Just my $0.02 after years of fiddling with electronics and various gadgets. This goes for a lot of cleaning questions and tips here.

DON'T use a toothpick or compressed air unless there is a route/path of egress.

Sure, if you're careful you may be able to brush out some of the dust and grime, but forcibly doing so (using a toothpick or compressed air) is also very likely to push dust and dirt into areas where you really don't want it.

Unless you've disassembled your device and are cleaning it from the inside out, you are pushing junk into the device.

If you have some loose-ish stuff that won't come out by gently tapping the device face-down against your palm, for example, then you can try a soft-bristle brush. Again, though, this introduces a force that can push debris into the device.

You can try something called Cyber Clean , which is a putty that is specifically meant to lift stuff off/out of surfaces and crevices.

For prevention, the best option is probably a case (that wraps around/covers the gap. This will still introduce a little 'nook' between the front panel and the front edge of the case, but this is much easier to clean. Just take off the case and wipe away the 'frame' of grime left behind. Make sure not to wipe it over the gap between the front panel and the phone body, though.

My protector is PET film, I have no experience with it either, but here's the link if you want to look into it:

http://www.amazon.com/Protector-Highly-Transparent-Anti-Glare-Anti-Fingerprint-Lifetime/dp/B00GH5S1NK

I personally use the matte one and it looks lovely. Has a smooth not sticky touch that protectors and screens generally have. Attracts finger grease ezpz though, just a simple wipe and it's OK.

yeah, that's about the only thing I'm not a fan of. I have a pair of Audio Technica M50s and the plug-in jack is too wide to fit in the headphone jack, but I don't really use those with my phone too often anyway.

The thing that did cause an issue was trying to use the AUX jack in my car, to listen to my music. I owned 3 male-to-male audio cables and all of them had really wide jacks just like the headphones. I had to buy a specific cable to fit the case properly.

This is the cable I bought from Amazon and it fits perfectly. In case anyone else has a similar problem.

Get at least one google stock wireless charger to use as a car dock. Just superglue the sucker to whatever mount option you want. Holds the phone like a champ and you just have to slap it on there when you get in the car.

Also, if you plan on using the wireless chargers you may want to get a bumper case, which leaves the back open and gives a bit of a lip to protect the super fragile edge-to-edge glass.

Keep that glass feeling like new! But seriously, this stuff is the shiznit. It makes all my glass surfaces feel like I just took off the first screen protector.

Edit: My phone has been totally naked (save for a case to protect it from drunk me on the weekend) since I got it in March. One impossible to notice scratch. Overjoyed with the quality.

I use the Cruzerlite Bugdroid case and I haven't had any problems with it. Looks good and keeps it protected. I'm not one to drop my phones so it hasn't been drop tested, but I'm not willing to test that out for you =)

I just got the Tudia Hybrid case and I love it. I had the Spigen Ultra Hybrid before but I didn't like that the clear part on the back got scratched.

The Tudia also lets you choose the strip color, which is cool.

Here's a two pack for $3 less

Also, upvote for these... I was lucky enough to get a 3 pack back in the day and they're awesome!

u/lt13jimmy · 1 pointr/Nexus5

I got one since I bought the N5. I had the original screen plastic layer for like 3 days until my screen protector arrived. No one can notice the screen protector that is on.

Just take your time to put it and you won't even notice it. It's better to be safe than sorry. I'm still on the first one too.

Oh yea I was nervous as hell. Popping off the back cover was the hardest part. I actually just went and bought the [ifixit toolkit](iFixit Essential Electronics Toolkit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DTPZQ98/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_poalub0Q13KF1) so I'd have the right tools for the job, it definitely helped. After popping off the back, the battery is held in with some adhesive, but overall it wasn't that bad of a process.

If you are going to root I'll recommend the wugfresh nexus root toolkit very easy to follow along with.

I have an auxiliary 3.5mm input adapter for my OEM stereo/nav unit and I use this gogroove smartmini aux BT to connect my phone via BT.

I've only used it for calls a few times and people on the other end complained of echoing but I'm thinking I just have to relocate it to somewhere else. Music streaming is good and battery life is good.

u/mrFarenheit_ · 3 pointsr/Nexus5

I find these Blackberry ones are perfect.

Unless you want just a cable? I'm sure any of these will work.

u/beermit · 14 pointsr/Nexus5

If you have access to a 3D printer, I recommend this one.

It's compatible with this qi charger. This is what I've been using for the past 4-5 months. It's a great little dock.

u/tjk911 · 2 pointsr/Nexus5

I'm typically super careful with my phone, so I just wanted a scratch-protection minimal case to avoid additional bulk.

I got the BearMotion "sandpaper" case. They go by various names, you can get them on eBay for $2 or so.

It adds enough of a lip to the front so that you can put it face down without letting your screen come in contact with the surface, and there's enough thickness in the back to protect your camera from contact.

My current case is

I think it looks good and it has saved my phone on at least 2 occasions after only having it for 1 month

u/calpaully · 1 pointr/Nexus5

It doesn't look or feel as nice because the factory-applied oleophobic (oil repelling) coating wears off over time. I just tried this stuff and so far I love it. It cleaned the screen and restored the slickness that makes new phones so nice.

u/naeskivvies · 1 pointr/Nexus5

The easiest solution would be to buy a cheap pair of ear buds with an in-line mic. For example: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007136B7A

u/Mikuro · 0 pointsr/Nexus5

I have a Ringke Fusion (this one, to be precise), and it works with the two chargers I've tried it with. Those are the Nokia charger and a PowerBot charger which I think is the same as the colorful circular one they show on that site (just rebranded, I think).

The PowerBot also works great with the Nexus 4 (in its own Ringke case), FWIW.

u/ignorancepower · 1 pointr/Nexus5

I spent $10 on a case and it's probably saved my $250 in potential repairs. That's not a bad ROI.

I picked up this:

If you are worried about the 'sweet spot' then one like mine might be in order:

http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-QE-TM101-K-Black-Wireless-Charger/dp/B0051R4ECM

Not easy to find any more, and only ever sold in Japan originally, but it moves the charging coil to the phone, so you just slap it down and walk away.

As a more expensive alternative to chewing gum: Cyber Clean Putty?

Relevant user review here.

u/suiris · 1 pointr/Nexus5

I left my phone charger-down in a puddle (treadmill cup at the gym) for a solid 15 minutes and I damaged my charging port as well. It wouldn't charge, just heat up. I ended up replacing the little orange daughterboard inside (don't be scared, it only took 10 minutes and a fingernail) with this cheap one:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K7F2NW6/

Probably cheaper than a wireless charger

u/b3hr · 4 pointsr/Nexus5

just switched to this one pretty slick looking

I haven't got it yet but I'm thinking of getting this:

Smart Wallet - High Tensile Expandable Pouch which Sticks to Phones http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008IQ626O/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_uQKWtb1QHG5F9

It should still be able to charge wirelessly if the wallet is emptied.

> preferably <$300

If you are willing to do the repair yourself, this is the <$20 solution.

I bought an identical part when my charging port broke a few years ago.

You might want to get a generic $10 phone repair kit as well, it will make the whole process a lot more easy.

The charging port, the notification LED and the microphone are all part of this flex cable, so you will be replacing all of these in one session.

I used this tear-down guide to change the part (jump to 5:38 if the time stamp doesn't work for you).

You will have to re-use the plastic frame that is glued to the flex cable, but don't worry, you won't have to remove the battery or heat up the phone like they do in the video. The most difficult part for me was to glue the LED back onto the plastic frame, but it worked out in the end.

The phone still works to this day, in fact, I have to use it right now as a spare phone because my Pixel 3a's digitizer broke and I am waiting for it to be repaired.
