This is the monitor I used. I just took it out of the case and glued it into my BMO enclosure.

And this is the battery I used. Again I took the insides out of the battery enclosure so it would fit inside BMO.

I had to bypass the voltage regulator on the monitor so that it would run on the 5V from the battery instead of the 12V it was manufactured to use.

A lot of Android devices can output HDMI with a simple adapter. However that sounds overkill for what you want and HDMI field monitors aren't cheap. If you just need low resolution you could go with a Raspberry Pi and use the composite video output to a cheap display.

Yeah, so I used the parts from OP's post but the enclosure is designed around these external parts. I have my model on my desktop, which I've yet to unpack (all still in boxes) since I just moved to another State, so if you are interested, I'll post it for you tomorrow or the day after. Writing LVDS drivers from scratch is a nightmare. Unless you buy a display that already has drivers available for your device, it's not even worth attempting.

What kind of resolution are you looking for with this handheld device? Composite video is crap for quality, but it's cheap (plenty of <$20 options), and with only 2 wires to hook up, is dead simple. Maybe consider the CHIP? It's made with handheld applications in mind - they even sell a blackberry-style display/keypad/enclosure thing for it.

As others have said, it's not ideal, but it'll work if that's all you have. Especially if you're going for a portable solution. Otherwise, I'd recommend something like this off Amazon if you're looking to save size.

Another solution would be SSH. Install openssh on your pi (Debian: sudo apt-get install openssh, Arch: pacman -S openssh), then putty on your Windows machine (OSX / Linux can both use OpenSSH as well) and ssh into your pi.
