Mr. Tuffy (or similar) tube liners work great. I have a set of Meetlocks thorn resistant tubes I picked up on amazon for fairly cheap, they work well but they're VERY heavy and negatively affect ride quality. They're like riding on wood. I'd try liners before trying thicker tubes.
