  • Check here - it looks like for animation/rendering, you'll get better absolute performance, and performance/dollar, from a Ryzen CPU (the 3000 series just released, and, unlike past generations, the highest core count CPU also has the highest single core boost, so it's pretty insane, as showcased by the placement of the 3900x on the chart in that link).

  • I assume animation workloads require streaming large files, so you'll do better with a faster NVMe SSD, as opposed to the SATA SSDs you chose. Here are two choices that should work well---with the Sabrent, you could get just one 2TB drive; but if you go with two 1TB drives make sure your motherboard has 2 full speed M2 slots. If you do end up going with something like the Ryzen 3900x CPU, then you can even get an X570 motherboard which supports PCIe4, allowing you to get even faster NVMe SSDs (though they're twice as expensive, so check benchmarks for your particular applications to see if it's worth it over spending the money on a GPU/CPU upgrade).

For a $4 difference, I'd get the NVMe. Fewer cables, less hassle, better performance.

Try looking into Ryzen 5 3600. It's 100 dollars cheaper and should outperform/equal 8700 in almost every scenario, especially if you want to look into productivity. Userbenchmark comparison. You might not even need an additional cpu cooler with this.

For ssd, you can upgrade to nvme for no additional cost: 512 GB inland premium. Or double the storage for less than $50 with the saved from the Ryzen 5: 1 tb for $105.

Huge upgrades for ~$235

I bought a 2019 Razer Blade 15" Advanced last month with a 256GB SSD along with a 1TB drive to replace it with. I initially installed Windows 10 on the new drive using a USB installer, but struggled to get drivers because there's no ethernet port and I didn't have a USB->RJ45 so I used Clonezilla to copy the 256GB's contents to the 1TB. This worked excellently until today (about a week and a half later), when it wouldn't boot and gave error 0xc0000034.


Rebooting with a USB Windows 10 install/repair drive returns unsuccessful messages for any attempted fixes ("you need to choose a Windows installation to do [x]"), and ones that require a reboot go back to the same screen. I tried following some suggestions for fixing it with command prompts but was unsuccessful there as well.


Where the weirdness really kicks off for me is that if I plug in the old drive, which I reformatted over a week ago, in an external USB-C enclosure it shows up as bootable.


Even weirder is that it will successfully boot into Windows - on the new drive. It runs completely normally unless I unplug the external drive, a couple seconds after which it will freeze. If I plug it back in it will unfreeze instantly, but 20-30 seconds after being disconnected and left out it will BSOD.


The BIOS and EC versions on Razer's website are 1.05 and 1.03 respectively; mine are both listed as 1.00.


I tried updating them and both installers gave me this message that they're "only for Blade and compatible systems."


Here's how both drives (with bonus Windows thumb drive) show up in the partition manager; disk 2 is the old one/external.


The external's main partition is completely empty.


Other miscellaneous attempted fix: One of the 3-star reviews on the new hard drive's Amazon page mentions an inability to be used as a boot drive, and a response says that it can be if CSM is disabled but I don't see a toggle in the BIOS currently.


Is my only option to nuke both drives and reinstall Windows from scratch, and if so will that continue to make the Razer installers not consider it a Razer laptop?

Go with the 3800x build, it has more threads for whatever applications you'll be using. The 9700k is limited to 8c/8t and won't be as good in productivity tasks.

One recommendation I would make to either build is to purchase a m.2 NVMe drive for about the same as the Samsung 860.

i would not spend $200 on a 1TB pcie 4 SSD, and look for a $100ish pcie 3 SSD. ( Inland premium 1TB $110)

use the savings for a better ram kit. if you are not scared to overclock. Ballistix Sport LT 2x16GB (make sure 'AES' is in the model number) for about $150 atm.

if you do not want to overclock and just want to set XMP you should be able to find some 3600mhz C16 ram kits for a similar price.

Only thing I can see is GPU or a 1440p 144hz monitor. The only GPU that really makes sense to upgrade to from a 1070ti is the 2080 Super IMO. Unfortunately both GPU/Monitor are pretty $$ upgrades.

I see, what are you paying for it? It’s a good drive for sure, but it is held back by SATA III. There is a 1tb version of the inland drive. It isn’t limited by SATA III whilst being a touch cheaper. I do believe it is also significantly faster thanks to the NVME protocol. Unless you’re paying a discount for the 860 there isn’t really a reason not to go with the inland instead

I'd recommend this Inland Premium M.2 NVMe SSD if you were building yourself or if it's available from the list. Really great SSD and nearly as fast as the Samsung for quite a bit cheaper.

You could also build something yourself, it's not as hard as it seems. All pieces only have a specific slot they fit into. :)

You could spend $24 more and get two 1 TB m.2 NVMe sticks from Inland Premium which will be way faster, if you really need 2 terrabytes of fast SSD storage.

This is an option for people who need tons of SSD storage and don't have m.2 slots, but otherwise I'm not sure this is really worth it.

I agree with what is said here. 3600 MHz RAM is the sweet spot for Ryzen 3000 processors.

I would also recommend getting a M2 NVMe SSD instead of the 2.5". They're a very similar price (and slightly faster) but the real perk is not having to deal with any cables.
