It's made by an OEM that's bad about OS updates and it has a HiSilicon SoC, so it will never get major OS updates.

Make certain you get the VNS-L23 version, that's the only one with US LTE bands.

The Moto G4 is from a better OEM and the Blu Life X2 at least has a Qualcomm SoC, so it might get unofficial OS updates.

Same problems with mine. I just bought a Blu Life One X2. Blu is not great about updates but it comes with 6.0 and rumors of an update. I don't care about having the most up-to-date phone. It does what I want and need. $180 on Amazon with a case and screen protector. Has 4 Gb RAM/ 64 Gb and takes a 64 Gb SD card. Speaker is decent, volume is much better than the N5. Screen is 1080p and bright. Battery is great compared and it has Quick Charge 3.0. Cons: It's a bit clunky and fatter compared to the nice sharp lines of the N5 and it is heavier. I like it. The N5 is in a holder on permanent charger as my bathroom media center as long as I can keep the switch working.

I'm going to get one of these for Christmas.

I think with phones that is really difficult to say for whatever your usages are as there are so many little considerations and differences. I actually am using a cheap BLU while my Moto is in Motorola purgatory and it is surprisingly good. I would recommend the BLU Life One X2 (Sub 200! 64gb ROM 4GBRam, 1080p, quick charge, good camera) or the Nexus 5x.

(They sell a cheaper version of the phone, but it only has 2gb ram and 16gb storage. I'd definitely go for the slightly more expensive one.)

I'd say check out the phones by BLU, they're pretty well priced for the stuff they pack. I recently ordered a BLU phone, the Life One X2 to replace (a coincident) my S4 (the port is trashed, MB heats up, batt is shot, etc).

I mean, for just under $200 US it's not a bad phone, I linked you the 64GB/4GB RAM model. I mean I think it'll be a good jump from an S4 to a pretty new phone (less than a year old I believe). Hope this helped you make a choice or point you in a clearer path for a choice.
