Here's what I recommend for a Wolverine fan:

  1. Proteus (Uncanny 125-128) -- their first really dangerous enemy

  2. Dark Phoenix Saga (Uncanny 129-137) -- widely considered the best ever, not my favorite though

  3. Days of Future Past (Uncanny 141-142) -- Kitty travels back in time from a dystopian future

  4. God Loves, Man Kills (graphic novel) -- possibly the best place for a newcomer to start

  5. The Brood Saga (Uncanny 154-158, 161-167) -- a mix of Alien & The Matrix, includes the first meeting of Magneto & Professor X (#161) and the first meeting of the X-men & Rogue

  6. Wolverine (Claremont/Miller limited series 1-4) -- the first Wolverine comics, must-read

  7. From the Ashes (Uncanny 168-176) -- one of Joss Whedon's favorite runs; Wolverine's wedding; Rogue joins the X-Men; Storm gets a mohawk

  8. Havok & Wolverine: Meltdown (limited series 1-4) -- highly recommended, great artwork

  9. Inferno (Uncanny 239-243, ties in with X-Factor etc) -- typical sprawling X-over, the X-Men issues are better than the X-Factor & New Mutants etc.

  10. Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men run 1-24 (the Warren Ellis run after this is also good). The Whedon run also has an amazing motion comic partially available on Netflix.

    Five great single issues:

  • Uncanny 117 - Professor X does mind battle

  • Uncanny 150 - the first great Magneto story

  • Uncanny 153 - the funniest issue, Kitty's Fairy Tale

  • Uncanny 205 - Wolverine vs Lady Deathstrike

  • Uncanny 268 - Wolverine hanging out with Captain America in Madripoor in the '40s

Stuff that didn't make the cut:

  • Uncanny 94-124 -- highlights include the Phoenix Saga (101-108, good background for Dark Phoenix) and a great Professor X story in issue 117. Otherwise you won't miss too much if you skip to Proteus.

  • Uncanny 177-228 -- there's some good stuff here but for me it's not as good as the previous stuff. Highlights include Lifedeath (tpb), and issue #205 is a must-read for Wolverine fans.

  • Uncanny 229-239 -- I think this run is worth checking out. It includes 3 story arcs leading into Inferno: The Reavers (and the X-Men's move to Australia), the return of the Brood, and Genosha. This would be a good time to check out the Wolverine unlimited series.

  • There's some good stuff after this, esp Psylocke becoming a ninja (256-258) and Wolverine & Cap America in #268, but it's in a bit of a decline (although Jim Lee's art is incredible).

Grant Morrison's New X-Men run gets recommended a lot, but personally I think it's overrated. The art undergoes jarring shifts as artists change, some of the art is truly bad, and it's a damn shame how Morrison assassinated Magneto's character. And there's basically just 4 X-Men in it, 3 of them being members of the original Stan Lee team.

I posted a while back asking what to read after all this stuff and got some great replies: http://redd.it/22vx0e

Uncanny X-men Omnibus collects a lot more material compared to the Masterworks Uncanny X-men Vol 1, there are some other differences as well but that is the most significant.

Omnibus collects Giant Sized X-men 1, and Issues 94-131 and X-Men Annual 3. The omnibus also has additional material not usually included in other collections, such as including the original letters pages from the comics, concept artwork from the artists, ect. The Omnibus is also hardcover and uses larger and higher quality paper.

Masterworks (according to the link you provided) only has issue 101-110 (edit 2: I believe their description is incorrect as the same issues are collected in vol 2. This probably actually collects Giant Size X-men 1 and issues 94-100). The pages are of a slightly smaller size and not quite as high quality paper (though still good quality)

Edit: Forgot to mention, neither of these are for the original x-men run but are from the early era of the relaunch of the x-men starting in 1975 (widely considered to be one of the most iconic era of x-men).

For original run you would need either [The X-Men Masterworks] (https://www.amazon.com/Marvel-Masterworks-X-Men-New-Printing/dp/0785191380/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1525812633&sr=1-1&keywords=x-men+masterworks), of which there are 6 volumes.

Or the [Epic collections] (https://www.amazon.com/X-Men-Epic-Collection-Children-Atom/dp/0785189041/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1525812651&sr=1-3&keywords=x-men+epic+collection),not sure if these collect all of the original run

There are omnibus collections of those as well but they are out of print and crazy expensive.

There are a few different places you can start:

If you HAVE to start from the beginning just read the first 24 issues, you can then skip over to Claremont's era

My recommendation would be to either start with Chris Claremont's 1st era (aka 70's) & 2nd era (aka 80's) on Uncanny X-Men or from 2001-ish (aka modern X-Men) time period onwards onwards. Either way just skip the 90s for now, you can alway go back to that later.

  • Claremont's first era (70s): You can buy them HERE and HERE

  • Claremont's second era (80's): You can buy them HERE and HERE

If you want to start with Modern X-Men...

  • ...you can start with Grant Morrison's run on New X-Men which you can buy HERE

  • Joss Whedon's run on Astonishing X-Men start's right where Morrison's New X-Men leaves off and you can buy that HERE and HERE

From there you can get caught up pretty easily if you follow this list in order:

  • House of M (buy here)
  • Messiah Complex (buy here)
  • Second Coming(buy here)
  • Schism (buy here)
  • Avengers Vs X-Men (buy here)

From there I would move on to the current All-New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men titles:

  • Read all of All-New X-Men (pre Battle of the Atom Crossover) Buy here: VOL 1 & VOL 2 / VOL 3
  • Read all of Uncanny X-Men (pre Battle of the Atom Crossover) Buy Here: VOL 1 / VOL 2
  • Read Battle of the atom crossover (buy here)
  • Catch up with All-New X-Men VOL 4 / TRIAL OF JEAN GREY / VOL 5
  • Catch up with Uncanny X-Men VOL 3 / VOL 4

Great, now you're all caught up!

PS, the great thing about X-Men is there is a ton of content to explore aside from the main storyline!

  • X-Statix (buy here)
  • Uncanny X-Force (buy here)
  • X-Factor (starts with these two: HERE and HERE)
  • Cable & Deadpool (buy here)
  • Wolverine & The X-Men (buy here)
  • Ultimate X-Men (start HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE)

    ...and much more!

    Happy reading! :)

It's a tricky question, actually. Which X-Force tie-ins have you read? There are a lot of incarnations of X-Force over the years (and a lot of tie ins). For an overview, I would go see Crushing Krisis Collecting X-Force

Personally, I would start with the Kyle & Yost helmed 3rd series (2008). See X-Force Vol 1 This is a modern, edgy, and hard hitting X-Force. It is directly responsible for developing the X-Force into what it has become.

If, however, You want to start a little more recently Uncanny X-Force is awesome. It spins directly out of the X-Force mentioned above. So I would still start above.

Finally the new Uncanny X-Force is also great. It is a bit of a departure from the Remender/Yost series. So if you want to hit the ground running with the current series, I would start here.

not really familiar with season one (just did a quick google search), have you tried X-men first class? it seems to fit the same catergory

Hmm, this is kind of a toughie with such limited info to go on. There's been any number of short story anthologies featuring the X-Men. By "a book" can I assume you mean a trade paperback? Could it be this one? It collects various shorts from the second volume of X-Men Unlimited. There's also Manifest Destiny, as well as two volumes of Vignettes, though those are older stories that wouldn't be as overtly dark as you describe. Do any of these sound familiar?

Here we go.

  1. Neither? She wasn't possessed but I wouldn't go so far as to say she was being a psycho bitch either. It's VERY hypocritical for her to be judging Cyke for what he did. Let's do a score count here. Scarlet Witch - pushed too far, recently lost grip on reality, highly emotional at the time of killing VS Cyclops - pushed too far, possessed by an extremely powerful celestial being without the ability to control it, highly emotional at the time of killing. Death Count: Scarlet Witch - tens of thousands, possibly a million. Also she had just killed Hawkeye, an original Avenger and a longtime friend, also her robot husband(Avengers can be weird too) VS Cyclops - One. His father figure/mentor(who had manipulated his mind, lied to him, done shitty shit to him throughout his life and was now trying to kill him) Aaaaaand the one allowed to judge the other? Ding ding ding! It's NOT Scarlet Bitch! She should not be judging anybody! "oh but I made new mutants come around after we stopped cyclops!" No bitch. You wouldn't have had to do that if you hadn't killed a shitload of them and forced the Phoenix to come here to try and fix it all.

  2. Off camera I suppose. Cyke and the Phoenix Five get new digs when they host the phoenix. In AvX Consequences Cyke is seen rockin his regular uniform. Then in Uncanny bam! X-suit. I think it's the writers way of showing you that things are gonna be different. Idk how his x-face works or shoots lasers but I love it. The cover of the comic where he goes to see Cable is one of the greatest covers of all time imo. The art and the simple phrase "Daddy's Home" just say so much. Pure awesome.

  3. Magik is a total bitch. I believe more bitchiness is being revealed in the current Uncanny X-Men comics but I'm not caught up so idk. Her and Colossus fight in AvX(not much is shown though). They fight again in Uncanny X-Men #20 I'll give you the dialogue straight up. It's after their fight with each other/Spider-Man and everything else that happened in AvX. It's the first time we see the two since they were unconscious. Colossus is chillin in the middle of Siberia on a farm minding his own business, keeping to himself and Magik shows up. Colossus: Stay away. Magik: But, brother! Our business has not yet concluded. Colossus "puts the helmet on"(it just kinda shows up like it does) and he's grown and has spikes coming out of his body and says something in Cyttorak I would assume. He charges at her and she says: Not here. Come with me. She transports them to Limbo. M: Much better. C: Finally someone I can murder without regret. Finally a greasy smear of an offering. M: Let's end this. He charges again, she puts her sword to the back of his head, strikes, removes it, lightning art is goin all over the place and Colossus is on the ground, looking like regular Colossus, no spikes, no helmet, normal. C: It's gone. The power. It's... M: Do you remember Cyttorak's words? A Hell Lord is master in their domain. My soulsword shatters enchantements. When in my realm, it's enough to slice the destruction lord's bonds. C: You could have freed me whenever you wished. M: Yes, I could. But then, you would have learned nothing. teleports them back to Siberia I did all this out of love. You were not like me, so you could never understand. Now you do. Now you know exactly who I am. Do not give yourself away so easily for someone who simply does not deserve it. Do not give yourself away for a snowflake who melted long ago. C: If we ever meet again, I'll kill you. M: There you go. Lesson learned. She leaves. Some quick backstory on this, Magik lost her soul, she risked a bunch of X-men's lives to get her soul back, they didn't lose anybody but they didn't like that she did that. Technically she wasn't her when she did that but it was uncool. Also she brought Colossus to Cyttorak's domain to watch her take the power of the Juggernaut, knowing that he would never allow his little sister to bear such a burden so he would take it. It tore at him for quite some time and she did all that, with the power to free him the second he took upon that power to teach him a lesson. That lesson? She's a bitch. After their little fight there she goes to Storm and tells Storm where he's hiding so that Storm can go and turn him in(he's still wanted for his "crimes" as a phoenix member). Some key things to be taken from what happens after that and before the Marvel Now! stuff is Colossus tells Storm to kill Magik on sight. Storm asks Magneto if Magik is dangerous. He answers with: "That she is. As am I." It's not for no reason, but she is a bitch(ish...she literally did go through hell)

4)Namor joining is Avengers/X-Men: Utopia. Magneto joining is X-Men:Nation X. Anything else that happens on Utopia can be purchased in the comics I've listed/pictured in an above comment. Anything in between Utopia and Schism, takes place on Utopia.

  4. I agree kinda. I don't like the routes they took during the Schism but I still like Beast, he's like the old family pet you don't want to see die. Quite frankly I'm tired of seeing Wolverine EVERY WHERE. You said 15 comics, it's not far from the truth. Ones where he's the main character that are ongoing now are Wolverine, Wolverine:MAX, Savage Wolverine, Wolverine and the X-Men. Ones where he makes frequent appearances A+X, X-Men Legacy, All New X-Men, Avengers, Avengers Assemble, Uncanny X-Force, Thunderbolts. Any Spider-Man title. Any X-title. Any Avengers title. He's there. That's taken from http://comicbookdb.com/character_chron.php?ID=2 as to the comics he's been in, in the past few months. They even joke about this is Avengers/X-Men: Utopia. "Seriously, how many teams can that guy be on?"

I think I covered it all, let me know if you got more q's
