I do the same, I live in a big city so I see tons of bicycles on my commute. I usually give this bad boy a ring and we all have a smile, then they let me use the bike lane to pass everyone.

The rear light was fairly easy. I just attached a standard flashing red “joggers light” to the back of my helmet with some Velcro as well. Although mine is slightly different, it’s similar to this/

I had to experiment a bit with the front light. I wanted something that didn’t stick out too far, and I wasn’t looking for a “light my path headlamp” so much as just something to get people’s attention. What I ultimately settled on was the flat led light from this...

You just pop the light out of the beanie, and Velcro it to your helmet (although I used a couple packets of Sugru to better orient the light in a more downward direction.)

There was one night though where I needed to OW it along a very dark path for a couple miles, and this headlamp and the OW lights were not by themselves sufficient to light the path to my comfort. So I’ve since added another Velcro strip to the side of my helmet where I can attach a small but powerful flashlight whenever needed that I carry in my backpack (a Fenix PD-35 if you’re curious).

The other thing I recently started doing is using a “finger bell” to signal people along the sidewalk when I’m approaching from behind them. I use it sparingly as I don’t want to be the jerk dinging his bell saying “get out of my way,” but it is helpful to give someone a heads up you’re about to pass them, or warn people around a blind corner, or even just get peoples heads out of their phones long enough to notice you so they don’t step in front of you as you’re about to pass.

I’ve only come close to running into someone twice while on my OW, but either easily could’ve resulted in injuries to us both, so I like having and using the finger bell. Here’s the one I went with:

My solution for this: A bell on the handlebars. Yelling at people startles them. A "ding-ding" gets their attention and then as you pass them once they've moved, you tell them, "Thank you."

Remember, the bike paths are also for pedestrians and you're supposed to yield to them. You're also supposed to keep it at 10 MPH or under when approaching and passing people walking.
