If you have about $75 to spare you can get a used PS2 and even a new copy of Tales of the Abyss. It's cheaper than buying a 3DS at least. From what I've read there's actually no 3DS extras - just a straight conversion - so unless you want other 3DS games, this is definitely the cheaper option. The PS2 is also an awesome system with tons of RPGs, so I would go this choice - I still play PS2 games (maybe because I own none of the current generation games).
If you have a strong enough PC, you could just buy the game and run PCSX2 which is a PS2 emulator. I won't get into much detail, but you need a powerful PC to run it smoothly - but alas, it is another route you could go.
I've played Symphonia, Abyss, Eternia, and Graces (not the biggest sample size) and out of them all I liked Abyss the best!
Kind of. Not as-is, but there's a pretty cheap thing called Swap Magic that allows it. It's basically a disc the PS2 loads that helps it bypass region locks, the only trick is you need to remove a screw from the disc tray and use what's called a "slide tool" to manually open the disc tray while the swap magic disc is in there. It sounds more complicated than it is, it's pretty easy, and it in no way alters or modifies your PS2 aside from removing that screw.
Here's an amazon link to what I'm talking about, for reference:
https://www.amazon.com/Swap-Magic-Coder-2-Disc-Slide/dp/B001BZCECU
I will note that I don't believe this works on slim PS2s, so you may want to double check the list of compatible model numbers and compare it to your PS2 if you have one.
I actually just got the game last night as well, and I'm liking it a lot. Much nostalgia.
If you want to spend a few bucks, you can get this gamecube-to-PC controller adapter. Personally I'm playing with a 360 controller (until my custom xbone controller comes in Sept) and it works great.
If this is the exact same one I got, which it looks like it is, they are 9 inches tall. They're a pretty good size imo.
Get this, iirc it Tales of Hearts R is compatible with it.
Well if you have amazon prime then you can watch it legally here, as that is the only way to stream it legally. Otherwise I use kissanime (not going to directly link in case that breaks a rule or something) for when I can't stream something legally as it has HD and the ad's aren't annoying.
Try reading The Ultimate History of Video Games. It goes through how the rating boards came about, and what it was like without them.

so i just checked amazon and saw this. It shows a collectors edition that comes with a steel book case for the sound track.
It says its not available yet, but if it becomes available that would be my preferred edition. if not ill probably import the day one edition.

Did a bit more checking. Found that, don't know if it helps. Seems a tad expensive, but there may be cheaper versions or ROMs
Regular edition is also available for pre-order.

I hope I'm typing those links correctly. If I messed it up, a search on amazon.com will bring both up, though they're not the first items listed.
Amazon has it up for preorder but it won't ship until June. It is also not discounted.
Amazon
The standard wired Xbox360 one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004QRKWLA
I just plugged it in and played (after setting the controls to controller in the game settings). No download needed.
I made a quick rundown of all "local" stores I could think of and Amazon, spelbutiken.se and Webhallen all have them. It must only be in America, then.
It's still available and in stock from amazon
Sold out already in UK?
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tales-Vesperia-Berseria-Zestiria-Compilation/dp/B07XLNH689/
the UK version is up for preorder >>here
If you're willing to buy used, you can get it for less.
It appears to be available again on amazon.ca, get it now while you can. I can't seem to find it while searching though, so here's the link: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01LY3WFEJ
Edit: Already sold out.
If you have a PS3, you can snag a shiny new copy of the Chronicles edition for $30 (USD). It's both games in one, and considering the quality of the games, that's a steal.
