About the Omega fatty acids (I am quoting /u/theubercuber here):
> So here's the deal with Omega 3's:
Most people don't get them. You won't die without them. It's better for long term heart health and probably a lot of other stuff, but most people scrape by without. Having a Soylent that lacks Omega 3 isn't a big deal compared to your old diet, it's just an optimization.
But if you DO want to make sure you get them, you have to learn about the different types of Omega 3's.
The first type is the easy type, called ALA. It comes in plants, and it's what your linked recipe has from flaxseed.
The human body doesn't do anything with 99% of consumed ALA.
The second type is the hard type, and you have to get it from animal sources like fish oils. These are the DHA and EPA sub-classes of Omega3's, and these are the ones that are beneficial to get.
Lots of products claim to have omega3 for your health, but only have ALA. If you're going to go through the trouble of looking for Omega3, you have to make sure you're getting a source with the DHA and EPA.
It's hard finding a solid source of omega3 outside of fish oils, so if you want to go that route, a fish oil pill or bottle like the one I liked is going to be the best way to go.

He linked this previously btw and it does seem like a decent product. I don't really agree with the 99% number he puts out, since I couldn't find anything that specific but it is true that your body doesn't convert most of the omega 3 ALA to DHA/EPA... Anyway, I decided on leaving proper omega fatty acids for the second version of my soylent...

I normally add 15-20 grams of the cheapest matcha known to man to every 2000kcal batch of Soylent. The bitter tea takes the edge off the sweetness and adds a little caffeine boost as well. As an added bonus, the green infusion changes the color of my Soylent into a close approximation of Frankenstein's skin (the creature, not the grave-robbing scientist).

I also add approximately 50 grams of pea protein to every batch. This puts me at 130 grams of protein and adds about 170 calories. I also throw in a 2 gram "pinch" of salt because I work out/sweat a lot.

I occasionally mix up a "hotshot" batch with 30 grams of red curry powder, 15 grams of crushed red peppers and two sliced, medium-sized fresh habeneros which I allow to bubble overnight in the fridge. The texture and consistency of this mixture is an acquired taste but I love it!

Having said all that, I don't mind the very occasional batch of v1.5 without any additives at all. I think the taste/texture/mouth feel have improved greatly since 1.3.

I use one of these

Blender Bottle makes good shakers, which is how I prefer to mix my powder most days. The real secret though is those pro stak containers. I picked up the extra 2 pack of larger (250cc) containers as well. The larger ones are the perfect size for a meal of Soylent and the smaller ones are good for snacks.

I generally weigh it all on the scale the night before, snap the containers to the bottle (I usually put a smaller one inside the shaker too) and all I have to grab in the morning is my shaker bottle. I love it!

You do it the same way you would for a reduced calorie diet of other food. Eat nutritionally dense food and in extreme cases take a multivitamin. Soylent limits things by setting a single nutritional density so for a pure Soylent diet this leaves only supplementation so we can enumerate the options.

First, in the case of moderate calorie reductions there is no need to adjust anything. I'd like to put some numbers here but because dieting and nutrition is so poorly understood I couldn't find any good numbers. I'd say that for 1500 Calories and up it shouldn't be a concern.

For uncommonly low calorie diets micronutrient supplementation is a potentially beneficial option. Normal multivitamin pills are meant to be taken alongside food so you could find one and take that. Everything they have in excess should be fine. Multivitamin powders also exist and could make supplementation exceptionally convenient and customizable. The only one I can recommend off the top of my head is Garden of Life Raw Meal. It seems popular with some people around here and should suit as a supplement to a heavily calorie reduced Soylent diet.

I bought a package of measuring scoops (as opposed to measuring cups) a while back and robbed the 1/2 cup scoop to use for my Soylent. 2 scoops per serving.

The powder and scoop live in a pop-top cookie jar. I used the large size of that container and it just fits a week of powder (~21 cups). No need to refrigerate until you add water.

Clean looking container of powder and scoop on the counter look a lot more pleasant than bags which made my GF happy. I'm thinking to get a second one so I can keep the chocolate and regular bags of 100%Food out on the counter instead of choosing one to keep in a bag in the cupboard.

So if it's in a fridge and it doesn't take you more than a few hours to get to work, you do not need a thermos. I use this and it's awesome. My Soylent lasts longer than when in individual blender bottles and it is so easy to clean. Plus with 2 litres, it's easy to measure calories as 1ml is 1 calorie

Maybe try replacing the multivitamin with something like Garden Of Life Raw Meal. It is a natural source of all the same vitamins which means better absorption and nutritional value. http://www.amazon.com/Garden-Life-Raw-Meal-lbs/dp/B0031JK95S

You could also use a more 'basic' fiber source; something like this. It's a little more expensive, but a much smaller grain that could help with consistency. You'll probably only need about 5g to 10g to help with satiation from your base recipe.

The chocolate is good stuff too. I really like the powdered pb since it adds minimal calories, same with the cocoa powder. I just get the Hershey's special dark powder which any supermarket should have in the baking section.

I've been using this lemon-mint flavored oil for a while. Depending on how strong your other flavors are in your recipe you may or may not notice it, in one of my recipes it came through by adding a fresh and minty flavor, I liked the change. Now I don't notice it at all, so either I've become used to it, or my current recipe doesn't allow the flavor to come through.

u/anotherdike · 1 pointr/soylent

I'm late to the party... I use the BlenderBottle ProStak. It's just the right size for mixing up one meal, and doesn't require additional measuring equipment for the milk. Bonus, the little cup on the bottom is just large enough to fit a single scoop of Schmilk if you want to stow a meal for later.

u/kuppajava · 6 pointsr/soylent

What you are describing is 2 bags every 3 days, so 20 bags a month. Start out with a one time purchase of 7 bags (28 meals) and try it out, you may not like it right away, so eat it for a week. If you don't like it, you can easily sell the remaining bags for what you paid for them and just walk away. If you like it and still want to do like you describe, go with the 21 bag subscription which they call 84 meals.

If you do like it, buy this and one of these to make your life a million times easier and to make the Soylent taste better IMO.

Remember that once you mix up a bag of it, you have 3 days to finish it if it is refrigerated. I would also suggest getting a couple of 1 liter blender bottles, but that is not necessary just more convenient.

The 0.1g and 0.01g scale that ketosoy linked are the most popular around here and the diy site. Mainly the first one, it will weigh up to 1000g (1kg) and is accurate to 0.1g. The other one that looks just like it, weighs up to 100g, accurate to 0.01g.
The milligram scale I've seen mentioned before is by the same manufacturer, weighs up to 20g, accurate to 0.001g (1mg): www.amazon.com/dp/B0012TDNAM

u/fernly · 2 pointsr/soylent

This one has a rounded inner bottom which should be easier to clean.

u/ShippingIsMagic · 1 pointr/soylent

It's not discontinued AFAICT, although S&D doesn't seem to do as much to promote it as you'd think.

There are competitors you could consider, though, like Milk Magic, Johnny Moo, or even a straw approach. Heck, there's even caffeinated versions.

u/theubercuber · 3 pointsr/soylent

/u/chrisbair posted recently he now supplements Vitamin K (NOW foods, like 9 cents a day maybe)

Also I and many other users still take omega 3 pills, because NO widely available food-type oils really have great DHA/EPA. I know /u/SparklingLimeade uses Norwegian cod oil added into the mix.

It would make it easier, and carries slightly more DHA/EPA omega3's than my pills, but it's a bit more expensive ($0.30 vs 0.15 per day)

I'm considering trying it next.

u/ZorbaTHut · 3 pointsr/soylent

I think your numbers are off. This scale goes to single milligrams and it costs under $25. I'm not sure I'd trust it down to the individual milligram, but it's definitely a lot more accurate than 100 milligrams.

This is showing up on Amazon right now:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01MTBJCR6

...but not official and outrageously overpriced.

u/bobpaul · 3 pointsr/soylent

Contigo's shaker design is much better. I have no idea why BlenderBottle brand is so popular.

u/TheFilipinoKing · 2 pointsr/soylent

Amazon has a $5.99 sample box that has 3 different flavors, Cacao, Cafe Vanilla and Cafe Coffiest. Cheapest way to try them out without committing to an entire box.

u/kaidomac · 1 pointr/soylent

Dang, bummer! Is dairy an option? There are a lot of varieties of protein powders made from dairy. In addition to dairy, here are some other options to try:

u/fastertoday · 2 pointsr/soylent

I use 2 level teaspoons of japanese Tmatcha per 'meal' of soylent 1.x.

Initially I ordered this cheaper green tea powder from Taiwan but the packaging was crap, it sprayed powder all over the other stuff in the box. The Tmatcha stuff is in a much sturdier bag and they double-bag it with a zip-lock bag too.

> My whole life I've never eaten a single fruit or vegetable

Wow, that's.. sad. No offense intended. Fruits are just delicious to me. Hell, it's better than most candy. Hard to imagine how it would be not liking fruit. Growing up I could eat a truck load of apples, oranges, pears, peaches, strawberries, etc. And I did!
No fruit are tasty to you?

Have you seen this new sample pack on Amazon? $6 for 3. Cacao, Cafe Vanilla (150mg caffeine), Cafe Coffiest (150mg caffeine).
