I believe it's a hardware issue with the port itself and the way the dac detects connectivity and conductivity with the individual pins. My limited testing has made me think it's an issue with the 3rd and 4th pin that can be solved by using a 4 pin connector whenever possible. I use a 3 inch wire that came with a pair of headphones I have to "convert" the 3 pins of my headphones to 4.
