The Dell T30 is regularly on sale for $300. It comes with a 5th gen entry Xeon and usually 8GB of RAM. Throw in a cheap SSD and BAM!

Here it is for $370.

I am also considering this question. Should I get the Dell T30 and its Xeon E3-1225? - which is just barely, but not actually, better than the Core i7 4770 as suggested by u/jnew1213 with the Optiplex 9020 (I'm sure this isn't the cheapest spot),

Or should I get the Dell r710 (or 720) and its (price point considered) Beast Mode possibilities. VM and RAID and all the RAM you would want! Just, you have to mount it somewhere. Also - maybe the noise.

Or possibly the r620 - even cheaper and with more network possibilities for VM(?) I have more questions about this, but it's certainly an option.

I have a chunk of change and I am considering this same question. Will be following the conversations herein.

EDIT: Lots of fingers in different possible pies.

I have a open-box Dell T30 Desktop (Amazon Link:

Intel Xeon E3-1225 v5 3.3GHz 4 Core 4 Thread| 1x8GB ECC UDIMM RAM (can also install non-ECC RAM if you prefer) | 1TB HDD | 256GB SSD

4x 2.5" drive slots (2 occupied), no OS (Win 10 Pro unactivated currently installed), 2x DP, 1x HDMI, 1x VGA. Has integrated graphics so no need for dedicated GPU

Exact same specs as Amazon link except I added a 2.5" 256GB Micron SSD. Could do $350 with the SSD or $330 without it local. Pretty much new, no signs of usage like dust or anything like that.

Dell.ca has it for $699.00.

Next lowest price is Amazon.ca at $775.

I know it seems like overkill to you right now, but check out getting a workstation/server like the Dell T30. They go on sale pretty frequently if you keep an eye out. I just picked one up for $329 straight from Dell not long ago. Newegg also has plenty of refurbished workstations in your price range. It's not going to cost you much more and you'll have a much more powerful machine to use as you learn and expand.

Put unRAID, FreeNAS, XPEnology, Debian, etc. on there and have a stable legit server/NAS.

I went through the same transgression you appear to be going through. Simple USB External -> Multi-bay external -> small dedicated NAS -> and now a workstation/server. Each time I realized it wasn't enough for what I wanted to do as I learned more and more. I'm already eyeing second-hand enterprise rack servers for my next project. But that won't be for a while.
