The 2017 MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-230 would be a very nice pick and it is the thinnest I know apart from the Razer.. It is 0.6 inches thick, has the i7-7700HQ processor, GTX 1060 graphics card , 16GB , a fast 256GB NVMe SSD + 2TB. It also has a very nice keyboard and decent overall build quality.

:-) your welcome I understand the feeling, the first one I want you to take a look at is the MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-230 15.6 Thin and Light Gaming Laptop its 3.96lbs and here are the specs

Processor: Intel Core i7-7700HQ (2.8-3.8GHz)(one of the latest processors around

Graphics Card: NVIDIA's GTX 1060 6G GDDR5(run all your games above in high settings easily)

RAM: 16GB (8GB x2) DDR4 2400MHz

Hard Drive: 256GB SSD (PCIE Gen3x4) + 2TB (SATA) 5400rpm

or you could also take a look at the Razer Blade (GeForce GTX 1060) 14" HD Gaming Laptop which is 4.2lbs a little info too gaming is going to always take a lot of of the battery so when gaming to maximum you would get it 3-4 hours when gaming on the battery but if your just doing school work you are expected to get up to 7-9hours out of them:-)

The Asus rog strix GL703vm doesn't have the best of heat management and that is it's major downfall so I would recommend it to someone who is against using a cooling pad all the time for gaming. The A15 is the first thing that came to my mind after reading the first part of your post as it is currently one of the best laptops on the market in that price range that provides a balance between performance, heat management, display quality, build quality, portability and of course, battery life. I then realized that you listed it but I am not sure what you mean when you say the refresh will be 2500.

This MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-230 would be a good pick but its battery life is not the best.

You could also get this Eluktronics Pro-X P950HR Ultra-portable laptop which would perform better than all the candidates above, thanks to its superior MQ GTX 1070 GRAPHICS CARD but like the Stealth PRO and the Asus you mentioned, it doesn't have a battery life that is as good as the Aero 15.

Out of the three you mentioned I would fo with this one because I believe that the 15.6 is the perfect size for a laptop, especially one that will be used for causal gaming, it has the better screen and still light enough for you to move around with it on a normal day.

I have been all over the market for the last few months and feel like I have checked out everything at one point or another. I found the sweet spot for the low end is right around $1300. Below that I wasn't happy with anything I saw even knowing that it was low end (and not expecting much). Around $2,000 all day for midrange laptops and there are a ton of really good ones. $2500+ for the higher end stuff. Really anything above $2600 is going to be enthusiast level stuff that has extras just to have extras, stuff 99% of people can do without... (i.e. 32-64g Ram, 1TB_PCIssd, 512NvME_SSD, dual solid state drives, 4k monitors on a laptop :/ SLI 1080s etc.

If you really want to be happy I would ignore the stuff under $1300 and start looking in the $1500-2000 range.

This is a good place to start
This one is pretty solid. Right in the middle of the price range.

My brother just picked this one up. Super slim and light, feels like a MacBook. Games awesome the gtx 1060 is honestly just fine on a laptop, it can max most games now but might not be as future proof as a laptop with the 1070 or 1080.

Good luck!

I agree that the Areo is a good choice, also consider the MSI Stelath Pro, the GPU might be overkill for the games you want to play though

$800 cheaper then the most expensive model with 20x the power, I'll add more tomorrow. Here's one for 1k cheaper without the 4k screen.

Since you travel, I'm assuming that you would like a thin laptop that's not 10 pounds.

Option 1: MSI GS63VR (i7-6700HQ, 16gb ram, 120 th ssd, 2 tb hdd , and a 1060) -$1799
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5JUPWO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_9nohzb6DTEF7B

Option 2: razer blade (i7-7700HQ, 16gb ram, 120,240,500,1tb ssd, GTX 1060) a bit more pricey at $2,000 but looks nice in my option.

Personally I'd go with the GS63VR - you would have to pay $500 though

The GS63VR can be fine, but I would be very particular about which one you buy, in particular due to some significant display differences.

  • The GS63VR-252 (Best Buy Kaby Lake model), GS63VR-422, and GS63VR-469 use the "eDP Vivid Color 94%" display rather than the normal "eDP IPS-level" display. This display might be considered not good enough for laptops costing this much. More info about this display in this post of mine: https://www.amazon.com/gp/review/R1Q77JK846CE4O -- Especially if multiple are being purchased, I think it's important not to support companies' practice of using poor displays in expensive laptops and banking on buyers not checking screen details before buying -- that's why this issue exists.
  • The GS63VR-001 display is IPS but with poorer color gamut and brightness. Not as bad as the poor TN but still something to watch out for.
  • The 4K models use PenTile (RG/BW) not-true-4K displays, which require that you deal with the risk that not all your applications will scale correctly, without giving you the full sharpness of 4K in exchange for this. Regarded deceptive marketing on part of MSI, more info in the /r/SuggestALaptop/ sidebar. It's also a lottery between an LG and a less-good Samsung panel, for this display type. If you had true utility for a high resolution, I would have other recommendations with the real deal as far as the resolution goes.

The best prices I've found for models with the good FHD display are these. They have the 6700HQ instead of the 7700HQ, but this is a considerably less impactful/noticeable tradeoff than the display. The 6700HQ is already pretty good; the "Vivid Color" display is not.

  • https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834154652 (refurbished)
  • http://www.frys.com/product/9156908 (no SSD; I'd get this and add it yourself and re-install the OS on it, even if you have to keep track of it on multiple machines)
  • EDIT: Some -034 models here for $1549 if you don't need more than five. https://www.walmart.com/ip/MSI-GS63VR-STEALTH-034-15-6-Notebook-w-Intel-i7-16GB-RAM-256GB-SSD-1TB-HDD/129899757

If none those work, the GS63VR-230 seems to be the main "everything checks out" variant that isn't hard to find.

But really, why not consider a Clevo P950HP6? Similar weight and form factor, good IPS FHD display, better build quality.

  • http://www.hidevolution.com/evoc-p950hp6-custom-built-gaming-laptop-w-nvidia-gtx-1060.html (Offered "4K" option is another not-true-4K, and I'm disappointed in HIDevolution for not at least being a bit more transparent about this, but HID is a solid company to buy from otherwise)

Buying low end laptops is what gives hiccups usually lol i bought a gs60 stealth ghost pro and it was super fast and had no issues. Still pissed that they dropped so much in price lol now they're like 1500 for the latest version i believe. And i like having to monsters lol though recently i had to sell my laptop due to an emergency :-\ oh well i got most of my money back so that was good. I'll get another in the near future. In case you're curious this is the latest version of it

Ironically, buying a gaming laptop is currently more financially wise.

I bought this laptop (or at least the older version of it) two years ago for $1,200, and the only difference between that laptop and the one I linked is the harddrive is 1TB larger and it has four more gigs of RAM. My GTX1060M 6GB pretty much runs any game I want perfectly and without trouble.

At the same time I bought it, GTX 1060s were floating in the $400 range, a whopping third the cost of the entire laptop. The processor another $300, leaving $500 for RAM, HDD, chassis, PSU, SSD, motherboard, what have you.

The downside, as it's always been, is that I can't eventually upgrade my laptop, and will have to bite the bullet and drop another $1200-1400 on a new one when this one dies. But at this rate, and considering the build quality of my Apache... I think I can get another year out of it at least.

The left one is ultrawide, both can move and rotate thanks to this handy bugger. The laptop is an MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro. The desk is an Autonomous Smartdesk

GS63VR Lightning Deal

Best deal I've seen by far. 230 model. NVMe SSD, 120hz panel. Get it.

u/Sadisticblazer · -4 pointsr/hardwareswap

I’ve found 2 of the exact same laptop you have selling for 1k one on Amazon and one on ebay, both used condition, so I think your price isn’t off base by much if all. If i needed a laptop I could see myself offering $800 shipped top dollar but I’m kind of a cheap arse. Just wanted to give some research into it as well.
