>1) I have a 1 TB USB 2.0 HD that my SP2 won't recognize. I believe it's a Seagate that I bought a few years ago to backup my files. I'm reading online that some externals won't work with the SP2 because there isn't enough power being utilitized for it or something. Ok. The HD lights up, but isn't recognized. My SP2 is plugged in, and my HD doesn't have a power source of its own (it doesn't plug into the wall). Am I SOL? I would hate to replace a perfectly good 1TB HD.

Try using a USB powered HUB. I use the Anker USB 3.0 4 Port hub and it works great for devices that need to be powered.

EDIT: Some devices that may need power from the USB may work with a non-powered hub. The hub I linked to will work, try it plugged in first to install the drivers and then again without powering the hub. It may work.

>2) On that note, how do YOU store your files? I am so far behind with cloud storage it isn't even funny. I know I'm living in the stone age, but I like having the physical HD that I can plug in. The remaining space in my 128 GB SP2 is barely going to cover my music, never mind the movies/photos/other that I have. I don't need them all at the drop of a hat, but they are there. So what's the best fix? An external 3.0? Cloud storage? Some kind of NAS like the WD My Cloud?

I use a combination of Dropbox and SkyDrive OneDrive as well as my own personal deployed "cloud" solution located on my NAS. I also have a HTPC that runs Plex Media Server which gives me access to my media collection on the go. Think of it as a free personal Netflix service.

For local storage however, I also have a 64GB microSD card installed which I use to store downloads, local music and movies, software installers, and other documents.

SanDisk just released a 128GB microSD card if you're after more local storage options.

>3) I like watching video files from my laptop on my HDTV. Best way to do this? I used to just use an HDMI cable and VLC. Do I buy a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI converter? Any loss in quality? If anybody has one that they would recommend, I would appreciate it. Not sure if I only need a simple <$10 one or if those are cheap knockoffs that will break. Or just bypass it all and look into the Chromecast?

Yes, you'll need a miniDP to HDMI converter to use your TV as an external display. There is no loss in quality since it's just a digital to digital conversion. You can use a basic adapter like this or an all-in-one solution like this.

Chromecast IMO is shit as it's limited to screen casting on whats displayed inside of chrome. So unless all you need to cast is web based media, I suggest avoiding chromecast altogether. You'll be better off using a miracast device than wasting your money on chromecast.

EDIT: Using either miniDP or the Miracast solution is entirely up to you. It all depends on how much you want to spend, portability, and accessibility.

The miniDP solution will obviously cost less and will be more portable as it's just a simple cable that you can take around and plug-in to any HDMI receiver. The Miracast solution will be convenient in the fact that it's wireless, allowing you to cast what's on your SP2 to your TV without being tethered, however it's more of a hassle bringing it around if you travel a lot as it's more of a set it and forget it solution. Here's an example of Miracasting.

Read too many issues with 3rd party docks. So went with the Microsoft Dock but got on Amazon for $126 as $199 default price is too steep for my liking. Kengiston Dock is super sweet. But not at $400 sweet for me.

Any 256gb-400gb from SanDisk,Toshiba,Samsung Best MicroSD Cards for Microsoft Surface of 2019.

Been considering this Moko case. But concerned with added bulk and weight. Tho nice has hand strap.

Also look into a 128gb thumb drive so you can create a recovery usb in case a clean install is needed.

And a very, very strong recommend for Microsoft Complete. You have up to 45 days after purchase to acquire it. Gives an additional year of warranty and 2 incidents of accidental breakage. Will cost $149 and accidental breakage replacement fee is $59. I give a strong recommend as my SP6 died on Sun. the 3rd after just 72 days light to medium use without going mobile about with it. Tho replaced with new and unopened under normal warranty. Want that also in my 2nd year of owning. Maximize my high price paid with maximum protection.

You have the exact same logic as I had, I got my mouse, keyboard, and HDMI-Mini DisplayPort hardware for well under $130. I can take a picture if you want to see them for size etc.

I got the Logitech Tablet Keyboard for Windows for $39 (now $43.75). I got this one specifically because of the layout of the Ctrl key (can't stand the Fn key being on the outside). I use it daily and it works great. Only downside for me is you have to use Fn to press the F-keys, but I quickly got used to it. The included case is nice if you want to throw it in a backpack or carry it naked; but once I got my smaller bag, I put the case away and just carry it to keep down weight and size.

I got the Microsoft Sculpt Comfort Mouse for $23. Its a nice compact mouse that is made specifically for Windows 8. I carry it around with the rest of the stuff. I usually use the pen, but when I am using my Surface as a media box, it's really nice to have.

And for good measure, I got the PNY MiniDisplayPort to HDMI for $10. But really, you could probably go with almost any option. I decided to go cheap, but not the cheapest, and this one has been working great for the past few weeks.

u/WorldWideWayne · 1 pointr/Surface

I use a Surface Pro original for programming with Visual Studio 2013 Pro and it's great. It can drive up to 3 external displays with the correct setup. The 128 GB version is fine, I have Office 2013 and VS2013 installed plus a heap of developer utils (git, tortoisegit, beyond compare, etc...).

You can easily get one external monitor with the built-in displaylink and this mini-displaylink to HDMI/DVI/VGA adapter. I also recommend this little USB 3.0 hub + ethernet adapter. Both of those products together with the Surface Pro make for a nice portable workstation (sans external display).

To run 2 external displays, you need to get this Plugable UD-3900 which adds 4 USB 3.0 ports, ethernet, HDMI and DVI. I have one - it works great for office stuff (haven't tried any video games with it except SNES emulators which work great too.)

u/phillibusta · 1 pointr/Surface

Have you looked at a Surface Pro? I travel a lot and use an SP4 specs- i7 16gb ram. I switched from Mac and have found my SP4 to be perfect for commuting or longer trips (2+ weeks).

With the specs above I've had zero issue running full office/multi-tasking.

Pen is awesome for taking notes or marking up a page/screenshot. Has really helped me keep all my notes organized.

The form factor is super light weight and with the Display Port I can easily hook into a projector.

Screen is little small but I travel with this portable monitor as well.

https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-MB169B-1920x1080-Portable-Monitor/dp/B013XFJKGI

The latter has been key for me as my day job is in financial consulting and I often have the need to look at several sets of data/spreadsheets at once.

I like that I can look at the windows full size. Fits in a carry on no problem & is lightweight as well.

Battery is only drawback- I average about 5.5 hours. I bought an extra charger and I keep it in my travel bag.

Overall it's been much easier to travel with and the ability to detach screen is great for meetings- eg over dinner- where I may need to show a client something digitally.

u/Knotest · 1 pointr/Surface

Honestly I prefer this :OMOTON Surface Pro Tempered Glass Screen Protector because it is cheaper and basically the same thing as the one that you showed me. It’s a bit difficult to apply it, but the instructions are simple enough that if you just remove the bubbles and the dust, it will be great and clean.

Also the previous screen protector I used saved me from a big crack on the screen, so I think it’s safe to say that a screen protector will be useful in the long term.

Edit : I’m not sure if amazon works on where you live, so take this link with a grain of salt

u/idetectanerd · 5 pointsr/Surface

check for physical defect, test all your physical part.

check for the screen, make sure it have minimum light bleeding. check for the front camera, the back cam. check for the infrared cam.

check the keyboard and the trackpad if they are okay, the feel of it and how the trackpad scrollability.

check the pen, the 2 buttons on it if they work, check the pen pressure by written on the screen, check the screen by coloring it using the pen on any of the drawing software.

test your bluetooth (pen pairing should do the trick), check your wifi on both 2.4 and 5ghz.

check location if it detect you correctly, check the brightness of the screen (for dead pixel, light bleed and flickering).

test sound loudness.

---------------

with all that, okay now you can test on software

install coretemp to set active monitoring of cpu temperature.

install both anti virus and anti malware tools of your choice (im using both nod32 and malwarebytes), do not skip this, be it you are tech-wise or not, malware and virus can hide behind virtually any "normal" looking site, it can hide behind a normal looking ads or web page. common sense for computer that run on windows tell you to install despite many "tech savvy" folks tell you not to, because windows is a computer system that hackers want to steal and grab your data from and has the largest community in it compared to other OS. protect yourself.

install gfx tools that check your gfx capability, such as benchmark tool. this can tell you if your gfx is working within the good range.

update your generic intel iris driver to beta so you can switch off that irritating auto dimming function.

additional :

you can install intel cpu utility tool to mod the CPU speed, please read online for more info how to do, the benefit some says is that you can optimised the cpu usage and not heating up every time when you run any program. when the cpu heat up, the fan start, this will cost you some battery life to upkeep it.

alternatively, you can modify the hkey register (read online again for how to), to enable the power settings to allow you to configure cpu state. you can set it to 60% max when doing work etc to save power.

-------------------------------------------------

case wise, i would not advise any case but i would advise you to get skins. skin from decalgirl is good and easy to put on. the reason why no case is because any extra housing will cause your device to have dust scratches. dust will find its way into the case and it WILL scratch no matter how well protected you handle your device. it apply to any thing actually from phones to computers.

you do not need screen protector period.

the pen will have stain if you place it near any dark items. take note of that. it is also very prone to get scratch.

you would want to get a wireless mouse for this, check ebay for those built in battery cheap mouse at 2BGP. it work wonderfully.

Get one of these.

It works great on my i7, I get wonderful speeds transferring from SD cards and with my external harddrive connected as well. Don't listen to the one person complaining that it feels cheap. I ordered two, one for me and one for my boyfriend and the build quality is great.

I love it, really.

u/ventdivin · 3 pointsr/Surface

I have those two from Logitech, both have terrific build quality and come with the most amazing aftersale service :

Logitech Ultrathin Touch Mouse T630

Terrific battery life, and it supports windows 8 gestures and fits with the surface color scheme.

------------------------

Logitech Bluetooth Illuminated Keyboard K810.
You can switch seamlessly between your surface and another computer or smartphones, for me, it's a godsend to be able to reply to text from a real keyboard, plus the backlighting is a must for working in the dark.

u/cdbaker3 · 1 pointr/Surface

This post is a bit old now, and idk if you ever picked up the UAG case you mentioned, but I've had luck with this case.

My favorite feature on my SP6 is the kickstand without a doubt, but most cases block the use of the kickstand unfortunately, so I found this case and have used it for about 4 months now.

The only downfall of this case is that the plastic bar at the bottom where the kickstand is located is noticably flimsy. After months of use, however, I don't see this piece ever breaking under regular use nor any reason to hold the Surface from that point anyways as there is a strap built in that works quite well.

Other than that, it's a sturdy case with a nice rubber keyboard tab on the corner to keep your cover in place when not in use, and I have access to all of the ports, the kickstand, and the SD slot behind the kickstand.

Oh yeah, and the Pen holder works a little too well. You'll never lose it, but I recommend pulling the pen out rather than sliding it out as the tight grip will just pull the pen apart revealing the battery compartment.

u/Silverhawk1991 · 1 pointr/Surface

I've had one of these since my SP1 (now have SP2) and it's worked like a charm! I've carried it in my bag everyday, and it works with my friends' macbooks as well quite nicely. Plug this into your surface -> HDMI to VGA cable-> Monitor.

Voila! (results not guaranteed)

This is also handy for presentations in a pinch/when you want to display stuff on a TV that only accepts HDMI and not VGA.

u/SurfaceDockGuy · 2 pointsr/Surface

Pretty decent deal at Staples right now:
http://www.staples.com/Microsoft-Surface-Pro-4-Intel-Core-i5-4GB-RAM-128GB-Solid-State-Drive-12-3-display-Windows-10-Pro/product_1913936

Might have to pickup another one. 4GB of RAM works surprisingly well in Win10.

Add $87 for a type cover on amazon and a pretty great machine for under $700: https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Type-Cover-Surface-Pro/dp/B0163H1HT6

u/surface_enthusiast · 2 pointsr/Surface

I got this screen protector from amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Surface-Pro-2017-Screen-Protector/dp/B013SZIM6W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1502636128&sr=8-1&keywords=omoton+surface+pro

I am extremely satisfied with this screen protector. It's as good as the Zagg protector, but at far more reasonable cost. Probably manufactured in the same factory. It is tempered glass and liquid smooth to the touch. I have no problems at all with touch, the device registers touch and pen input with no issue at all. Applying the protector was also very easy with the included kit (they provide a piece of tape to collect all the dust and lint). You can't even tell that a screen protector is on, it looks and feels like the natural screen, very very good. You only get one chance though, 1 screen protector in this kit, so read the instructions carefully

u/TriflingGnome · 1 pointr/Surface

Definitely agree.

I'm a student so I pretty much am always using OneNote, Acrobat, Word, and Excel all the time. I like using my desktop monitor to review Powerpoints while taking notes with Onenote.

On the go, though it's really hard to do both on just the Surface itself. If the iPad can be large enough to display Powerpoint presentations clearly it would be a huge plus having the touch screen and independent battery.

The other half of the coin is that if I want something more "desktop-like" for a more permanent work environment (office), I would probably want something larger and more integrated with my Surface.

This is what I've had my eye on, such a touch choice

u/Shadow_Crash · 1 pointr/Surface

I use their cases for my phones all the time and love them. For my SP4 I use the 13in Amazon basics laptop sleeve. its very cheep, fits perfect, and gives decent protection while in my bag.

http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-NC1303152-13-3-Inch-Laptop-Sleeve/dp/B00CD8AF48/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1449243534&sr=1-5&keywords=amazon+basics+laptop+sleeve+13

it's not "made for it" but really for $10, it's really been great.

u/DoesntFearZeus · 1 pointr/Surface

If you're looking for a small laptop bag to fit the Surface Pro 4 and it's type cover, charger, pen, etc. This is small, inexpensive and works really well, the Amazon Basic 11.6" bag: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DUGZFA6/ref=twister_B00FB50SBU?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I've got this and it works great. Is lightweight and keeps my stuff together with enough room for a few other things like a mouse, papers, etc.

u/Tim2thaTom · 1 pointr/Surface

Why use cables when you can stream full 1080p wirelessly with Intel WiDi? Do yourself a favor and pick up the NetGear Push2tv on amazon or at Best Buy. Your surface comes with Intel Widi built in, take advantage of it!

u/fyzbo · 1 pointr/Surface

I bought one of these (while it was on sale) - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013XFJKGI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Works great when working remotely.

Edit: I do wish there was a version that matched the size and resolution of the SP4. That would be ideal.

u/qcoomer3 · 2 pointsr/Surface

A case is always nice to protect your new investment... I personally picked up one of these. It even has a loop to store the pen. I absolutely love it.

u/snapacap · 3 pointsr/Surface

i got This.

I got it because people said it was less bulky than the Kensington equivalent. I also looked at the UAG cases, but it seemed like a waste to not use the awesome kickstand built into the Surface Pro.

Also, I have found the pen holder to be super useful. It holds on and never lets go. I don't have much trouble using the ports with it on either.

u/Hunter7263 · 1 pointr/Surface

It fits like a freakin glove. Its quite wonderful if you are just looking at something that protects your surfacebook while in a bag.

https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-13-3-Inch-Laptop-Sleeve-Black/dp/B00CD8AF48

u/ToddAtWSU · 2 pointsr/Surface

This is what I use. It fits the SP4 perfectly and the charger fits well in the front pouch with flash drives and a nice slot for the Surface Pen. I do not like storing the SP4 with Pen attached in this bag as it is very snug with that extra width.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DUGZFA6/ref=twister_B00FB50SBU?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

u/say592 · 2 pointsr/Surface

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B013SZIM6W/

No rhyme or reason, just they had good reviews and are cheap enough. They also offer a small bulk discount with an Amazon Business account, which is always nice. They are responsive and work fine with both the pen and fingers.

u/faz712 · 1 pointr/Surface

I've had that and the Logitech T630, the Microsoft one is definitely more comfortable to use, but the T630 is the one I use the most since I'm always traveling between meetings and going on-site (engineering work). :)

u/Tobimacoss · 1 pointr/Surface

Only something like UAG could protect it from drops.

https://www.amazon.com/MoKo-Microsoft-Protective-Compatible-Keyboard/dp/B077D3LPVD

That should be good enough for her needs.

u/neums08 · 1 pointr/Surface

Yeah. My fiancee was just playing Stick of Truth on our 56" Samsung. You just need a cheap mini displayport to HDMI adapter.

Something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/PNY-A-DM-HD-W01-Mini-DisplayPort-Adapter/dp/B007B6YPAM/

u/devil_yager · 1 pointr/Surface

The comments about how it fits the SP3 on its Amazon page seem to be torn between "perfect fit" and "it wiggles."

How well would you say it fits?

u/ANAL_ANUS_ASSHOLE · 2 pointsr/Surface

Something similar that's made for the Surface 2, but sits flush with my 3 and looks great.

u/17thspartan · 2 pointsr/Surface

Well, it's not half the capacity of the Surface Pro 4 (at 35000 mah, it claims it can charge the SP4 almost 2.2 times), but it does come with a SP4 cable to charge it. For 99 bucks, and the fact that it can charge your SP3/4 with the included cable, and 4 USB devices, it seems like a decent deal to me. I'd read through the reviews to see if the quality is up there, since I don't have any experience with external battery brands.

https://www.amazon.com/Lizone-35000mAh-Portable-External-Microsoft/dp/B015VDLWTI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484669533&sr=8-1&keywords=surface+book+battery

There's also a 79 dollar 24000 mah version as well of that battery.

u/Hothabanero6 · 2 pointsr/Surface

You can get the docking stations cheaper on Amazon.

A docking station solution would be the fewest cables to connect and exposed.

There are two Microsoft docking station options. The bulky SP3 dock
https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Surface-Pro-Docking-Station/dp/B00N3J8NRW

or the smaller Surface Dock released with the SP4/Surface Book which is also compatible with the SP3.
https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Surface-Dock-Compatible-Book/dp/B0163HP38W/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

I would avoid Bluetooth keyboards. The wireless Keyboards & mouse combos work with a single USB dongle which you can plug into your docking station and they are much more reliable.

I don't care for the bulky style dock, but some people like it.
The smaller one works through the Power Connector aka Surface Connect. So you just have a single cable to connect. Note that there are other pins on the connector beside power for all the interfaces.

Connect your monitor, keyboard & mouse (wireless dongle), Ethernet, printer, etc, to the Dock and you're all set.

There are also USB docks from third parties for about $90 but at the $129 price for the Surface Dock they aren't worth it.

u/bencurry · 2 pointsr/Surface

I have one of these: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E7W1UFQ/ref=twister_B00EUJHANM?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 and LOVE it! If you need a SD Card, NIC, or an extra port they have you covered.

I have the Moko case. A near copy of the Kensington case. It’s been on my surface for months. I like it. It adds some bulk, but it still allows me to use the surface stand. I also ended up putting on a couple of vinyl stickers on the stand portion so I get protection while still being able to personalize the surface.

I'm using the [Toshiba DynaDock] (http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Dynadock-Docking-Station-PA3927U1PRP/dp/B006ZGWJU2) with my Surface Pro and it's great. I have one at work and home and each is connected up with two 24" mointors and I've never had any performance issues in the last 3 months of use. I'd much rather buy the Toshiba dock for $140 than the MS dock for $200. If i decidce to buy an Ultrabook later on at least I'll already have a docking station.

I travel a lot, stay in many, many hotels. This is all you need: Push2TV. Connect it via HDMI to the TV, then Miracast your SP3 to it. Works like a charm. That way, you can have the SP3 with you in the hotel bed, but still watch whatever it is on the big screen.

BTW, what's a wp?

Lots of people with Surfaces use this, and you can find some owners in the reviews talking about it. It's cheaper than the OEM Surface dock, and you don't need new monitors (if yours don't already have DP), or extra adapters...

No, it is not worth it if you are always going to be in a place to set it on a table and use a separate keyboard and mouse. It is really meant for you to deploy quickly without carrying a bunch of other stuff, or uses it on your lap, while provide very decent keyboard experience as the keyboard itself has great traveling for the size.

If a decent keyboard experience isn't that important to you, there are knock off wireless keyboard from Moko with the same from factor you can buy too for nearly half the price. https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-MoKo-Ultra-Slim-Bluetooth-12-3-Inch/dp/B017TU3DVQ/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1482857866&sr=8-5&keywords=microsoft+surface+keyboard

keep in mind Moko are not nearly as good as surface cover, but judging from what you said it doesn't sound like you type much. If it being wireless is important to you and you always want a mouse, this might be a decent alternative worth considering.

That information is false.

Like I said, I figured it all out already (above your post)

I've talked to someone with the same model Surface Book 2 as me and they're able to achieve 144hz with a single monitor using a DisplayPort to USB-C cable.

Going off of that, I've based my setup as such:

  1. Monitor

    https://pixiogaming.com/products/new-px277

  2. Cable

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075V27G2R/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  3. Extra Ports

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PC07T02/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This setup will allow me to do 1440p @ 144Hz, Gigabit Ethernet, hookup for my Wireless Gaming Mouse and Mechanical Keyboard, and charging (through the surface port)

I have been using the ProCase (see link below) since I was using SP3s, I even got one for my Surface Go, it's a nice durable, yet soft-enough case. It's not cloth like the one you linked, but it has served me well.

They're disgusting?
I mean the thing is covered in cloth basically.
I'd suggest this, but keep in mind it's Bluetooth only (doesn't have connectors) https://www.amazon.co.uk/MoKo-Wireless-Bluetooth-Keyboard-Rechargeable/dp/B017TU3DVQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1539071334&sr=8-1&keywords=moko+cover+surface or just save and buy the type cover

The mag connector end or the 120v end that plugs into the wall?

If it's the 120V end, the Surface power bricks use a standard IEC 320 / C7 form factor, like this one for $8 from Amazon.

I have one of these for travelling because it's one less cord and most hotels have an outlet on the desk lamp these days.

u/celticchrys · 2 pointsr/Surface

I received this as a gift, and it is, as the name suggests, snug. It isn't really padded, but it protects against scratches when I carry the device in my bag. It just fits the SP3 and type cover with pen attached to the end. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M31BB5W/ref=s9_simh_gw_p147_d24_i4?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=0K043KT06FVGEZH22Q62&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=1970559082&pf_rd_i=desktop

I just got a roocase netbook sleeve for mine -- came in two nights ago. There's an outside pocket to put the AC adapter / stylus / thumb drive, and then the main pocket fits the Pro. It's not a perfect fit, there's a little bit of room, but I wasn't sure that one size down would still fit it.

I was eyeing this model for a while now:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B015VDLWTI/ref=psdcmw_7073960011_t1_B0183UJ2SY

Looks to be pretty much identical to the one you posted, but cheaper. They also sell a smaller capacity for less.

u/OneDudeWolfPack · 1 pointr/Surface

Did the same thing so don't feel bad. I used this model by Cable Matters for my DVI monitors on the dock.

u/jimbonics · 4 pointsr/Surface

Any USB 3.0 dock will do the trick. The downside, is it will not power the Surface, so you'll need to use the power supply as well.

The official dock for the SP2 will work with dual monitors, via displayport daisy chaining, if you have monitors that support it. It would power the surface, but STUPIDLY only has a 100mb ethernet port.

I'm liking the Dell dock, personally. http://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=452-bbpg

Also the Toshiba Dynadock worked well. https://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Dynadock-Docking-Station-PA3927U1PRP/dp/B006ZGWJU2

u/necrochaos · 1 pointr/Surface

Amazon is selling the dock for $160: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Surface-Pro-Docking-Station/dp/B00N3J8NRW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1427141378&sr=8-1&keywords=surface+pro+3+docking+station

My docking station has been priceless.

My dock is hooked to my TV. I use my Surface as an XBMC machine, I read comics on a very large screen (I have a wireless dongle for turning pages) and as a charger that is always plugged in (the one that came with it is always in my bag).

For me, I removed a media center pc, an iPad and an eReader and combined them into one device. The dock was the keystone for the whole transition.

Is the one I have...and $15USD to my door in 48 hours beats $6USD to my door in 1 entire month. Also I wouldn't trust ePacket shipping for something fragile like a glass protector. At least with Amazon returns/exchanges are fast and easy.

I've had UPS/FedEx/USPS ruin TG protectors before....but with them the return/exchange process doesn't take 2 months of mail time.

> I currently have an Asus... Something.

Asus Transformer? That's what I used while I was in school (couple of years ago) and I just recently grabbed a Surface Pro 4.

The official keyboard/type cover will not work in place stand, as the connector (where you hook it up to the Surface itself) isn't stiff like the Asus Transformer keyboard. It'll only stand up with the dedicated stand which can be a bit frustrating. I haven't had much problem with using the built in stand on my lap, though.

You.. you have a Type Cover 2 for a Surface Pro 3? Why don't you get the Type Cover 4? It actually fits the SP3 and the keys are spaced out.

I use this one from Lizone and it includes the cable for Surface Pro machines. It provides over 2 charges but is a little big. Lizone makes a smaller 24,000mAh battery.

AmazonBasics 13.3 inch laptop sleeve. I have a bag I use, since I have a lot to take to and from work, but the sleeve fits my Surface Pro 4 just fine, with enough room for a Logitech wireless USB sticking out of the right side of the surface, and the pen attached to the left side.

I've used these for tablets and other laptops, and have had no issues with them.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CD8AF48

u/paddythegeek · 1 pointr/Surface

Hate to say it, but I think that article you linked has it right. (I saw another thread on this subreddit referencing a similar issue, but couldn't find it again.)

The article I mention noted that any device which uses a dongle relies on radio frequency (RF) communication, not Bluetooth, so the USB version of the port the dongle is plugged into is more or less irrelevant. The issue causing the choppy performance has to do with the USB hub being improperly shielded - it is the EM interference that is causing the chop.

I have experienced the same thing myself with my Anker hub and my Logitech unifying wireless keyboard/mouse combo. I simply had to stop using it with my surface, and instead picked up a USB switch which allows me to use my wired keyboard/mouse on my desktop and Surface as needed. Somewhat inelegant, but effective.

u/buddybd · 3 pointsr/Surface

I use this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L661Z6U/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And I just throw it into my backpack. I also use the sleeve underneath the Surface when I'm writing on it. It's nothing too fancy, cheap and gets the job one.

Edit: One problem is that the cover does not fully close when the Surface is inside it, not a big deal for me as it's usually in the bag when not in use.

u/RobertoCFG · 1 pointr/Surface

I got the Snugg leather sleeve from Amazon. It fits tight but has enough room for the pen to go attached to the surface. Lined, and no zipper or anything that might damage the device. I recommend it a lot. Then again, my SP4 also has a skin cover, just in case.

So replace the cord with this, and don't pay the Apple Industrial Design tax

I hate to jab designs, but with Apple's method, you HAVE TO expect them to provide any and all adapters and cords under the sun for differing regions (or have accessory OEMs jump on the bandwagon), ADDING TO THE WHOLE BOTTOM LINE. Plus the whole design aspect of incorporating differing standards and plugs OUTSIDE of the power AC adapter's electrical standards for differing regions.

In short, not different in application methods either way, the ONLY regard is how "pretty" that outlet space looks... WHICH DOESN'T matter! Who the fuck would look at the plugs at a wall and go "ARTISTIC!" almost all the time and awe at it? And it doesn't solve a fundamental functional problem if two users come with the same paradigm of a power brick to a wall (AND even if you have them both sideways, the weight no doubt would be an issue too OR space with furniture or other things near the outlets).

And with either method, one still would have to be prone to travel with the cord or adapter, meaning a decision and action every time one leaves their residence to pack (that doesn't lessen EASE), which would just end up the user just carrying both, meaning more bulk, rather than a cord that can simply wind around the box and be closer to the box and the wall (unwrapping if needed cord length than be reliant on Apple's end of making sure the cord from the adapter to the device is long enough).

Microsoft AND OTHER OEMs (possibly) got this right in this regard, in at least for the physical connectivity, without burdening all the risk of production and implementation costs, while having the modularity that some desire.

Yes, the box CAN be designed to incorporate hooks and fasteners. My Dell Inspiron 15 of many many years back (a decade!) has included a cord wrap and the box is slightly contoured concave for the cord to nicely wind around in that direction and hell even the Surface power adapter has a small, but adequate snap for the adapter to device cord... BUT for another "prettiness" Industrial Design tradeoff, Microsoft decided to simply go with a matching rectangular box.

If anything, the cord from the adapter to the wall should be longer, and the cord to the device shorter (thus making the USB power port more accessible too rather than being in the middle and on the floor at many times condensing floor cabling). That would be a good tradeoff if one can switch cords to the device.

All you are INDEED paying for with the above to this comment, is the Industrial Design tax.... And those that cannot reason beyond initial emotional appeal will never get this.
