I have my media (mostly ripped movies) on a NAS and use PLEX on my 16GB Shield.

I bought a 128GB USB 3.1 drive (here) and made it attached storage.

The Plex web and mobile apps work fine. I don't have PlexPass, but I tried it free for 30 days. I decided not to renew because I personally didn't think the benefits were that great. Some of them include (and I'm sure there are others):

  • Movie trailers for movies you own
  • More than 5 min of playback on the mobile app

The Shield does not need to be on all the time; I let mine sleep when I'm done with it.

If you install Plex, you might also want to look into installing the Kodi app and the (PlexKodiConnect)[https://forums.plex.tv/t/plexkodiconnect-kodi-plex-integration-done-right/137555] Kodi add-on that gives you a lot of cool features.

BTW, I don't play games either, but my son and I have found a few games we like and play pretty often. The graphics are fantastic and NVidia GeForce Now is unreal.

Edit: Fixed wrong name for NVidia's service

Luckily the support for other remotes is great. I use this bluetooth dealy and it works perfectly, even will wake it up from sleep: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BX0YKX4

I'm a big fan of the inteset -Inteset https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00M4I1BAY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_.uK2CbBFT8TJF

Comes preprogrammed for shield and can handle 3 other devices as well (many preprogrammed). Nice, solid, remote feel to it. Pre-programs, learning, macros, universal buttons, it's awesome. (No microphone, no sound jack. Ir, not Bluetooth or rf)

edit: downvote me all you want. I've had one for about 4 years and love the heck out of it.

I posted this same answer for a FireTV user recently:

I'm pretty sure there is no native way to do that. You could get an HDMI audio extractor device that has HDMI passthrough so the signal still gets to the TV, and an analog output from the same device, feeding a bluetooth transmitter that you pair the headphones to. Probably your best bet for this kind of need. Best of luck.
Edit: So, this thing: https://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=101&cp_id=10113&cs_id=1011314&p_id=13348
and this: https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Transmitter-HomeSpot-Headphones-Simultaneously/dp/B00QV77YIC
Bonus: that transmitter can send to two pairs of BT headphones at once.

Ugh, really? I have a couple of old cables, but this brand new one like I mentioned in the OP is totally advertised as working for this, and it apparently doesn't. You think it's the 10' length?

I bought a few of those Monoprice cables in 6ft. They were cheap enough to try - hopefully that's it. Thanks!

Not what you asked but... Amazon FireTV remote is only $15 & works great. :-)

I use that & a mini keyboard for the rare times I have to type.

u/RiftPoint · 1 pointr/ShieldAndroidTV

I ended up getting Fosmon Portable Lightweight Mini Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard Controller, QWERTY keypad with Built-In Touchpad (Black and Orange) and it's working great! Anyone know how to tweak the mouse sensitivity? Otherwise I've solved my problem, thanks for the suggestions!

I was having issues with multiple microSD cards unmounting themselves. Annoying. I went with Samsung 250GB SSD and this $10 adapter: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B011M8YACM/ref=ya_aw_oh_bia_dp?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's more storage than I need but oh well but it just works.
I put a $70 antenna:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CXQO00K/ref=ya_aw_oh_bia_dp?ie=UTF8&psc=1
in my attic and bought an HDHomerun Connect. I get free OTA HD with DVR. I just used an old 1.5TB USB2.0 drive for the recordings. So far so good!

u/thatsmyb1kepunk · 1 pointr/ShieldAndroidTV

Not sure if you solved this yet, but if you go buy a hdmi splitter that supports atmos from Amazon like this it'll work with no problems. I know it's stupid, but I have the sb46514 and without the splitter, I had maybe a 3/10 success rate. After I added the splitter it works perfectly with 0 problems.

I wonder if the single Hauppauge Digital TV Tuner for Xbox one will work. I hope its not as limited in support as it looks.

You have options...

Samsung T5 Portable SSD - 500GB - USB 3.1 External SSD (MU-PA500B/AM), Blue https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073GZBT36/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Z.LSDb0RQZ1K2

Samsung MUF-256AB/AM FIT Plus 256GB - 300MB/s USB 3.1 Flash Drive https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D7Q41PM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_xaMSDb6J3BQ02

Also can get a huge microSD card into a USB adapter.

u/pops2ptO · 1 pointr/ShieldAndroidTV

Amazon is also and option at the same $199 price and this includes free shipping but if you're like me Amazon will charge tax because they have a local warehouse.

u/Asuppa180 · 1 pointr/ShieldAndroidTV

That's why I was looking at it. I'm currently using a 64gb micro sd card. And the speeds are pretty horrendous. Was looking at this one. Samsung 128gb 3.0 drive

The 128gb version seems to have good speeds. Light years ahead of my micro sd right now.

Edit- easier on the eyes

u/Wanamingo77 · 2 pointsr/ShieldAndroidTV

Take a look to this alternative too:
Is the logi k600 for tv an it can be paired up to 3 diferent devices
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C6LXYHL/ref=psdc_12879431_t2_B00ZOPVSKW

It's not backlighted but IMO it's a nice alternative.

u/AmadeusZull · 2 pointsr/ShieldAndroidTV

A little off topic, I've been a ShieldTV owner for the past 3 weeks and I must say you should buy this remote: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M4I1BAY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The ShieldTV is so much better with this remote. With the same remote you can lock volume control to what ever device you use for audio (reciever, soundbar, tv, etc..)

Also I find the response time on switching with IR to be alot better than worrying about charging your controller. (Also my daughter and wife find it much easier to use.)

u/shieldtvfan · 1 pointr/ShieldAndroidTV

Do you really want an SSD hanging off of SHIELD?

Personally, I'd just go for either 16GB with USB3 drive like this one: [Samsung 128GB Metal] (https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-128GB-METAL-MUF-128BA-AM/dp/B017DH3NOW)

Or if you have the cash, wait and buy the 500GB version at the end of the month when its available.

u/KamasutraBlackBelt · 2 pointsr/ShieldAndroidTV

Instead of an SSD with an enclosure why not just get something like the Samsung T5? It's $99 for 500GB

u/Skodd · 1 pointr/ShieldAndroidTV

You have the option to use your external device as a "device storage", some apps will move there or you can just plug it in as use it as an external storage for tv shows/movies.

If you want to use your external device as a device storage, don't plug a usb 2.0 or slow hdd in it. Get a ssd or something like this

u/mjrengaw · 3 pointsr/ShieldAndroidTV

I have 2 Shields and on both I use Kingston 120gb SSD's in Sabrent USB 3.0 ultra slim aluminum enclosures. $30 total on Amazon and they come with everything you need including a short USB cable. Note that once you install the SSD in the enclosure you will need to connect it to a PC and format it prior to connecting to the Shield. They are very small.

Or you could buy the Amazon Fire Remote for $15 ;) https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Remote-Amazon-Fire-Stick/dp/B00LORGAG6/

Works like a charm. No root no hassle.

u/VersatileNinja · 1 pointr/ShieldAndroidTV

I just got this for my PS3 and was surprised it worked with my shield for stripping hdcp:

ViewHD 2 Port 1x2 Powered HDMI... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004F9LVXC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

u/jmmartj · 1 pointr/ShieldAndroidTV

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XB2QYVD/
I added double-sided tape, or you could do 'pro' velcro, and put on backside of TV.

u/Ubelsteiner · 1 pointr/ShieldAndroidTV

I use an hdmi switch ( https://amzn.com/B00QJGAKCW ) but it's not automatic, it comes with a basic remote, so I can't say that I've noticed this.

I'm guessing the CEC on/off setting in the Settings > HDMI screen isn't what you need?

u/Ranma006 · 1 pointr/ShieldAndroidTV

I think around or before Xmas time it came with a remote, I don't see anyone selling it for $200 with both the controller and the remote.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B013HJ13V0/ref=olp_twister_child?ie=UTF8&mv_edition=1&qid=1457326362&sr=8-4

u/ThatWhichSmashs · 2 pointsr/ShieldAndroidTV

Mount one of these to the back of your tv with some 3M double sided tape - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XB2QYVD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Then just rest it in there.

u/nirmalspeed · 1 pointr/ShieldAndroidTV

What I've seen for most TVs is that the optical output doesnt disable the TV volume. If you have Bluetooth headphones, this could be a valid option:
https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Transmitter-HomeSpot-Wireless-Headphones/dp/B00QV77YIC

I just picked the first result for "optical to Bluetooth transmitter" so you should see what alternatives you have.

You would plug this into your TV if it has optical out

I use a Logitech K600 keyboard. It has custom keys for several platforms and keys to switch to three devices. Mine are LG WebOS OLED TV, a Windows 10 PC for Plex and side-loading, and my Shield Pro 2019. Has mouse keys, a touch-pad, and a D-pad. A got to have item.

As someone who went through a whole ton of research and trouble to get full 4:4:4 chroma to get a TV to work as a computer monitor a few years ago when it was all still bleeding edge, I can definitely say there is no such thing specifically as an "HDMI 2.0 cable" in name but there is the official "Premium Certified" cables with the gold logo that are guaranteed to work at HDMI 2.0 speeds and are very cheap from Monoprice and many others... That said, this is very strange as cables usually aren't that bad to only offer 720p, but at LEAST 1080p... Before just returning it do you/friends either have any other 4k device to try connecting to the TV or another TV to try the Shield on? I'd want to troubleshoot like that before saying the Shield is just bad, although it may end up as it is...

Dolby Atmos has been a feature since 2015. Here's Amazon listing for the 2015. The description states *"...*Dolby Atmos surround sound make this a true home theater experience." -Amazon listing

AI upscaling is marketing bullshit. Modern TVs do the same thing, & 2015 &2017 Shields do the same shit. Anyone claiming the Shield 2019 does upscaling better is part of the pussy fanboy club. A club for brainless cock suckers who spend $$$ to satisfy their meaningless shitty lives.

Facts:

  1. "There isn’t any more detail in the upscaled picture than you can see in the native 1080p picture, so whether or not it looks better is entirely subjective." -Rtings
  2. Not all 4k movies are in 4k. ***"***Avengers: Age of Ultron is not real 4k shot at 4k and 2k mastered." -Gamer HQ
  3. Pussy Fanboys will say AI upscaling on the Shield 2019 is better for x, y, & z reasons. Well upscaling is different from device to device. "Not every TV upscales the same though. Some 4k TVs might produce an image that is too soft. This doesn't mean that 4k is inherently worse since most TVs do not have this problem, but it is important to make sure the model you're buying doesn't have any issue with this before going through with the purchase."-Rtings
  4. There is no HDR standard. Dolby vision isn't use by most manufactures---Samsung, LG, Sony, etc---because they used their own standard like HDR 10, UHD, & etc.
  5. Dolby Atoms requires someone to spend $800 for a respectable experience.
  6. So....
    1. Dear Pussy Fanboys,
      1. All of you idiots. You bitch about things you don't have. When you get them, you bitch about having them. You are the 0.5% of the market. The other 99.5% of the market are a different kind of mindless pussies. Those are the mindless idiots Nvidia is trying fuck up the ass with the Shield 2019. As fanboys, you are use to get to the real pussy. You are nothing but trash. -Love Always, Nvidia
