Looks like the TRIPLE15 code is for new customers. Amazon also has it for $139.46 if you don't want to use Jet.com. I don't have experience with them so not sure how reliable they are.

I found golds are really good, I got them on sale for $70 though. Normally they are $99.
Platinums are on $120 on amazon. They are better built and sleeker IMO. I'd compare the two online and see if the price hike is worth it to you.

-I had the gold headset before this one and it felt very cheaply constructed comparatively (only lasted 6 months before the folding part snapped and shattered). It's def a fine option at the current Amazon sale ($69.99), but buyer beware. The plat has a pliable metal band that can take a beating... I may have accidentally stepped on it once... or was it twice? Regardless, the headset brushed it off like a champ.
-I've had the plat for 2+ years now with heavy use and it shows no sign of breaking/cracking, audio quality loss, or charge depletion issues.
-Like any good wireless headset, the usb dongle works perfectly fine (and has WAY better range) when plugged into a computer. I play rocket league on PS4 all the time with my friends who are on PC, and I use this headset for discord on my laptop.
-If you've got the initial line Ps4Pro and it runs like a jet engine (despite cleaning and replacing thermal paste...), these have decent noise reduction to combat the small exploding star in your room.
-There is an app on playstation that you load EQ sound profiles on that are designed by game devs for their respective games... but idk if my app is busted or if they never update it, but the plat app only has like 3 options for me and I can't get it to update... not really a selling feature here, BUT you can set your own EQ and save it to one of the two presets on the plat headset and load it on the fly, which is pretty cool.
-3D audio, dual mic voice capture, and the standard bass boost switch are welcome features here compared to the gold. 3D audio SHINES on this thing, but it only works with PS4.
-In regards to price point, this is a great list compared to the trend (CamelCamelCamel Link) and the cheapest a new one has ever been made available besides a crazy brief sale in april.
Sony Platinum headset that came out Dec 16/Jan 17, it also supports 3D sound which currently is support by Uncharted 4, Horizon and MLB the Show. IMO they're the best price to performance ratio for me. I had the Sony Gold headset before those, they're a step down from the Platinum in terms of quality and sound performance.

Yesir. The PS Gold can only achieve 3D when connected via the 3.5mm jack. As for the reasons, the 3D audio is processed by the PSVR breakout box. If you don't mind spending the extra cash you might as well get the new platinum headphones, which is the follow up to the gold headphones Link

I think some 2D games will be implementing it if there aren't some already, the Amazon page includes 3D audio as a feature of the headset. I'm not positive how it would work either, but it's listed.

Maybe just grab this for him, based on how much he prefers Sony's own accessories to other brands. It would be hard to gift a pre-order, but you can print out the receipt/order# and pop it in a Christmas card? Sony fudged up by pushing back the release 2 weeks after Christmas, but I guess it means they've worked out all the kinks.
EDIT: Keep in mind that if your bf has the new Slim model PS4, he won't be able to fully utilize headsets that require an optical input. The old model and Pro both have the optical input, but not the Slim. Also, whoever is just downvoting headsets they don't like in here...please kill yourself.
