Get yourself a microphone and an audio recorder and record the sound separately. Camera microphones are horrible.

Forget using the camcorder. Use the GoPro and the S5 to record. Record your footage in 1080p on both devices.

Also get a tripod and the adaptors you'll need to put the gopro and / or phone on it.

Option 1: Use your phone.

Overall the sound quality is pretty good and I found it to be useable for a lot of videos I made. The biggest issue I had with it is the fact that there is no indicator of battery life so that was a little annoying.

The VideoMicro is better than using the on-camera mic, but the end result will really depend on how far you are from the mic. The closer you are to the mic, the better/fuller the sound will be. The farther you are from the mic, the more echo you'll hear.

If you'll be sitting more than 3ft from the camera, you could get a longer audio cable to bring the mic closer to you using a stand/clip positioned just out of frame.

A lavalier mic is also a very good option for these types of videos. The mic is clipped to your shirt, so it can be positioned for the best pickup and moves with you, keeping the audio consistent as you move around. Here are a few different lavalier options:

The Audio-Technica ATR-3350IS lavalier microphone might be a good option. It would plug right into the iphone (as long as you have a headphone jack, or an adapter) and could record directly to whatever app you have. I've used it for some recordings in the car and it's done a good job. You'll still hear some road noise, but you could lessen it in post-production.

If you have some time, i highly suggest buying a cheap lavalier. The one I got for one of my interviews was this $20 audio-technica lav that was miles better than using in camera audio.

Its affordable, comes with a battery, and provides surprisingly decent audio! Even after your robotics video, you'd have a very usable mic on standby, and that would make you more confident in taking a wider variety of projects!

The iPhone trick is decent if you don't have any other option, but its not very professional, both in terms of appearance on-set, and in terms of audio quality. It isn't horrible though, so it's not a bad option too.

HOWEVER, that approach prevents independent editing of your voices.... to do that you need 2 separate channels or devices.... so you could record via the lav mic into your phone, export the audio to your editing hardware (probably your computer)

Are you using Mac or PC?I know there is free audio editing software on both platforms.... I'm not sure what it is for the macfor a PC it is Audacity

It looks looks like it's using a TRRS 3.5mm plug, which the S7 uses for microphone input. TS/TRS/TRRS/TRRRS
I've used this lavalier setup with my S7, using the included adapter which is TRRS, and it worked well. So, I'd assume that your mic should work as well.
Though, I'm not too sure about the durability of a bunch of soldered resistors and a mic at a live show. At least protect it with some heat shrink tubing.

Theoretically yes, but that means your zoom would need to be placed on the person. The cord is only about 3'-4' long. Just make sure to use phantom power (try both +24 and +48 to see what comes out clearer).

If your renting the whole package might as well use it as its intended. Always looks more professional that way.

P.s. unless your getting a killer deal, I can't imagine the rental cost of that whole kit would be cheaper than buying a freestanding lav to add to your own kit?

Focus on clean capture first, then effects afterwards. H1 could work, but if staying on the cheaper side, I’d grab an audio technica lav and a 3.5mm to xlr adapter. then plug into the H1 and record that way. Might be able to send a lav straight into the computer thru premier too. Not ideal, but it works in a pinch. As for EQ’ing & all that, YouTube has absolutely tons of videos on basics.

Well another option to get a microphone that won't make your friends ears bleed is just to buy a standalone lavalier microphone like this, which I have myself. You could use these in combination with earbuds which would, to me at least, be the most comfortable option.

Unfortunately not exactly yet. You know now that the hardware is better, it seems much more feasible that audio could be grabbed at the same time. There is one other screen recorder that does record audio, but it's purely based on recording whatever it can hear through the mic, which if you're trying to record what you are receiving, is very awful compared to having a direct line.

The primary reason why audio is not recorded is because back on older devices this required turning off hardware accelerated video encoding, and then you would have to have a terribly low video framerate, with many skipped frames, and audio recording would still be iffy. Even today I do not know if the iPhone 6/Plus or iPad Air 2 could really handle it that well at high video framerates (30 FPS or more).

If you want to record audio, my suggestion is to buy a TRRS adapter and record the audio to another device, like your computer:

You can then export the video and sync/mux the audio back in with an editor/encoder. This way you will have a relatively high quality recording both in audio and video (still not the best possible, but close).

In case you're looking to get a new mic, I just got this, and I heartily recommend it. I also have something like this that I still use when I want to use a headset instead of an earpiece.

If you have the option, I'd also use some sort of audio editing software to get the most out of your sound, then import that audio file into your video editor. I run my mic audio through Garageband to minimize background noise and boost the volume level, then sync it back to the video. Maybe you don't need a new mic, but just some TLC on the levels.

No, I use the Audio-Technica ATR3350iS It says it's for smartphones, but only because it comes with the adapter. It's a normal Lav otherwise. The only thing I hate about it is there is no battery indicator, so ALWAYS have spare batteries with you when shooting.

What are you using the microphone for? the internal stuff on that mic cannot be worth $20, if it comes with $20 worth of housing, cable and a shockmount..... and you’ll still need a boom stand or full mic stand to support if close enough to your source to use it. if you’re just using your voice for speaking, a livelier mic like this (a good one) will solve all your needs and NOT require an extra stand, you can wrap it up in your laptop bag or pocket :
