics (Zelda, Mario, NES controller), and it also has room for 6 game cartridges. If you want something fancier, there is the popular city slicker and gear pouch pro from sfbags, or you could get something custom from etsy.

As for screen protectors, the new 3ds xl has the same size screens as the older model, so any screen protectors that fit the old xl will work.

u/trainercatlady · 1 pointr/3DS

You mentioned that the TNP case has a tendency to scratch the systems up, but I was considering picking up a Skinomi set for the Galaxy edition I have coming in next week. Do you think that, coupled with the TNP case would be a good fit? I've got the Hori Duraflex on my Pikachu 3DS XL and while I do love it, it has had a tendency to pick up dye from the carrying case it's in and has started to yellow around the edges, so I've been considering other options. And, as you've noted, the rubber does tend to absorb shock better, as well as resist scratching much better as well, but the fact that it doesn't fit snugly on the N3DSXL worries me. Am I being paranoid?

u/ohgodimsodumb · 2 pointsr/3DS

I bought one from amazon, and it was decent quality, but it came with a few minor dings which I suspect could turn into quite a few more over time.

I had simultaneously purchased a Hori cover from amazon, and it is head and shoulders above the no-name aluminium one. The Hori feels semi-rubbery, and hugs the system really well, but was also relatively easy to take off. The generic aluminium one from amazon made me concerned about potential scratches from the gaps between the system and the case and it didn't seem to grip my device really well, especially the cover for the top.

u/SF218 · 4 pointsr/3DS

If you want maximum protection for your 3DS, the PDP NERF Armor is hands down your best bet. Keep in mind that it does make the 3DS a bit bulkier, but it essentially doubles as a carrying case.

3DS: http://www.amazon.com/PDP-3DS-NERF-Armor-Blue-Nintendo/dp/B005VO5ZU0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1372122295&sr=8-2

If you are generally very good about not damaging your system, and just want to minimize things like scratches and whatnot, I like the eForCity crystal case. It does the job without adding any extra bulk to your 3DS.

Heard Tales of Abyss is a GREAT Rpg, and so is Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei 4 (these are things I've heard.)Mario Kart 7, Animal Crossing (I know you said you like RPG games more, but i really like these games.) Any of the DS Pokemon games are pretty darn good and Tomorrow Mario & Luigi Dream Team Is coming out!

I bought the Skinomi Full Body Screen Protector for my 3DS. I read a lot of the reviews and heard mostly positive stuff. A very small number of people claimed that it could damage the 3DS, but from my experience, possible damage is not an issue. Although application was tedious because of a lack of a diagram, all of the panels applied evenly and without much issue. Now my entire 3DS is protected and has a nice light sheen to it.

If you just care about the screens, then there's also a Skinomi variant that just has the protectors for the screens. A lot of people like the HORI protectors too, although personally I can't say whether or not they are good. Hope this helps, and I hope you find what you are looking for.

u/ruemeridian · 1 pointr/3DS

HORI also makes a Duraflexi TPU case for the n3DS for what it's worth (which is also clear, but textured on the inside giving it an ever so slightly cloudy appearance), not just screen protectors.

And if you're the kind of person who is into pouches, this Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate pouch is pretty awesome I think.

u/Chicken_McFaggots · 1 pointr/3DS

I bought these 2 items a long time ago and they've been awesome, very worthwhile purchases.

3DS XL Case (This looks awesome on my Red Pokemon Y 3DS): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0093W7KG8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Carrying Case (Fits 3DS XL with crystal case):

I recommend these to anyone looking for some good products at an affordable price.

Edit: Also, my crystal case hasn't turned yellow and I've had it for a year, so I recommend this over the Hori case + it's way cheaper.

u/NeoMegamanX · 1 pointr/3DS

I just noticed the same issue last week and I ordered the HORI screen protector.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008HPAXZ2/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The only reason I didn't install a protector when I got my 3ds around 2 months ago is because I was worried it would decrease the screen sensivity, I just installed it and tried Final Fantasy Theatrhythm, and it worked perfectly P: too bad I wait so long I have a couple of small scratches on my system.

Also my reason to go with HORI is because they have a really nice applying process :) look for it on youtube it's super easy and it works great.

u/iwrestledasharkonce · 4 pointsr/3DS

I just got this one in the mail.

Checklist:

  • reputable brand
  • Unscrupulous brands may sell very small cards and label them as very large cards; some brands also spontaneously dump their information and stop working. Read the reviews! Brands commonly sold in physical stores such as SanDisk and Kensington are usually trustworthy.
  • reputable seller
  • If you're buying on Amazon, make sure it ships from and is sold by Amazon.com, not SUPER AWESOME ELECTRONICS EXPRESS. If you're elsewhere on the web, make sure it's a very reputable online dealer (TigerDirect, newegg) or has a physical store counterpart (BestBuy.com, Radioshack.com). I'd definitely recommend buying online from a web-only retailer; the prices are MUCH better online.
  • 32 GB or lower
  • It's possible to go higher than 32 GB, but you have to do some special formatting tricks and 32 GB is a ludicrous amount of space anyway. Consider that a very large game still only takes maybe 2 GB; you need 16 very large games to fill that puppy. 32 GB is totally fine and pretty cheap.

    Other notes:

The "class" of the card refers to the read/write speed. Apparently it doesn't make any difference in gameplay and the system itself, but when you transfer files from your SD card to your computer (transferring to a different SD card or uploading a screenshot to Facebook for example) the higher the class, the less you have to wait. I'd recommend a class 4; it seems to be the most common class and works just fine for me.

I'm getting a New 3DS XL for X-mas so I was in the same boat as you, on google/reddit/amazon/youtube I was looking to see what I should get. Here's what I ultimately decided on:

u/WynterTwylight · 1 pointr/3DS

I use something like this

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q5BAIFU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

And it's absolutely awesome. I have a normal New 3DS XL (So I can't sympathize with the special edition crisis). But after getting a mean scratch akin to yours I bought a skin like this. Hope that helps!

u/Exavion · 4 pointsr/3DS

I use an Anker (here) with one of these. I've never done a full set of charge cycles on one Anker charge, but it should charge my XL 5-7 times before the Anker itself needs a charge. I usually share the power with my phone though.

It's also worth noting I use the 1st gen Anker - I've had it for 2 years and it's still going strong. This one looks even better - especially the fact that it can detect what current to send to your device (mine has a 1A and 2A port)

This shouldn't cost you more than $40-50 total. I'm seeing the 13000 mAh battery at $30 right now, and the cable is about $6 shipped.

u/ShaikhAndBake · 3 pointsr/3DS

If you haven't bought it yet, I'd go with this only because it's new and cheaper. Of course I'd say the Zelda one looks cooler but if you're ok with any edition, this is a better deal. $150 for a brand new N3DS XL + free Super Mario Kart

u/sk00msk00m · 1 pointr/3DS

The original is pretty much perfect for my hands. They’re just slightly bigger now. As for the XL, it’s just uncomfortable for me since it’s hard to hit the bumpers and it takes a little more work just to multitask (lowering my hand to get to the dpad, add more pressure to face buttons. I mean, I use my middle fingers just to use the bumpers sometimes!)

Besides that, I need a new battery anyway. What if I get one of the bulky ones so my hands won’t feel crammed together and making my hand position feel more natural? Maybe this one? It’s not too big

I use an Incipio offGRID IP-679 along with this cable. I got the IP-679 as a work anniversary gift even though I knew I'd probably never end up using it and there was nothing else on the list I would remotely even want. I'm glad I did though, because it lasts forever. It's just a generic USB charger so it's not meant to attach to the 3DS but it's smaller than my iPhone 5s so it's super easy to pick up the charger and 3DS in one hand if I want to move to a different room. The cable I linked to is almost 4 feet long (about 44 inches) so your 3DS doesn't have to sit right next to the charger. You have plenty of wiggle room.

u/Pebcaks · 1 pointr/3DS

I hope I'm not too late but i was looking for the same screen protector three days ago when I got my new MM 3DS. Amazon was sold out just like you said but they still have this one in stock.

It's the Hori one for the old 3DS XL, however since the screen size are the same it fits like a glove. I hope this saves you the scavenging.

u/star-storm · 1 pointr/3DS

So in the Shin Megami Tensei 'main series', Shin Megami Tensei IV (SMTIV) is the fourth game without any significant story ties to the other main series games.

In terms of SMTIV, there are two games: SMTIV the original game, and SMTIV Apocalypse, its sequel. The sequel involves some story elements from the original game, so you probably want to play the original game first.

Here's some basic info: both of them are turn-based RPGs, and the difficulty level is rather high compared to most of the other games on the 3DS. Especially the beginning of SMTIV. Be prepared to die, maybe often. Also, the story is pretty important in this series, so I would suggest playing them in order. The games are both very good, but Apocalypse might be slightly better? I think it's just personal preference. Either way, I'd play both.

Aside from the screen protector they are all really optional

You can go with any screen protector, I got like the Hori ones

32GB SD card

r4ids.cn R4i Gold(the firmware may not be updated when shipped so you may need a pre v4.5 3DS or DS Lite to update it) and Micro SD to hold the DS roms/saves/r4 firmware. 8gb is plenty

For Cases

Full 3DS Case or This Travel Case

A circle pad pro XL if you buy a game that supports it is nice, other things like a 3DS usb charger cable + external battery pack if you need the juice for trips are handy.

But aside from the screen protector which I highly recommend the rest are optional.

u/Sorcci · 2 pointsr/3DS

skin protector

I used skin protector to keep my 3ds in pristine condition. I bought my 3ds in 2015, and attached the skin protector since day 1 and the paint never flakes.

If transparent skin protector was too plain for you, you can choose many skin designs from decalgirl to keep the paint intact.

Alternatively, buy 3ds grip. Not only does it protect your 3ds like case does, but it also provides grip comfort for playing. I used dreamgear silicone grip for 3ds. It is bulky, but it protects your device well.

I have the same issue and almost had to stop playing my O3DSXL until I got a Circle Pad Pro LL (the LL is Japan's XL) and used that until I upgraded to the N3DS and N3DSXL and encountered the problem all over again... The only grip I can use for the N3DS is the Cyber Gadget N3DS Grip and for the N3DSXL it's the Cyber Gadget N3DSLL Grip V2. Extra bonuses for the Cyber Gadget grips are that they're easy to put on and remove, don't scratch your console like some of the hard plastic grips, and have a little door on the back that you can open to see two game card slots so you can carry a couple extra physical games with you.

Edit: Another bonus is you'll never have to take off the Cyber Gadget grips for normal use. All slots are open including the game card, headphone, stylus, IR port, charging port, and heck even the charm attach slot is open!

u/anaharae · 1 pointr/3DS

I imported this Hori 3DS Case. It fits perfectly, and holds 3 games. The material feels nice, and it is small enough to fit in a small purse.

When I want to carry more games and an extra stylus, I use the Retro Mario Case. It has a strap to keep the console secure, holds 6 games, and a long stylus.

u/Level44EnderShaman · 3 pointsr/3DS

There's a virtual ton of popular cheap USB-to-DSi/3DS cables you can buy off of Amazon from numerous sellers and manufacturers. They tend to be inexpensive, too.

Personally, I recommend the GAMETECH Micro-B to DSi/3DS adapter plug over such cables, myself. It's a small converter adapter you can buy that plugs into the male end of any Micro-B USB cable to convert it for use with the system. It hax a small loop on the end to thread a loop through to attach it to your keychains or whatever you might carry your USB powerbank or adapter with.

The average cost is $8 and some change on Amazon, and it works like a charm with every Micro-B USB cable I have in my house. Right now it's also got Prime shipping on it, and while it's ground shipping, it still gets to you within three days or so. I swear by this adapter.

The TakeCase is pretty awesome!

The people who make it have done several giveaways on this subreddit and they stand by their product as well. I had an issue with the zipper on mine after 6 months and they replaced it, no questions asked.

For a travel case, it's by far the nicest I've had.

There is this soft plastic case I use for my Zelda 3DS XL. Link it is really nice, super high quality, and if you search the subreddit you may be able to find someone with pictures of one on their Pikachu XL. I seem to recall that being a major factor in me purchasing it. It's amazing and I have had no issues with it vs. peeling issues when using a cheap hard plastic case on a regular 3ds in the past.

Edit: It says hard cover but it's pretty flexible so I consider it 'soft' plastic.

u/Romiress · 3 pointsr/3DS

What accessories would I recommend to a new 3DS owner?

Honestly? None. You can do just fine without any accessories at all. I use three different accessories, but none are mandatory. There's no absolute must-haves.

Case, all systems: I've never felt the need for a hard case, so I stick to the club nintendo pouch for carrying my N3DS. This pouch will hold all sizes of 3DS without issue, and isn't intended to be tossed around. Basically, putting it in the pouch will keep surface scratches/pen marks/etc from ruining the 3DS's outer surface if it's in a backpack side pouch or anything. Since the club nintendo one isn't availible anymore, keep in mind that you can use an equivalent generic cloth pouch off amazon, or from any arts and crafts store.

Cradle, New 3DS + New 3DS XL: I've used both, and can recommend both. You should be able to pick them up in your local nintendo online store, although I don't think they sell them in retail stores in the US. The new models are top loading. This means you can't have a cellphone strap on it, but it does mean it takes up way less room on your desk. If you have a nice desk setup, it can be great to be able to just drop it in without worrying about cables. My only complaint is that there are no rubber feet on the unit - I'd recommend getting some shelf liner to go under it, or buying rubber feet of your own if you have a slippery desk. I haven't had any issues with toppling.

Game Case, all systems: I'm using the Club nintendo game case which is the same dimensions as a single 3DS game case. It holds 18 games, which is more than enough for a single trip for me. The Assecure Pro 18 in 1 game case has the same layout, and is high quality. That said, it doesn't have the slipcover that the club nintendo one does. It's a solid price, and has multiple colors.

u/DalvaMozzerX · 2 pointsr/3DS

i dont know how to make them less noticeable, but I do recommend getting a case of some sort. Since I have a limited edition 3DS XL i went and got this clear case and it is excellent.

u/mobott · 48 pointsr/3DS

As a fellow owner of the Zelda 3DS XL, I highly recommend that you get the Hori TPU case and some screen protectors to go along with it.

No matter how careful you are, your 3DS is bound to take some degree of damage eventually. This case does an excellent job of protecting it from normal bumps and wear (it won't do much if you drop it, but that hopefully wouldn't happen) while still showing off the design. Screen protectors are just good to have.

An additional note: I also suggest getting some sort of cleaning cloth to put between the two screens when you close the system: the bezel on the touch screen will scratch up the top screen.

u/RefridgeratorJP · 1 pointr/3DS

I found this was a pretty nice video.

As far as a battery pack: I personally wouldn't recommend one. They're overpriced. For around the same price you can get a USB>3DS charger cable and buy a much larger battery bank instead. This one in particular comes to mind. You can also use this for other devices, and not have to worry about the extra bulk so you can use a protective case or grip. :)

Edit: Here is a mugen power pack for comparison.

u/toodlebutts · 3 pointsr/3DS

The link provided there isn't a grip, it's a Circle Pad Pro for the original 3DS. You already have a C-Stick on the New 3DS, so it's pointless even if it did fit.

Either https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WU8EEAC/ (which I bought) or https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OTEMTD4/ are considered the best ones. There are pros and cons to each.

The first one doesn't have a cartridge slot open to pull your carts in and out, meaning you have to take the grip off to change physical cartridge games. However, it's more comfortable to access the triggers than the second one.

The second one is generally the more popular one despite being more expensive. There's room to carry two extra games in the back stand, and isn't as hard to take off as the first grip. However, the positions of the "fake triggers" can be confusing and uncomfortable for when you do actually want to use the 3DS triggers.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/3DS

This case looks every bit worth it, loving the Grizzly color scheme. Ugh, hard to punch the $49 button though.

I am considering this custom monster hunter case, is anyone else using it? Apparently it fits the circle pad pro, which is a welcome bonus.

Which one? I picked up mine when I was living in Japan. I think it was like $15 or something at the time.

It's awesome. I can fit both of my 3DSs, cords, and back up power pack.

u/Oobboua · 2 pointsr/3DS

I had a problem like this for my DS lite, and I had to get the battery replaced. Though, on the bright side, if you had to get your battery replaced, 3rd party sellers have already made batteries superior than the Nintendo ones.

http://www.amazon.com/5000mAh-Extended-Battery-Nintendo-CTR-001-MIN-CTR-001/dp/B005NJ2UEW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1369516134&sr=8-4&keywords=3ds+battery

u/nectarprime · 2 pointsr/3DS

Cases like this will totally fit:

Cases that fit over your 3ds while you use it, like the HORI TPU cases, will obviously not fit. There is a new version of them coming out though.

u/whaddadoo · 2 pointsr/3DS

That seems pretty expensive for a class 1 32 gb card, I just picked up a class 4 32 gb from Amazon for ~$19 (this one, to be exact: http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Class-Flash-Memory-SDSDB-032G-AFFP/dp/B007JRB0RE/) It's worked perfectly for me. Class 4 is really all you need if you're just using it for gaming, classes really only matter if you're using it for something like photography and want to take super fast high action shots, then you might want a class 10, but class 4 is all you need for a 3ds.

If you're worried about portability and battery life, get an original 3DS (the glossy one that can fold and always has black around the screen).

https://store.nintendo.com/ng3/browse/subcategory.jsp?categoryId=cat20003

You can get refurbished units for relatively cheap, and you can disable the 3D with parental controls if it bothers you. And there's more battery extenders for the original 3DS than there are for the 2DS. Look up the Nyko Power Grip, or get an extended battery like this:

http://www.amazon.com/5000mAh-Extended-Battery-Nintendo-CTR-001-MIN-CTR-001/dp/B005NJ2UEW/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1415885534&sr=8-14&keywords=cameron+sino+3ds

And as for flash cards, yeah R4 only runs original DS games, not 3DS, and flash cards that do run 3DS software are either limited to certain firmwares or are very expensive.

u/dochardware · 2 pointsr/3DS

this one works perfectly. Some are probably gonna come and say get a Class 10, but it honestly makes no difference. the games don't load any faster so you can save yourself $2-3 dollars. Class 4 is what the system came with anyway

u/AdamskaPrice · 2 pointsr/3DS

This. Does not scratch the system and does not add much bulk.

EDIT: I personally use it for my Animal Crossing 3DS XL and it looks great. I highly recommend this case.

u/kasasasa · 2 pointsr/3DS

Can someone post a photo of a Nintendo charger with something for scale (like the xl unit itself) for me? I have the new 3ds xl, but the store didn't have the official charger so I'm just using a standard brandless one. It works fine, but it's a little bulky and I can't imagine it fitting into any case. Thinking of buying a charger from Amazon when I buy myself a case. Thanks in advance!

ninja edit: I'm considering this case, there's a pic of a charger in the pocket but I can't wrap my head around how that will fit since I don't know how small the Nintendo charger is :(

u/EventuallyGreat · 2 pointsr/3DS

I'd recommend getting an SD card with a faster read/write speed.
A class 4 SD card will give you longer load times.
You might have probably ordered the one you posted already, but I thought I should share this anyway.

It's a UHS I Micro SD card with an adapter for a regular SD Card slot. [Link: Amazon]

I used the same one with the adapter in my original 3DS and I have the same one in my N3DSXL right now. (albeit without the adapter) The faster speed does make a difference in load times and loading up games.

u/cr8ivecodesmith · 14 pointsr/3DS

I didn't know about the matching theme. I just bought it. Looks good, here.

The charm is actually a micro-usb adapter for the charging port. Got it from Amazon for $9. Link here.

u/DarkCybrid · 1 pointr/3DS

Here is the one I use. Works well, is comfortable, has a neat little stand that folds out the back. My only complaint is the bottom lip of it covers the game card slot so you have to take it off to change cards, although this isn't really an issue for me as most of my games are digital.

u/xLuky · 2 pointsr/3DS

You really need a grip to play monster hunter or its torture on your hands.

This glorious piece of plastic has allowed me to play 100+ hours of MH, I can't play without it now.

Someone else posted a grip for the XL, mine is for anyone that has a regular size N3DS like me.

u/Coraldragon · 3 pointsr/3DS

u/Ryair · 2 pointsr/3DS

If you're into monster hunter this is a pretty good pouch.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D84DRNC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It has two pockets inside for cartridges, but I found it easily holds a 3DS XL in the hori duraflex shell, a hori 6 cartridge game case, a small microfiber cloth, and the 3DS charger with some room to spare.

You could also try searching Amazon for 3DS LL pouches/cases as the 3DS XL is referred to as the 3DS LL in Japan.

u/KalamityKappa · 2 pointsr/3DS

Not very many, if any, games need 3D. It's the only major difference worth noting - they play all the same games.

Worth noting that on Amazon, you can get a New 3DS XL for the MSRP price of the New 2DS XL.

One more thing - New 3DS XL systems don't come with AC adapters, New 2DS XL do.

u/Howard_Alan_Treesong · 2 pointsr/3DS

It does fit in that particular case. N3DS XL is almost exactly the same dimensions as old 3DS XL give or take a millimeter, and fabric cases like that one are plenty accommodating.

You could also try this case if you're willing to spend double, or a high-end solution if you spare no expense to protect your devices.

u/NicoC72 · 1 pointr/3DS

I prefer the standard New 3DS myself. The size is great, bigger than the OG 3DS and smaller than the XLs. I still bought a grip, mostly to flesh out the thickness, and now it's really comfortable! The faceplates are nice too, I sticker bombed a set. A point that people will argue is screen size, I think the New 3DS's is fine and the XL is too big for the resolution. Also, screw the gloss on the New XL, it's a terrible finish. The pattern looks nice, but I just can't stand the feel. Some of the faceplates for the New 3DS are glossy, but I think every New 3DS bundle (at least in the US) comes with at least one set of matte plates.

I've looked a bit into this as well and the Mugen does seem to be the only 'integrated' solution. It's nice that you can bolt it on relatively seamlessly but I also decided I don't want to carry the extra weight around all the time (or a little screwdriver to constantly change it in and out).

Personally I ended up adding this external charger to my Amazon wishlist for next time I travel along with this USB 3DS charger cord for about $60 less put together. (And I'll get to charge my iPhone with it too!)

u/Rufio6 · 2 pointsr/3DS

This is the only plastic one I am aware of that is still easily obtainable for the n3ds (non-XL): Amazon Link

I think it feels great, but as other reviewers mentioned, it blocks the cartridge slot and can be a tight fit for some. It also makes the power button even harder to press.

u/Seld416 · 2 pointsr/3DS

While it's not the best, I bought this one for my 3ds xl: http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Class-Flash-Memory-SDSDB-032G-AFFP/dp/B007JRB0RE/

It works perfectly fine for me and I've currently got 6 digital games on it. But it's only a class 4 so it's a tiny bit slower than a class 10 (which I believe would impact loading + saving for 3ds games). However, since there's a sale on Sony class 10 cards, you might consider that if someone can guaratee that it would work for 3ds - though it probably would.

u/Centrioless · 3 pointsr/3DS

This is strictly for new 3ds XL

For body cover, i recommend This gametech soft cover over Hori duraflexi case. the Gametech case has a couple of clips that hook into the lanyard loop holes on the back. If you're annoyed because hori case doesnt really stick to the device, then you're gon love this gametech case. One thing to note is taht the case itself actually has a frost color rather than clear

For the carrying case, I use this Takecase 3ds xl case. It can store up to 8 games in its central compartment. It also has a inner zip storage where you can store a charger and still have room for 5-8 games more. There's a mesh net that holds the 3ds xl on its place. It has everything that I want from a 3ds xl carrying case. There are other alternatives, but they have very snug space, and don't have inner zip storage

u/Gr8NonSequitur · 1 pointr/3DS

Hori as a company is one of the few I feel put forth "Nintendo Quality" in their product so buy with confidence, I haven't been burned on any product I ever bought from them. I currently have my Link Between Worlds XL housed in this, which is housed in this and I recommend them both. My only complaint about the pouch is it's specifically designed to house the system and like 6 games, but there's no room for a charger. If they made a new model that could fit one though, I'd buy it.

I compared it with the speed of a class 10 sandisk extreme card I had, and there was absolutely no difference in loading/save time. I think the read/write on the 3DS is capped at a certain speed and anything higher than that doesn't matter. From the research i've done, it's more about the brand you get than anything else. People have tried lesser known brands and they ended up getting read/write errors, or sometimes it didn't show up at all. Sandisk and sony cards are good choices though.

As a general rule, it's handy to have a USB charger anyways, and go with the biggest mAh you can afford. I've got one that holds 7800 and can charge two devices at once. The 3DS has a 1300mAh capacity, so that battery charger you listed will get you about two full charges, but like any other battery the effectiveness will decrease as time goes on. As for the cable, I bought the $3 one off Amazon such as this one

by purchasing an external battery charger, you can charge up your tablet, phone, 3DS, ipod, or whatever USB-powered device you need without having to carry around too much extra equipment

Thanks for your suggestion but I was trying to find just the cable itself. I saw this http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0071BJK34/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=22RTSQZUTX0L3&coliid=I2BN6BF9YI1G5S on Amazon and am wondering if anyone has had any experience with cables of this sort?

u/beatusboss · 3 pointsr/3DS

I also have screen protectors I got from Amazon and it doesn't mess up my 3D at all and I don't even notice them. I also ordered one of those hard plastic protective shells for the outside of my XL, which helps with scratching bit time.

EDIT:Here is a link to what I bought, the little packing on the bottom with the screen protectors and the zipper case and the shell for less than 6 bucks.

Here is the list. Go past the featured sellers and you get to one that is 23.99 and has free shipping from ninja online. will take about 3 weeks to get to america though.

I use this card in my N3DS XL and have never had a problem with it.

The easiest way to transfer everything to the new card, if you're able to do it, would be to copy everything from your old SD card to your PC and then from your PC to the new SD card.

u/jcarberry · 5 pointsr/3DS

Don't pay for 2 day shipping, just get Amazon Prime. It's so worth the money.

Also, you'll want one of these to go with an external battery: http://www.amazon.com/Gator-Crunch-Charge-Cable-Nintendo/dp/B0071BJK34/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374374641&sr=8-1&keywords=3ds+cable

That's the one I have, and it works well.

u/lbutterrs · 1 pointr/3DS

This is a pretty sturdy case that may work for you.

After reading this sub, this seems to be the most recommended. I have a pair and once applied properly they're unnoticeable, but I recommend you look up youtube tutorials/read up before trying to apply them. It's a little trickier than advertised IMO.

I also have a Pikachu 3DS XL, and I was wondering if you have any worries about rubbing or scratching with this type of case? I have a clear plastic case for my DSLite, and I really wanted to get one to protect my PikaXL, but one of the reviews on Amazon for a similar case mentioned that some of the paint had been rubbed off their 3DS along one of the sides, where the plastic case was rubbing against the console.

I'm probably just worrying too much about it, but I thought I'd ask if you noticed anything similar that could scratch up the cool paintjob.

u/ChibiSheep · 1 pointr/3DS

It's not the same physical size, and adds weight and bulk, but I grabbed an aftermarket one from amazon for ~$25, and now I get a solid week from my 3ds.

u/electromonkey222 · 1 pointr/3DS

articfawx mentioned that you should pick up a screen protector and I agree. Best Buy should have them for less than 20 bucks and they cover the top and bottom screens, so you'll almost never have to worry about having your system damaged.

Another really necessary thing I would recomend is buying one of these as they're going to keep the paint and everything from getting scratched without putting a big stupid NERF case on it.

So yeah, Screen cases and a Crystal Case will greatly reduce the ammount of damage you'r 3DS will take. And believe me, it will take some damage. It just happens.

u/broncosandwrestling · 2 pointsr/3DS

The Club Nintendo cases suck everywhere. 30 dollars is too much, let alone 60. If you can get one with your coins (through Club Nintendo), great. If you can't, pass.

If you want something comparable to a normal game case in size, I've heard mixed things about the Assecure cases. They're probably comparable to the Hori cases in cost where you live. I know they are in America.

They hold as many games as the Club Nintendo cases, and come in a variety of colors - just search Amazon or eBay and there's quite a few.

Here is one on Amazon.

Get a New 2DS XL. I like the Pokeball edition

And the Hylian Shield

New 3DS XL Snes Edition

u/Nikittele · 2 pointsr/3DS

I got this TPU case from Hori, it's one of the best cases I've ever had for any device. It hardly adds any bulk to the device and is nearly crystal clear. It's softer than plastic so it won't scratch the 3DS' surface but it's also hard enough to provide decent protection. It's hands down this subreddit's favourite case.

u/Fruits_In_History · 1 pointr/3DS

I recently just got this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WU8EEAC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It is just plastic, but is cheap and fits the regular New N3DS. Had decent reviews. I haven't use it really yet, but think it will work well

u/Remmes- · 1 pointr/3DS

There's this: http://www.amazon.com/eForCity%C2%AE-Crystal-Compatible-Nintendo-3DS-X/dp/B0093W7KG8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1417528756&sr=8-3&keywords=3ds+xl+transparent

And I recall seeing a clear decal on Etsy to put over your decal in order to protect it (I'll try finding that, but I guess once you put that on it can't be signed anymore)

u/DpwnShift · 1 pointr/3DS

I doubt it. When I bought this adapter a few months ago, it was the only one I found on Amazon and it's almost exactly like OP's. Still totally worth it though...

u/Finaldeath · 1 pointr/3DS

This is the one i got and it worked great right out of the box.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010Q57T02/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You could get a larger one but cards larger than 32gb use a different format out of the box so it requires reformating it before trying to use it in the 3ds.

u/foreignfriend25 · 4 pointsr/3DS

Circle pad pro, its this battery powered peripheral for 3ds that allows the player to use an extra stick and two extra shoulder buttons. looks like this

u/doyouwantaballoon · 2 pointsr/3DS

I got one on Amazon for 8 bucks like a week ago. The price seems to have gone up. Prob because everyone is buying them. There are a lot on the used and new from other retailers though.

u/neoslith · 4 pointsr/3DS

I like this one more

I have a blue one and a Club Nintendo one.

u/Maeno-san · 2 pointsr/3DS

I have a case like this one, and I have to recommend the cute kirby one too. I also have some telescoping styluses, but you'd have to find the right ones for whichever system you got. It depends on whether it's a new 3ds xl or an old 3ds xl

u/bkforyou · 1 pointr/3DS

Have you considered clear decal protectors?

You should NOT need to pay $20. You can go used for like 5 bucks here. Or if you pay for shipping, I'll send you one of mine.

Do you have the original 3DS? If so, don't spend $20.

I used the Power Pak, it had about twice the battery life and I got it for around $10 at a GameStop. Amazon has it listed for $14.99, but there is also this at $10 if you don't need the extra battery life or slight bulkiness of the Power Pak.

u/aj3x · 1 pointr/3DS

This one or this one The first one should be just fine. If you have a 2ds, then an adapter is required I think.

u/Sairyn_ · 2 pointsr/3DS

I think you're looking for something like the Skinomi Fullbody Protector? There used to be a HORI version, but that seems to have sold out everywhere. Otherwise, not much else exists.

u/The_5th · 1 pointr/3DS

can you name the two cases you've tried? I'm also currently in the market. Specifically something that can hold a charger and DS with face plates or a cover. So far i've been looking at this and it doesn't look that bad tbh

u/spankymuffin · 1 pointr/3DS

This has been going on for a while. It's not a bad deal!

u/justhadtosaythis · 1 pointr/3DS

If you bought a normal 3DS I recommend buying the Nyko Power Pak +

It doubled my 3Ds's battery life and I think it makes the console easier to grip. Very cheap too.

I wanted to buy the Nyko Power Grip. But it wasn't available when I ordered :(

I can't comment on it but 3x the battery life seemed very cool. Especially when the power pak legit doubles the battery life...

It's the only thing keeping me from upgrading to an XL. I don't want to sacrifice the battery life /: First world problems...

u/HolidayBrick · 3 pointsr/3DS

I have a few different colors of these. They're good, but they are more expensive then they used to be.

u/MaGus76 · 4 pointsr/3DS

I use single-game cases like these from Speedlink. They are easy to carry around in a pocket or so, but I put them in my n3ds carrying case where there is not enough space for the 16-game case.

You could also use a 3ds case like these and put your games there.

u/AlexKnolly · 2 pointsr/3DS

For what it's worth, I've been using this one for 2 months now without any issues.

u/Ugly_Muse · 2 pointsr/3DS

I'd second this case. Really solid and holds your games, charger, and stylus.

u/Zaculus · 1 pointr/3DS

Here's one. Assuming you're in the US, it WILL ship for free, and there are no custom taxes or anything. It's a little bit less than "a 3DS game case and a half" thick, not sure how that compares to the CN one.

u/icravedanger · 1 pointr/3DS

Call your local Gamestop and ask them to check inventory on "Nyko Power Pak+". It's $7 at Gamestop and $15 on Amazon.

Looked around for a bit and it seems the Lightning to 3DS adapter is currently only available on Gametech's site (I'm assuming it just came out so that's most likely why.)

Give it a few weeks for resellers to start popping up.

But the Micro USB to 3DS adapter is on Amazon if anyone here wants that one.

It isn't keeping costs down. It isn't saving $8, and it doesn't cost $8 to manufacture.

It's about profits, not consumer savings. It's a rather ridiculous move too, because the vast majority of shoppers will need it.
