I don't have any local recommendations for you, but I do have a few world-class recommendations that will cost you much less in time and money.

For CBT, check out Dr. David Burn's book - Feeling Good: You can pick it up online for like $5. It is a light and interesting read, lots of stories. Here is a study about "Feeling Good": "This study provided empirical evidence that a behavioral prescription for Feeling Good may be as effective as standard care, which commonly involves an antidepressant prescription."

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20803165

For mindfulness, the fountainhead is Eastern/Bhuddist thought here is a good source for that:
The Power of Mindfulness by Nyanaponika Thera (fo free online)

http://www.buddhanet.net/pdf_file/powermindfulness.pdf

If you want both CBT and Mindfulness - then you should read or listen to Jeffery Schwartz. He has a few books, the most recent "You are not your brain" is approachable and an integration of Mindfulness and Cognitive Therapy.
Here is a 5 minute video, gives you a feel for the author: "4 steps to changing your brain for good"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuABDAAns7w

If you like that - here is a half-hour more (summary of the book above):
'You are not your brain' at Mind & Its Potential 2011
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcrGlUHlu4M

Finally, if you are into workbooks - pick up "Mind over Mood"

http://www.amazon.com/Mind-Over-Mood-Change-Changing/dp/0898621283

Regardless of the book or therapist, you will have to do a lot mental work. So ultimately, most of the therapy, is self-therapy.
Best of luck to you. And remember: this too, shall pass.

First of all, the bug spray WILL work, but once an infestation is in place then you have a bit of a battle on your hands. It won't go away over night. I would call the pest company and tell them about the situation. It is in their best interest to keep you as a customer and provide stellar support because...

Second: Spraying for bugs yourself is really easy and extremely cheap. For the price of one guy coming to your house and spraying once you could cover your house for many, many years.

Buy this and one of these. Read the warning labels (don't spray if rain is expected within 24-48 hours, clear the house until the spray is dry, which is about 30 minutes), watch some YouTube instructions, and away you go! Demand is very safe for humans and pets alike, doesn't bioaccumulate, and is probably what the pest guys used.

I don't think "everything needs to be centralized." If people want to live in the suburbs or rural areas, good for them!

But cities are really awesome and really useful. The state officeworkers probably want some places to eat. This location is literally across the street from a sandwich shop. In addition, there are dozens of other food options within a mile or so. Because there's a big cluster of people working, people have to travel less far to get lunch and they have a wider variety of options.

All the people who work there would probably like to live nearby where they work. But so would the people who work at the lunch places, and they'd both like to live near where their kids go to school, and their church, etc. If they were far outside the city, at least some of things they'd want would be very far away and harder to access.

I could go on and on, but if you're interested, I suggest reading the very short Gated City by Ryan Avent about the economic benefits of cities or much longer (and more boring) Triumph of the City by Edward Glaeser.

Honestly, I am weary to post this in that many of you may say this in inhumane, but I think it is an immediate solution.

My family has 4 chihuahas who act very much like the dogs you've described(one barks, they all bark). We bought one of these bark boxes that emits a high pitch sound inaudible to humans when it senses the dogs bark. This sound distracts the dog so that they stop barking. We only had to actually turn it on a handful of times before they got the message that it wasn't cool to bark when it was night time. It was incredibly effective, much to my surprise. I would think if you set one of these on your side of the fence and turned it on for a few nights at 10PM, the dogs would learn not to bark, at which point you could just return the box and sleep in peace.

They probably also sell these at pet stores.

Once you find a therapist, here's a good article to read through before your first visit: https://psychcentral.com/lib/what-to-expect-in-your-first-counseling-session/

If things aren't clicking between you and the therapist after the first couple of visits, don't be afraid to cancel future appointments and try another one. (Don't just ghost them though; make sure you cancel the appointments or they could charge you a cancellation fee.)

The first therapist I ever went to fell asleep during our first meeting. I called the next day and told her I didn't think it was going to work out.

If you decide you don't want or can't afford therapy, here is a really good book: https://amazon.com/Feeling-Good-New-Mood-Therapy/dp/0380810336/ I've used it a couple of times to help me out of a slump.

Just remember that it's OK to ask for help.

They actually had windows on their houses, and books.

They also did not own slaves and were hard-working people. Those two things are related, by the way.

Olmsted's Texas Journey is an fascinating book. He took meticulous notes at the end of each day about his interactions with people and the places he's visit.

This is first hand history. Real history. Everyday people kind of history. Want to be a fly on the wall and listen, word for word, as two slaves chew the fat on a river boat heading down the Mississippi towards New Orleans 180 years ago? Read this book.

Then read "Evolution of a State by Noah Smithwick", which is even better.

More first hand accounts of Texas history. The dude was a Texas Ranger in and around Austin in the 1830's, spent a month living in a Comanche camp. He stood in the doorway of a church along a muddy street in San Felipe de Austin in the 1820's as a teenager read Shakespeare by moonlight to a packed house. He helped Texans escape Santa Anna's wrath as a Ranger during the runaway scrape.

I use this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003L76BJS/

Looks kind of weird but I just put it on the wall behind my entertainment center. Haven't had any issues but go over to /r/cordcutters for more info on which one might work best for you. A lot of resources there.

If you can afford that you can afford my rear light that is one of the brightest for the cost. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00E1NQ6T6/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1415985141&sr=8-2

u/MrPolymath · 4 pointsr/Austin

Not so sure about that...

A native Austinite claims credit for it:
http://www.amazon.com/Keep-Austin-Weird-Guide-Side/dp/0764326392/ref=la_B001JS89N2_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1381814267&sr=1-1

And it was adopted by the Austin Independent Business Alliance.

I distinctly remember that phrase going strong before Californian & Dallas hating was en vogue.

"A must-read for anyone who thinks "build a wall" is the answer to anything." --Esquire

I think they are saying they are done with your argument at that point, given how the book is promoted.

u/uluman · 13 pointsr/Austin

Depending on how far away the dogs are from your property, you could try one of those ultrasonic anti-barking devices: http://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Outdoor-Ultrasonic-Bark-Deterrent/dp/B000UZNLGA

I'm referring to the indoor canister that I purchased and how my nat infestation started when using it. I started maybe 4-5 weeks ago and stopped, washed the canister, and haven't been using it for a couple of weeks yet still nats everywhere. We didn't have any before I started composting. Now I've gone back to putting everything in the trash. This is what I was using https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015DRQ36E/ref=asc_df_B015DRQ36E5266686/?tag=hyprod-20&creative=395033&creativeASIN=B015DRQ36E&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198108511374&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13760333851182671329&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1027028&hvtargid=pla-321022493901 before taking the trash to the bin every day or so.

u/Bloo216 · 3 pointsr/Austin

Not sure how it works, but what if you buy the library a new copy. Would you still need to pay for any fees?

I just figured this might be a cheaper route if you can't find the original.

u/ph3l0n · 6 pointsr/Austin

Try this: https://www.amazon.com/Lisle-19860-Tire-Deflator/dp/B002NEUOGG Just un-screw the cap, screw this on, let it deflate, re-apply cap. No one will know the difference.

> There were no Mexicans and any natives that existed before Texas was populated by Stephen Austin and the like were eradicated by the Mexicans or the blood thirsty Comanche long before Americans arrived in Texas.

> Ironically, "mostly" Americans came to what is Texas "legally" just about as perfectly legal as it could have been done back in that day

This is the dumbest fucking shit I have ever had someone come up to me with. Holy shit. You are empirically wrong.

Read a fucking book bub:

https://www.amazon.com/Anglos-Mexicans-Making-Texas-1836-1986/dp/0292775962

https://www.amazon.com/Occupied-America-History-Chicanos-6th/dp/0321427386

EVEN AN APOLOGIST LIKE HARDIN SAYS YOURE WRONG
https://www.amazon.com/Texian-Iliad-Military-History-Revolution/dp/0292731027

Hope you feel better after writing all that bullshit because you sure looking fucking dumb.

> Why is it that you have such a false perception of how things happened? I don't know about you, but I would hate being lied to and seem so stupid when talking to people who clearly know better what is the truth. Don't let the idiots pull you into their cult.

Look in the mirror.

no, because of jobs. a lot of people move here for jobs, and making it difficult for lower income people to move here is going to hurt their chances of climbing the economic ladder.

highly recommend the gated city by Ryan Avent on this.

There are always Electric Scooters. I recently got an ES2 for less than $500 on Amazon. No more pedaling for me.

You would need more of an ES4 though for the range but still cheap as fuck, you can get it for $650 right now deliver to you tomorrow.
