Hi! If you are worried about your kid dropping the switch, I would highly recommend the JETech Protective case. Should only set you back about 15 dollars. Keep in mind that you won't be able to dock your switch with this case, but its really sturdy and comes in handy if you guys are on the go (It has grips on the back, which negates the awkward hand positioning).

I would also recommend a glass screen protector, and for a controller I would invest the Nintendo Pro Controller which is wireless (70 dollars retail, but it goes on sale quite a ton. I would check out r/nintendoswitchdeals), or if you want to go cheaper a wired pro controller (20-30 bucks)

Just want to note that Mario Kart can work with just the two joycons you have, so if you really don't want to drop a lot of money you are already covered!

I understand this is /r/zelda but for those who might miss it, there will always be a Mario theme released: https://smile.amazon.com/PowerA-Nintendo-Switch-Wired-Controller-Plus/dp/B075DNGDWM

I have this one. I got it like... over a year ago? It's never failed on me or anything. It:

  • is inexpensive
  • lacks wireless functionality
  • lacks rumble
  • lacks motion controls (Mario Party and BotW use motion controls)
  • is easily compatible with Windows (nice with emulators)
  • comes with a long ass USB cable

I'm very happy with my purchase. I got it for twenty bucks. I use it with Snes9x all the time. I have a steam controller lying around gathering dust because this controller feels more natural to me. The lacking features only bother me occasionally but the controller is inexpensive so I think on the whole it's a good buy.
u/that_90s_guy · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Not OP, but I'm pretty confident he/she is talking about either the Hori wired switch pro controller, or the PowerA wired switch pro controller, since both of them cost about $25 USD, and they are both officially licensed by Nintendo.

However, I strongly recommend you reconsider if you'll be using them for Smash. I've used both of them at work, and honestly speaking...the quality is solid. Sure, they both feel light and cheap, but honestly speaking the finish is pretty darn good for the price. The only major quality con I see is they both have a fair share of hardware issues, with controllers that randomly stop working after some time, thus their low rating on Amazon despite high sales numbers.

The thing that will probably get you though is how bad the controls are for smash, and that if you're going for quality, you just wont beat the Pro Controller. I actually kinda went in depth about this in my other response to you as well above here, but basically, I'm pretty confident that had I bought these cheaper alternatives for Smash, and then tried the Pro Controller, I'd have regretted my decision horribly...

Don't buy Wired Controller PLUS for Nintendo Switch if you want to keep all features.

I'd recommend you to avoid any of these below...

They don't have HD rumble, amillbo reader, and motion control. Nintendo Switch Pro Controller (wireless Pro, not wired Plus) have all features. Buy Pro, not Plus.

Pro is wireless, Plus is wired.

Depends what you need. This one from 8bitdo is pretty popular, it's a little more expensive at $50 and shaped like a snes controller, but its got all the buttons, as well as gyro aiming and is wireless. If you're fine with a wired one that doesn't have gyro aiming, this one from PowerA might be best, its normally around $30. But I personally would save up some money and buy an official pro controller. It's currently down to $60 on Amazon and has all the features you could need. And you don't have to worry about something happening and it not working.

UPDATE so far the power a Nintendo switch wired controller works like a champ. Retropie detected and allowed me for to configure and seems to work great. Here’s the amazon link. Hey so I recently sold my PS4, with the controller, which is what I was using to play games on my PC, and am interested in getting a new controller to use on my PC and switch if possible. What I have in mind is the PowerA nintendo switch controller, but I'm not sure if it would work also for PC. I have seen some people saying it does and some people saying it doesn't. I was basically wondering for those of you that have this controller, will it work for both my switch and my PC, and will I be able to play basic steam games? (E.g. Dark Souls, MGSV, and Cuphead)

Hi! I want to get a Switch but have 2 questions:

  1. Neon Joy-Cons or Gray Joy-Cons?

  2. I already have Breath of the Wild on the Wii U and the main reason I am getting Switch is for Super Mario Odyssey, so which pro controller should I get:

    https://www.amazon.com/Wired-Controller-Plus-Nintendo-Switch-Breath/dp/B075DQ13SR?th=1&psc=1

    https://www.amazon.com/Wired-Controller-Plus-Nintendo-Switch-Breath/dp/B075DNGDWM?th=1&psc=1

I like the Breath of the Wild one better, but that's not the main game I am getting for the Switch... so which one? I personally can't decide in these kinds of things. I have no skills related to "how to tell which one's better?" Please help me decide. This is an expensive decision, I want to buy it first time without regrets.

I bought the PowerA wired controller and it's been working great for me. Much cheaper than an actual pro controller, plus the fact that it's wired AND has no turbo function (which is harder to find than I expected) means that it should never run into any rules issues at big tournaments.

EDIT: It seems like there are a decent amount of people having issues with this controller judging from reviews; anecdotally I've had mine for approx 8 months and haven't had any though. Cheap enough that if it does get issues eventually I won't feel too bad though!

u/TheFitCajun · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

> I haven't tested, so no guarantee. Try it and see.

I'm super late to post the results, but no, it doesn't work with the PowerA controllers, sadly. Any chance you could add support for it? It's these: https://www.amazon.com/PowerA-Wired-Controller-Plus-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B075DNGDWM?th=1

This was one of my options. It’s wired but if I get wired I can afford two. Wireless would only afford me one.

u/makelovenotposters · 1 pointr/Paladins

I would appreciate it if more were repeating what you're saying! How was I foolish enough to believe that Nintendo's home made controllers were the only ones available with their crazy $80-90+ price point. I know what I'm going to get myself for Christmas. Well maybe. These cheap controllers have no rumble, nfc, wireless, but more importantly to me...gyro.

And sorry if this is advertising/rule-breaking but for anyone else looking, here's what I found after the above reply: https://www.amazon.ca/Nintendo-Switch-Wired-Controller-Plus/dp/B075DNGDWM

What type of condition is it in? Not listed, but I also have a Mario style PowerA controller (not a pro controller... Wired with no motion controls, rumble, amiibo scanner or that fun stuff but an extra controller). Does it include the original box?

This is an official product, not an offbrand, and it's supposed to be wired.

Are you on the right sub?

u/skoffs · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Hmm, wait, I just checked on the Nintendo store.
There wasn't a listing for a wired Pro controller, but it did have one for the Wired Controller Plus.
Was that what you meant?

u/Viney1 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I would recommend getting a charging dock for the Joy Con if you'll have more than the base 2 pairs. The only way to charge the Joy Con is to have it connected to the system and in the dock (or the expensive charging grip). With a charging dock like (https://www.gamestop.com/nintendo-switch/accessories/nintendo-switch-joy-con-charging-dock/141872) here, for example, you can pop up to 4 joy con in there easily and charge them at any time.

Also, if they won't be playing the Switch docked and you want extra protection, there is a heavy duty rubberized hard case cover to protect it from drops. https://www.amazon.com/Mumba-Nintendo-Switch-Heavy-Rubberized-release/dp/B071ZRM6C1 <- like the one shown here.

Another thing to mention is that if you're looking for traditional controllers, you could buy 3rd party ones now for much cheaper than the pro controller (although the Pro controller is king). First option could be a cable for $16 that allows you to use your other console controllers with the Switch. https://www.amazon.com/FastSnail-Controller-Converter-Controllers-Compatible/dp/B073ZFPJLQ

The other options are about $30 and luckily come in many styles, but the only caveat is that they are wired, like the one I'll mention next.
https://www.amazon.com/Wired-Controller-Plus-Super-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B075DNGDWM

Aside from that info, only other thing I'd say is that the physical game cartridges are small, about same size as a 3DS cartridge, so you'll have to plan that out accordingly. ;)

Good luck, Santa!

u/o_opc · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch
  1. There may be a few updates, I wouldn't worry about it though. Nintendo is super good with keeping them at the minimum

  2. You may get some mixed answers for this one. I'd say yes because the switch screen is plastic. While plastic screens cannot crack, they scratch a lot easier.

  3. The switch has lots of great multiplayer games. If your son plans to have friends play games with them, I'd get one of these wired controllers so he has an extra controller
u/MarcoSolo23 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitchDeals

If this is the controller you're talking about, it's a lot cheaper because it doesn't have NFC or motion controls.

u/CoryBoehm · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

A wired control such as this one would give you a third player, cost less and have potential other uses, ie player 2 in Fire Emblem Warriors needs a full second controller.

u/HappyBroom · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Looking to get a pro controller. As a Canadian I can't exactly justify the $89.99 CAD price tag. Are these just as good?

https://www.amazon.ca/Nintendo-Switch-Wired-Controller-Plus/dp/B075DNGDWM

I have seen some people shitting on them here and around the internet. Are the criticisms justified or is it just "I need muh official Nintendo products" I don't want to go with the official one if I don't have to.

u/bino991 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

So here's the thing about the switch, it's stupidly durable. Here's a video showcasing how strong the console itself actually is:

https://youtu.be/kqMgv9hHmrY

That being said, the closest I could find to a case similar to what you described would be this:

MoKo Nintendo Switch Case, Segment Design Protective Set Crystal Hard Back Clear Cover, Shock-Absorption and Anti-Scratch, for Nintendo Switch Console (2017) - Crystal Clear https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B078V15VY4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ArTKAbS1SVHHA

All other cases I've seen are kidnapped stow and go and don't let you play the console without taking them out of the case.

As for controllers you have a few options. The main one is buying another set of joy cons (which are the controllers that CE with your switch). This way you'll technically have 4 controllers because each individual joy con can be used as one. You can also buy the Nintendo official pro controller which is similar to the one made for the Xbox 360/Xbox one and doesn't split into two like the joycon. To buy a set of joycon or a pro controller is about the same price. Nintendo does have some officially licensed pro controllers that have Zelda and Mario designs on them but they are not wireless which may or may not be a deal breaker for you (they are cheaper though).
