If anyone is looking for a good dashcam, this one is the one I have. I've been using it about 2 months and no complaints so far. Video quality is good, and also records audio.

If anyone's looking for a good dash cam, these are cheap and work well.

I got this one just as a starter one basically. I heard good reviews for the price, and figured it would be a nice one to get me going. You have to make sure you get it from a real dealer because there are a lot fakes out there.

Dude get a dash cam. You won't regret it.

Edit: here's a pretty popular low-cost one

I have a G1W and it's been good. Make sure you are getting one from a reputable buyer, though. Also don't forget the microSD card!

I got mine from Black Box.

I work with a few police officers and detectives at my job - they're mostly at lunch right now so I'll ask them for more advice when they get back. Off the top of my head, I could tell you the following:

  • I know you said that you drove in front of them so they could see your face, so this doesn't really apply to you - but I'll say it anyway for anyone else who's reading. Determining someone's race at night in a car is very difficult! Unless you pass directly in front of their headlights without your headlights pointing at them, they can't determine your race.

  • Even if you suspect that it's because of your race, don't say that to them. Follow their instructions, be polite, and don't give them any hassle. Giving them trouble is just going to make them give YOU more trouble. In the majority of these situations, it's best to cooperate and file a complaint later.

  • Get a dashcam! Seriously, you'll spend 50 bucks on the thing and it will serve as irrefutable evidence if you do get harassed. That, and it's wonderful for insurance claims. I did LOTS of research to find the best one. I ended up getting this guy and absolutely love it. Also, remember that it is 100% legal to film interactions with police officers in almost every jurisdiction. Make sure it's legal in yours. If he asks you to turn it off tell him, "for my own record keeping and personal safety, I would prefer not to. It's entirely within my rights for me to record this interaction."

  • It's easy to mistake race prejudice with age prejudice. I'm biracial and live in a very white part of town (I have my whole life). When I was a teenager I'd get harassed a lot more. I'd get followed by shopkeepers, cops would give me a harder time, everything. When I got older (I'm 27 now) this happened less and less. I started dressing differently also - switching from jeans and a tshirt to button-up shirts, ties, and non-denim pants. That has made a massive difference. They always say that you should dress for the job you want to have, I say you should dress for the respect you want to command.

  • Do not refuse a breathalyzer. In most states that's as good as failing the breathalyzer test (which is an automatic DUI).

  • In the event that you do legitimately get harassed (again, I'm not saying this wasn't legitimate), ask for the officer's name and badge number and ask if he can call his commanding officer to the scene. He may refuse to call his commanding officer - which is perfectly legal.

  • Know your rights and know a good lawyer. There are lawyers who specialize in this sort of thing and as long as your claim is good (and you have evidence), they will be happy to take up your case.

  • If you're being attacked by an officer (rodney king style), shout out for help and witnesses. Chances are that SOMEONE will whip out a camera phone and hit record. Make sure it's obvious that you're not resisting and you are unarmed. Do not fight back!

Edit: Just talked to a few of my cop buddies and they gave me these additional points:

  • Most cops aren't being discriminant and are just trying to do their job. Some of them are assholes. If you DO have a problem with a police officer, come down to the station after the incident (directly after) and file a complaint. They'll ask you to give a statement, have you sign it, and then start an internal investigation. Do not lie in your statement - lying to the police is a crime and they will prosecute you if you create a false report.

  • They also suggested that you take a ride-along with the local PD. Nearly every PD nationally allows citizens to request ride-alongs (barring that they aren't felons or anything). Just write a letter to the chief and explain that you want to take a ride-along to get a first hand perspective on what the police do on a regular basis. They may call you to verify a few things, but you'll almost definitely get the opportunity. My friends suggest doing this because it'd give you an in-person view of what police do when they pull someone over, what they look for, how they approach people and deal with citizens. I've done it twice, myself! Smaller PD's will even let you use their shooting range (under supervision) if you express interest. Not only that, but the whole experience will put you on a friendlier basis with your local police - less "us vs them"

This is one of the ones I see recommended quite often, I bought mine almost two years ago (June 2014) and attached it behind my mirror, ran the wire up around the edge of the headliner, down through the A-pillar trim, under the dash, and to the cigarette lighter via the edge of the glove compartment. I also bought an add-a-fuse that I was planning on adding a hardwired cigarette lighter outlet for it but I never seem to get around to it.

Still works like new, gets great footage

I got this one. It works pretty well, it turns on and off automatically which is the only feature I really care about. If you want fancy options like GPS, accelerometer, etc. there are better cameras out there. The picture could be a little better too. Basically you can read licence plates and road signs while stopped, but one you get moving the vibrations make them impossible to read. Again, fancier cameras with image stabilization are out there, but they cost a lot more.

I mounted it with a ram mount. the mount cost as much as the camera, but it works really well. I would highly recommend this mount. I can not think of a single improvement that could be made to it.

Thankfully I've never had to save any of the footage, but in terms of bang-for-your-buck it's pretty good at $49.

I've been running a G1W dashcam for a couple of months now. I really like it and you can't beat the price. I didn't really need any of the expensive options like GPS, WIFI, etc. I just wanted a reliable camera that would record everything.

I purchased mine off of Amazon

The video quality is pretty decent. So good that I stepped it down from 1080 to 720. The 720 is perfectly clear for my needs.

Here's an example. 1080P on a bright day.

The G1W has worked perfectly for me. It's pretty reasonably priced too. It's often for sale at $49. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J2OVN74/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1
