You want to watch for mist formed pepper sprays because there can be blowback and affect the victim. The mace gun can fire up to 25 ft, which is another huge plus. You don't want her to have to get within grabbing distance to spray, because the assailant can easily lunge forward and hit the spray out of her hand. The intimidation factor of a gun is also a deterrent.

I disagree with everyone who recommended a semi-auto pistol as your personal protection weapon.
Everybody's first handgun should be a revolver. The revolver's design simplicity, ergonomics and reliability make them ideal first guns and "carry pieces."
Smith and Wesson & Colt make fine revolvers, but they fetch a premium price.
I would recommend doing a little bit of research to find a reputable, indoor range in your area that stocks rental revolvers in .38 and .357 calibers so that you can get a feel for how revolvers of this type shoot.
Personally, I think that .22 Magnum is an unsung hero of a revolver caliber. If you can find a range that stocks one those too, even better.
Have you taken a firearms safety course yet? If so, you're ahead of the curve. If not, make it priority number one.
Once you get a feel for how revolvers or "wheel guns" run, then start visiting some sporting goods stores to see what they have in your price range.
