I have been all over the market for the last few months and feel like I have checked out everything at one point or another. I found the sweet spot for the low end is right around $1300. Below that I wasn't happy with anything I saw even knowing that it was low end (and not expecting much). Around $2,000 all day for midrange laptops and there are a ton of really good ones. $2500+ for the higher end stuff. Really anything above $2600 is going to be enthusiast level stuff that has extras just to have extras, stuff 99% of people can do without... (i.e. 32-64g Ram, 1TB_PCIssd, 512NvME_SSD, dual solid state drives, 4k monitors on a laptop :/ SLI 1080s etc.

If you really want to be happy I would ignore the stuff under $1300 and start looking in the $1500-2000 range.

This is a good place to start
This one is pretty solid. Right in the middle of the price range.

My brother just picked this one up. Super slim and light, feels like a MacBook. Games awesome the gtx 1060 is honestly just fine on a laptop, it can max most games now but might not be as future proof as a laptop with the 1070 or 1080.

Good luck!

I generally recommend neither, as they both use quite low-quality displays. Inspiron on the left here: https://imgur.com/Sajajqc.jpg and the GL62M is similar.

I would go for something like the Eluktronics N850HK1 https://www.amazon.com/Eluktronics-N850HK1-Premium-Performance-Laptop/dp/B06X6BB9F7/ (it's a Clevo N850HK1 from a good reseller)

GTX 1050 Ti and a high-color-gamut IPS display.

^(Note that this is the $899 1080p model I'm recommending. Be aware that the $999 4K model uses a PenTile not-true-4K display, and sometimes this link redirects to that if the $899 one goes out of stock.)

I have been using one of these bad boys for about a week now as a replacement at home (i7-4790k / 8gb ddr3 / R9 Fury) and at work (Surface Book i5 6XXX / 8gb ddr4 / GTX 960M) and I gotta say I'm blown away. Here's the video that got me interested, and the Amazon reviews convinced me.

Word to the wise though. Thing isn't an ultrabook. Its a good old 5 lb laptop. That said this thing goes to weekly business meetings with me and puts the spaceship aesthetic of gaming laptops to shame.

Here's one that should be able to run those games (and more) just fine on medium/high settings. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LD4MGR6/ref=twister_B072LZ3S17 though you may want to spring for a 1 TB hard drive to go along with the SSD (the laptop has easy access to the HD slots)

This might be the laptop for your brother!

Asus GTX 1070, can try different HD/SSD configs to change price, but right in your price range
