Honestly, putting a bell on my bike has been one of the best things I've ever done. The incredibell is compact, affordable, doesn't take up much space on my handlebars and it's loud.
Now I felt dorky putting this thing on a bike I paid over $1,000 for, but let me tell you why I love it.
You know those annoying path hogging pedestrians? The ones who never seem to hear even the most assertive "ON YOUR LEFT!" And jump out of their skin when you pass? I give this thing a ding started some ways back and a couple more as I approach. Even someone with head phones on can here it. It doesn't sound like a little kid's bell. It's a very nice, clear sound and it's loud.
It's nice when approaching another pack of cyclists to give a warning that someone is getting ready to be cruising by. It's nice to give a quick ding as you pass others going your way to say hello. It's nice to alert others of your presence. It's just a win-win situation.
After having it for a year, I can say I don't find anything goofy about it and have had many other cyclists buy them because of mine.
Oh, bells definitely work if you have a good one. The Incredibell is pretty decent for the price, but the most effective bell I've come across is the Spurcycle bell. It gets a lot of looks when you ring it, which is exactly what you need it to do.

It's a must-have. You can hear it through headphones and traffic noise, you no longer have to scream at people to get out of your way, but pleasantly ping in their direction. I use one similar to this to great effect.
