That's pretty awesome and certainly very powerful/customizable. Nice job!

> I just couldn't justify dropping $60 for a circle with 3 buttons on it, and no dimmers.

I just wanted to clarify, the Hue Tap switch can, in fact, have one of the its buttons assigned to a dimmer mode, via Hue Labs. It cycles through three levels of (adjustable) brightness. There are a handful of Android and iOS apps too, that can make the same assignment.

Also, the Hue Dimmer switch is just $25. Or $35 bundled with a white bulb.

Lastly, many don't realize this but the old Philips "LivingColors" remotes work perfectly fine (now) with Hue bulbs and hub.

Image of a compatible model here:

I've just set up my second one, and have them both working in different rooms of my house. And for less than $15 on Amazon or eBay, they're the cheapest (and actually most versatile) physical, light switches for a Hue system. You can even select the desired color right from the remote. I love them! (Discussion here.)

Thanks for sharing your ideas and work here, and enjoy!

Hue sells many different configurations of the starter kit, with different amounts and types of bulbs. The cheaper one likely has fewed bulbs, and probably only white bulbs. Older kits can also be cheaper. My opinion is that if you're going to get smart bulbs that don't do color, then you're better of with smart switches. The Hue "white" bulbs are a really ugly yellow that I can't stand. White Ambiance is a nice middle ground, at half the cost of the color bulbs, while giving you full control over the "warmth" spectrum. So you can change your lighting to match the time of day, for instance.

This is the cheapest kit I see on Amazon.com. It's basically the cost of the bridge with 2 white bulbs. Then you have the non-refurb for slightly more. This one is still white bulbs, but now you have 4. This one is like the first kit, but with a dimmer switch. I recommend dimmer switches, as otherwise guests will use the wall switch, disabling your smart bulbs. Then you start getting into the white ambiance kits, this one with a dimmer and 2 bulbs. Finally the color bulb kits will be the most expensive.

So, what's right for you? Depends on what you want. Usually you want to buy the starter kit that has a "free bridge". Use the following price chart to determine the value of your kit:

  • White bulb: $15 ea.
  • White Ambiance bulb: $25 ea.
  • White & Color Abiance bulb: $50 ea.
  • Dimmer switch: $20 ea.
  • Motion Sensor: $40 ea.

If the kit costs the value of it's contents or less, it's worthwhile. If it costs more than that, you're paying for the bridge. Usually the cheaper kits will have you paying more for the bridge. By the time you get into the 4-color-pack range they're giving you a credit.

Now, all that said, if your concern is cheap DO NOT BUY INTO HUE! It's extremely expensive, probably the priciest smart bulb. Ikea Tradfri and LiFX both have cheaper options that are similar in quality. Or if you really want cheap, go with Sengled. Hue is the premium option.

The hue recessed retrofit doesn't come in color but depending on the room being able to change the temperature of the white is nice. For a kitchen or a bathroom where it would be rare to change the temp it's easiest/cheapest to go with standard led retrofit trims and use a switch like this one if you wanted it still integrated with Hue: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CVL9SZF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_xv..BbCFE9ZMW

But for a living room/family room/bedroom I frequently switch between cool or warm light and appreciate the hue retrofits. Color would of course be nice to have on occasion, I'd assume they eventually release a model for that.

Tossing the description through google translate...

> Color temperature: 2,700 Kelvin. High-quality, warm white light for a cozy and secure home. Compact dimming without installation - Experience stepless dimming via Hue dimmer switch or Hue app

These are the "white" lights. They only dim the intensity - there is no color changing functionality. They cannot shift the color temperature of "white" either.

They are perfectly good bulbs in the right spot. I have them in my kitchen.

If you are after the... lets call it "hue experience", you will want the equivalent of the color starter. The white ambient (white ambient starter) is what I find myself using most often. The white ambient lights can't change to blue or red - but it can change to a very warm or very cool white... which I find more useful for living spaces.

I had a shelving unit that had built in fluorescent tubes. Now, granted it is an accent shelf, and each shelf was approximately 20" x 18". The fluorescent tubes were on the 20" sides, and there was no lighting on the 18" sides. I used Hue Gen 2 light strips all the way around on all three shelves, and the light (without all the CRI calculations) passed the "wife test". No discernible difference at full power detected. (SCORE!).

I also didn't care for the dots of each LED, so I put the Hue lightstrips into these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NCS0WE8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These are super easy to cut with a handsaw, easy to install, and nicely diffuse the LED light and protect the strips.

Where I needed a non-lit extension (such as between each shelf), I used these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M7XDZ5V/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And finally whenever there was a junction, I used white electrical tape to make sure the two strips stayed affixed. Just a small bit to wrap around the joint.

Your broad options are:

  1. Continue using your conventional wall switches to toggle lights. This somewhat defeats the purpose of smart bulbs, though, because you can't remotely operate them (via app, voice, sensors, schedules, wireless dimmer, etc.) when they're switched off. You'd have to turn on the switch first, and then you could use the app (or whatever) to adjust the brightness/color/scene.
  2. Disable or prevent access to your switches and leave your fixtures in an always-on state. There are a variety of ways to accomplish this. You could tape over the switch (or use something a little fancier), or you could re-wire the circuit and completely remove the switch. A caution on re-wiring: If you ever need to shut-off power to the fixture (e.g. to change a bulb) you'd have to do it at the circuit breaker.

Some folks use a variation of #2: They find creative ways to install a Philips Hue Dimmer switch over-the-top of their conventional switch, thereby preventing access to the old switch and providing convenient access to a Hue-friendly switch in its place!

More recently, there are some new Friends of Hue switches starting to arrive on the market that should fit standard (US & Europe) switch plates (unlike the non-standard sized Philips Hue Dimmer switch.) You could use them the same way folks use the Philips Hue Dimmer switch, without resorting to creative 3D-printing hacks to make it fit.

Hi there! Adjustable temperature is one thing I drool over with the hue system (yeah, I'm weird lol). This is the minimum you would need to see the CT range of the hue ambiance bulbs:
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Dimmable-Compatible-HomeKit-Assistant/dp/B01N4OMRJ9/

However, you only get 4 presets vs the entire range of color temps and the system by itself is not "smart" or compatible with your phone. It is however able to be added to a full system with hue bridge such as...

https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Ambiance-Starter-Compatible-Assistant/dp/B01F6T4R80/
Which comes with everything you need to get started and connect your phone to the system. This setup will allow you to play with every single variation of CT for the hue ambiance bulbs via your smartphone!

The first option is the most affordable, however you only get 4 preconfigured non adjustable settings, vs the second is probably your best bet for a smart phone compatible system that gives you 'infinite' adjustability. If you don't care about smartphone/smarthome integration, look into Philips Sceneswitch bulbs! I have a bunch of them in some multi bulb fixtures I didn't want to spend the money for ambiance bulbs and dimmer switches lol.

u/enkafan · 2 pointsr/Hue

This is exactly what you need but it looks like Phillips isn't selling it anymore - Philips Hue White Ambiance Smart Bulb Starter Kit (2 A19 Bulbs, 1 Bridge, and 1 Dimmer Switch).

The good news is if you are willing to roll the dice on a refurbished set you can get it for $80.

u/ceciltech · 1 pointr/Hue

If you want to use non-smart bulbs (she could take the ones from her current place?) in a built in light fixture, you can add a wired Zigbee dimmer. Most I have found say they are not Hue (bridge) compatible but this one says it is. Basically wire it in like a standard switch, then you add it to hue just like you would a new bulb and it shows up as light. You can also find Zigbee plugs and some have a dimming feature as well. All of these require a neutral wire and be careful because some won't work with the Hue bridge so look for hue compatibility.

If the measurements work for you, there are 3rd party extension cables that would let you span the space occupied by the extractor without having cut/splice/solder any strips

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Extension-Cable-Compatible-Philips-LightStrip/dp/B01M7XDZ5V/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1488037366&sr=8-1&keywords=Extension+Cable+for+Philips+Hue+LightStrip+Plus+%283ft%2F1m+-+2+Pack%2C+White%29

Best of luck!

In my experience you can usually find a 4 pack on sale for cheaper than buying 4 individual bulbs or even 2 2-packs.

Currently on Amazon a single bulb is $46.95 ($187.80) & the 2-pack is currently $89.99 ($179.98).

A 4-pack with the hub (which you could eBay or save for future use) is currently running $180.16 which is actually more expensive than I have seen in a few months. Lately they have been around $160 (I actually paid $146 in June).

So with the current pricing on a 4-pack you get an extra hub for .18¢ . IMO, a 4 pack is usually the way to go.

EDIT: I just found a deal on Amazon for 2-pack starter kits for $77.93 ($155.86). You will have 2 extra hubs though but that seems to be the best deal for 4 bulbs right now.

This starter kit seems the best way to go, unless you want to go with white.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D1J5QC7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Here, you get 2 bulbs and a hub.

Just the hub is about $48, so the bulbs are more like $25 each.

Or you could go with https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Hue-Equivalent-Compatible-Assistant/dp/B06Y3QXSGX/ref=sr_1_12?keywords=hue+kit&qid=1550434393&s=hi&sr=1-12, three bulbs and a hub.

Or, check out your local Bed Bath and Beyond and see if they still have any on clearance.

Get a 2 gang switch plate (or 1 wider than you currently have) and a switch cover/guard. You can install a 2 gang plate on a 1 gang box with the 2nd gang covering the wall a bit. Attach the dimmer to the unused side of the plate. The Hue dimmer comes with tape on the back and will cover the unused screw holes.

This is much easier, MUCH safer if you don't know what you are doing, and will still allow you to turn the power off if you need to.

I've seen people suggest a metal plate with a blank 2nd gang to take advantage of the magnets on the back if the dimmer.

For the switch cover, I'm using a magnetic cover:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002X88GYY/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1479335243&sr=8-2&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=switch+cover&dpPl=1&dpID=31rKEqw%2BSZL&ref=plSrch

The hue dimmer's base takes up more than 1/2 of the switch plate, so I had to mount it with about a millimeter hanging off the side. Barely noticeable, but next time I'll use something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000NCV1SK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1479335243&sr=8-1&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=switch+cover&dpPl=1&dpID=31HrCmi9fBL&ref=plSrch

u/WhatWasWhatAbout · 3 pointsr/Hue

I use my Hue bulbs almost exclusively in the numerous lamps we have around our house. I got so tired of having to walk around to each lamp to switch it on (first world problem). Now, I just have one of the Hue dimmer switches in each room which turn on all lamp lights for that room.

Yes, you have to leave the lamp's switch in the on position, and yes, it can get annoying when guests visit and don't know to use the Hue switch. The light acts like a normal bulb in that it'll go on a off with the lamp's switch, but Hue dimmer switch will only work when lamp's switch is in the "on" position.

I've enjoyed it a lot, especially since the Hue dimmer switches are magnetized to their mounting plate and can be used remotely, say from bed or the couch.

u/nagi603 · 1 pointr/Hue

Yeah, that might be a better solution.

If the TV and display are close enough, you might get away with 3rd party cable extensions (Litcessory is the only well-known compatible brand) and two 1m extension strips. But they are expensive and will look ghastly if you can't hide them. And you won't be able to control them separately.

The only other method I can think of is using velcro to fix them to the displays and constantly transferring them, which sound crazy.

u/TheKobayashiMoron · 3 pointsr/Hue

You need to condense some of those strips down to a strip and extensions. Each Lightstrip power supply and its 2m strip counts as a light, but you can expand that up to 8 additional 1m extensions and it still counts as one light per 10m.

You currently have a total of 16 lights. If you can arrange the strips such that you can replace six 2m strips with twelve 1m extensions and you’ll be good to go. The extensions are currently $21.99 on Amazon. If you sell the 6 base units for about $45/ea net, you’ll cover the cost of the 12 extensions.

u/techtornado · 1 pointr/Hue

Will also ask Phillips if it will be possible in a future firmware update.

Thanks codon! While we don't have a product to reconnect cut off pieces yet, we do have extension cables without lights in order to get your Lightstrip to a different area while not lighting the section in between. We sell 10ft, 3ft, and 6inch lengths. Hope that helps a little, even if it doesn't quite fit the whole order.

u/rgsteele · 3 pointsr/Hue

The LightStrip Plus allows you to connect another strip to the end of the main strip. Third parties are selling extension cables that allow you to have a break between the main strip and the extension strip (like this one ). Just make sure the total length on a single controller is less than 32 feet.

u/Hydro130 · 4 pointsr/Hue

A hub setup sounds like overkill for a dorm room... I would consider returning what you have now, and instead getting one of these kits. I'm pretty sure you can add a few other bulbs to it later too - no hub required - bulbs just sync to the dimmer switch.

If you got the $50 pre-Black Friday lightstrips from Best Buy or Amazon, Amazon now has the extensions on sale ($23.99, 20% off; not quite as good as the near-50% on the main lightstrips, but not bad considering they don't seem to go on sale very often): https://www.amazon.com/Philips-LightStrip-Extension-Compatible-Assistant/dp/B0167H31CI/

u/tehdrizzle · 2 pointsr/Hue

Not that I'm aware of. Your best bet would be to get a light switch plate that has an additional switch slot or something like this and a lightswitch cover. Put the double plate over the single switch, stick the switch cover over the switch in the ON position, and use the hue dimmer's sticky mount on the blank switch area.

It's a couple extra bucks, but won't leave any marks when all taken down.

u/hexarobi · 3 pointsr/Hue

Maybe the reg price has just dropped? I saw a thread from 14 days ago where people were bummed to have missed out at that price.

You need a Zigbee switch. Just searching Amazon for that term will find you a lot of options.

You can also do an inline switch that works with Hue like: https://www.amazon.com/110-240V-Controller-Compatible-Control-Automation/dp/B07FBD96DG/

If you're not married to the Hue system there's also Xiaomi Aqara switches. Or you can go with Z-wave and use Fibaro, which offer both regular switches (Walli) and inline switches.

You are looking for the
Hue White Ambiance Starter Kit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F6T4R80/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_imaAybKVJN7RZ

I don't think that there was ever a new gen for the white ambiance bulbs. Gen 3 refers to the improved greens and blues in the color bulbs. If you don't need the hue dimmer in the kit above, you can probably buy a hue bridge at a discount on ebay/craigslist and then buy the bulbs separately ($30 each) instead.

u/Mr_Will · 2 pointsr/Hue

The lack of a neutral wire in most wall enclosures can make this challenging.

I'd be inclined to remove the wall switch and put the control hardware somewhere else in the circuit. Then put a smart switch wherever is most convenient, without it having a physical connection to the light.

Edit: Something like this would work: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Controller-SmartThings-Lightify-Downlights-Automation/dp/B07FBD96DG/

In case anyone else finds this helpful, the two light switch guards I am considering are this one and also this one.

If anyone is interested in a custom 3D printed holder for the Hue Dimmer that can go over a regular switch (acts like a guard but holds the dimmer as well), let me know and as soon as he has worked out the design I will have him upload the program files (or he can print and ship one to you).

Thats what I have done for switched lights that I'm using smart bulbs with.

PAR means Parabolic Aluminized Reflector

Where ass BR means Bulged Reflector

So what's happened is you are loosing a little light that isnt being reflected down as efficiently. Also PAR's are 'narrow spot' and BR are more of a flood. So you are probably seeing a more washed out light that isn't as hot spotty. So like if you had a PAR up shining onto a specific spot on the counter you are now seeing more of a flood.

If they are recessed can lights you could possibly go to the new retrofit lights that just recently came out, tho not color.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0798JMX2X

2700k is one of the lowest lumen outputs. Also most people say kitchen lights should go cooler, more towards sunlight at 6500k. I personally dont like 6500k so I deal with it by adding more lights. And the cooler (higher in k) you go the brighter the Hue lights are.

What I did was added light strips above and below my cabinets to provide indirect uplight, and task lighting under the cabinets, and then the 5 can lights with br30 rgbw lights.

If you need to cut a strip, use these split end connectors as well:

Did you happen to get this version? Because I’m having a similar issue.

These are "UL listed," though I'm not certain that means they are for "in-wall" use:

I wouldn't mess around with these if you're getting a hue hub. Just get a 4-pack of standard white hues. If you want color or ambiance (adjustable white) get them individually.

You will almost certainly want a dimmer switch as it's a pain to always rely on your phone especially if you ever have guests over.

Sorry, I'm not 100% sure what you mean - are you saying these can be used to retrofit my led wiring and I can use the a19 bulbs?

Is there anywhere other than the UK Amazon product page that mentions the limitation to Bridge 2.0? I can't seem to find it anywhere on Phillips' Hue product page, nor the US Amazon page:

That image is gen 3.0, but 3.1 didn’t add any user-facing differences. Just a different/cheaper build material in the screw.

You can tell because the screw has a black ring, not white of 3.1 such as these:

To everyone in this thread linking the White Ambiance: it's not the same as the white bulb. White Ambiance lets you adjust color temperature. White is only dimmable. Hue White is one thing and a bulb has always been $15. Hue White Ambiance is another thing and has always been $30.

They may have just stopped selling single white bulbs, because you can still get a two pack and a four pack, both with bulbs for $15 each.

How about if i for example need to put the strip along 90 degree corners?

Wouldn't i need something like this?

However, this doesn't seem to be male to male.
Also, isn't it required to solder using the product you linked?
