Civ isn't a massive performance hog, so that price range should be reasonable. If you can bump up your price by $100 you get into the range for gtx 1050Ti graphics cards, which are going to be solid cards that last you a long time. You probably don't need a full 8GB of ram for Civ, it might help in the late game but it's realistically out of your budget anyway.

If this is your computer, there's a few differences that impact performance. Here's a breakdown using UserBenchmark that highlights them visually. While you do have an i7 processor, the one on your model (a 7th gen processor) has 2 fewer cores and 4 fewer threads than mine (an 8th gen processor). Mine also has a higher boost clock when under significant load. The ram speed is also slower, yours being clocked at 2400mhz while mine are at 2666mhz. I’m just about to upgrade mine also. Currently running FSX with Orbx scenery, Active Sky, Rex, A2a, etc. On a Dell laptop with a 17 in display. With an i5 2.53 ghz - 2gb Nvidia GTM55 card - and 16gb Ram.

I typically get 30fps in Orbx rural areas dropping down to 20 in cityscapes. I would describe my graphics and scenery setting as around 75 percent, with traffic set low on land, and in the air

So I know I will have no real problems with any laptop above those specs. As that is a 5yr old laptop and as long as I don’t get greedy with settings it’s perfectly fine. I will probably go for one with a 17in display, as I love that about my current laptop.

And if you're seriously saying a laptop would need to be over $1200 to be able to do that you're high af. I can find one right this second with a current gen gpu and processor that could run runescape on high easily for less than that. I'll even link it to you.

8gb is definitely possible. I've played it on my laptop with 8gb. More RAM doesn't make your computer faster, just allows it to multitask more efficiently.

I have a Lenovo Y700 but it's a few years old now (6700hq processor and 960m graphics card) and there were some strange things I had to work out when I first got it so I wouldn't recommend it now. While I do run kcd with a mix of settings from low to very high at around 40fps, I would definitely recommend something newer. My machine was about $1000 when I got it so you can probably find something for around the same money that's a bit better by today's standards. Just search around. Alienware is overpriced, Lenovo is cheap but they do strange software things. If I had to shop for a better one I would look at msi machines. They seem pretty respectable and their cheaper models are around $1000.

Nice work, how was installing manjaro on a hybrid laptop?? I have one similar but only pop os! worked kinda good switched back to not using Windows 10, only using him for a bit of gaming.

The acer on is probably the best bang for the buck because they’re know to stay really cool and it’s got the 1060.

I tied to keep with the i7 for better processing and encoding and you won’t have to worry about an encoder overload

I know this is a PC thread, but I guess my question is more about the parts and their worth than anything...

Two days ago I ordered (and today just received) this Acer Nitro 5 laptop. Was browsing today and saw this MSI GL62M laptop for $40 more.

Bottom line, Acer has i5-7300HQ processor, 16GB RAM and 256GB SSD (+1TB HDD) and the MSI has i7-7700HQ processor, 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD (+1TB HDD).

Is it worth returning + $40 for the better processor, knowing that I can upgrade memory and SSD later (if needed)?

There are several good options there for your father... This Acer Aspire E 15, would do a very good job for him in completing basic tasks as well as playing the game mentioned. It has a nice 7th gen i7 processor, fast SSD and even a dedicated graphics card. It is not very heavy, has a backlit keyboard and excellent battery life. He could also get this MSI GL62M 7REX-1896US which is more powerful in just about all ways but looks more like a gamer and it has a poorer battery life.
